The way I see it, we got two years of utterly atrocious writing and now we're getting *competent* writing so it seems a lot better than it really is.

Yeah, the structure and occasional tension is nice as opposed to, in the previous series, where everything floated along all the time and had no logic. Here, some scenes are logical and others aren't. So, yeah. Technically an improvement but a far cry from good. You've pretty much just pinned it. I had a LOT of little problems with this episode, and was mainly really sad to see that Flux was starting to show signs of Chibnall's previous work. Pretty polarizing episode, I suspect. There was a lot of dumb stuff I couldn't let slide, unfortunately.

Thank you for this video, son. Another very enjoyable review. I thought this episode was insultingly stupid, and such a waste of an opportunity. I totally agree with all the points you raise. It feels that this is a wasted episode in the story of the Flux, which is a daft thing to do with the second episode of the serial. The human General should have been shown to be under pressure from his seniors, rather than just be a generic military idiot - this would have better defined his approach to the conflict. In addition, when he ultimately destroys the Sontaran forces, the Doctor berates him, saying that he was so wrong to do that as they were retreating; she is is not being at all truthful here, as the Sontaran commander had already told her they were regrouping and resupplying, and then they would return. So the General was right to take the action he did to prevent further bloodshed and loss of life. Furthermore, when the Doctor returns to the modern day, she congratulates Dan and co for destroying the Sontaran forces there - consistent much? I don't think so - must've been her time of the month... Mary Seacole was just there to display historic diversity, and whilst the actress in the part was brilliant, the character as it is written is woefully incorrect (I suggest people read her memoirs before commenting). Anyway, another very enjoyable video review. Thank you. Take care Dude, and stay safe. :)

I think you can get more enjoyment from this story if you have seen the third doctor episode the time warrior it was the first sontaran design and this design is just basically just a redone version of the original plus the reference to commander Linx who is from that episode and the sontarans feel Much more like they do in classic who and as a classic who fan it makes me so happy

On War of the Sontarans, whilst the human General being characterised is an idiot feels cumbersome its inclusion is justified because it's a comment on the Charge of the Light Brigade which was a failed military action where British upper class military who were promoted based upon their class rather than their tactical prowess and lead a suicide charge against the Russians despite clear opposition from the infantry. Other contemporary tacticians who had worked their way up the ranks, knew that this action would result in most of the British troops being slaughtered but the General went ahead with the decision. And the other element I enjoyed was showing Sontaran culture I feel better than the Sontaran Stratagem/Poison Sky. Although if this is the end of the Sontaran stuff I will be disappointed. But I agree the rest of it is still dumb.

Oh yeah, for sure I think having dumb characters doesn't automatically make them a bad character. The character was depicted in this way for the message, but I think the message itself in its communication took a complete nosedive in the way it was depicted through these "Chris Chibnall Explains Everything" moments, using the Doctor as a mouthpiece. I suppose I must've come off in an angry way concerning the character, which I don't think was actually true. I have every problem with the way the message is set up to be explored, and as the theme of this episode, had almost no value in it. I appreciate, in a way, this historical resonance throughout Chibnall, but the messaging usually comes of as clunky and preachy, as I think it does here. Also another thing I've seen people praise about this episode that I suppose I agree with, the Sontaran stuff. I guess my in-awe with these scenes is that none of this is new stuff. We've seen Sontarans before, people that Chris Chibnall knows has written them before, so the whole "The Sontarans are written perfectly" praise, while in a large sense I agree, internally I'm like "well, yeah. They're Sontarans. They aren't that hard to write" But, to be fair, Chibnall has screwed up way more beloved villains way worse before, and he did a great job with them here. Totally get what you're saying, homeslice. I just kinda don't love at all the dumb stuff in this one. It plummets the episode for me.

no, my feelings are the same. In the first essay I blindly bashed Chibnall without my own criticism. Now, as I've seen them, I now dislike Chibnall based on my own experience watching. So, basically, some actual criticism is all the difference. There are, of course, intricacies to that, which were bankrupt and simplified in the first essay's take on the Chibnall era. Hope that clears things up.
