I am a 59 year old African American man. This song came out in 1976 when I was 13. My siblings took awhile to warm up to it. But being a musician and going on to be a future DJ I just knew this song was a monster in its own unique way. I was right. This song won R&B song of the year in 1976 I believe at the American Music Awards. Considering the outstanding songs that were out at that time during that Disco Heavy year that itself says what an accomplishment that was.

Well, "Lowdown" won the Grammy Award for Best R&B song for 1976 and the album "Silk Degrees" (which included 3 more top hits including "Lido Shuffle" and "It's Over", not to mention a beautiful song called "We're All Alone" that became a million-selling hit for Rita Cooledge) was nominated for Album of The Year in 1976 and subsequently went 5-times platinum! I believe these beautiful ladies have been Boz's backup vocalists for years! They sound more beautiful than ever! I was born in 1964 so grew up in the greatest Era for music that brought people of all stripes together and unified us in many ways. Our Country really enjoyed and needed that after race riots and the Vietnam War. I'm so sad to see us separating again 😢 But maybe if we can keep this alive like you two, young, sweet people are doing, we can feel love again! Thank you so much! You two are so sweet 💕💗

William "Boz" Scaggs started out as the second guitarist and backing vocalist in the Steve Miller Band, but he left after "Sailor", their second album. (You can hear him on Steve's first hit "Living in the USA" and he had a few songs of his own on those albums, too.) He's done fine on his own, though. EVERYONE will recommend "The Lido Shuffle". Boz started out in the Steve Miller Band (1st 2 albums), before ending-up in Muscle Shoals (not, actually, in Muscle Shoals.) @ F.A.M.E. Records & meeting a kid that Rick Hall (the owner of FAME ) met sleeping in the parking lot. Kid was named: Duane Allman (before forming The Allman Brothers Band with his brother Gregg, etc.)👍👍. -Boz ended-up covering Fenton Robinson's "Somebody Loan Me A Dime" (as: "Loan Me A Dime"). This is Boz in the '70s (when he was, already established as a solo artist.) The "secret" to this tour (and this album and a couple around it) is that: numerous future members of Toto were members of Boz's touring band (along with Les McCann, who is the original guitar soloist on this song.). Jeff Porcaro on drums, I believe Mike Porcaro on keys, David Hungate on bass. ...These guys were all studio regulars and played on tons&tons of albums -both together & separately!-). Anyhow: Jeff played on a number of cuts on this album and the guys I mentioned, went out as the touring outfit for Boz Scaggs' Silk Degrees. 🤘🤘 [The "huge secret" is that: WHILE they were recording: TOTO IV (That's the album w/"Rosanna" & "Africa" on it), as their night job (yep. They did this after a full day of working on a gig for someone else!), d'you know what their "day job" was??: Recording tracks for michael jackson's Thriller (for Quincy Jones & m.j.)! Yup! No yolk! 😋😛😂👍👍]

This is one of the greatest songs ever. As good as this sounds you need to hear the studio version with Jeff Porcaro on the drums, David Hungate on bass and David Paich on synth/organ. Those guys would go on to form the band Toto. Superb musicians. And damn nobody sounds like Boz such a unique cadence.
@tiger2old

This is what is soooo amazing about this industry, as you alluded to Jeff and the David’s evolved and Toto was born and as they grew they became a breeding ground for other new groups, as an example, Timothy B. Schmidt joined the Eagles providing his guitar and vocal chops. But I digress, Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees album was one of the most influential of its time…what a magnificent album.

Boz Skaggs used to play with The Steve Miller Band back in the late 60’s and into the 70’s. A very unique voice indeed. This was from the late 70's, so this sound was a fusion of a little R&B with a little funk and a smidgen of disco. Back then genres often blended into each other because people just loved everything that sounded good and wanted to dance to it in the clubs or at parties. Back then you could hear every type of music played on the top 40 or FM radio and no one cared too much about the genre, just if the music sounded good and they could vibe to it. If you liked this and Hall & Oates, you should listen to Bobby Caldwell, "What You Won't Do For Love" and Canadian singer Gino Vannelli, "I Just Wanna Stop".

Boz Skaggs was lead vocalist in a band that included horns, woodwinds and keyboards on top of the usual Rock & Roll sound that was guitars, percussion and vocal. I believe it is fair to say they were really a Rhythm & Blues group. There were a few others that followed that same formula and several had good success on the Popular Music Radio stations. Groups including Chicago, Gerry Rafferty and E.L.O.. I'm sure there were other examples as well.
