Peter Doodson, designer of the CD Jewel Case, also created the Push Package for Digital Compact Cassette during his career at Philips. In this interview he also discusses his conceptual design of a new portable DCC player.
A Concept for a Portable DCC Player which might use Present Day Technology
Basic premise is that pre-recorded and packaged DCC cassettes might have timeless universal appeal as personal desirable collectible items.
Giving pride of ownership in a physical sound carrier with aesthetic, tech and tactile qualities.
For sound extraction, the actual cassette might slide into the player unit in a way which echoes the concept of the push-package - it could then be lowered (powered or manual) onto the drive hubs/capstans ready to play. The cassette artwork would remain fully visible.
Operation would be by means of an e-ink touch screen with permanently visible control graphics.
The cassette could be played multiple times with the user listening conventionally via Bluetooth linked equipment. Or alternatively, the cassette could be played just once only, enabling the digital content to be downloaded or ‘dumped’ (without quality loss) onto inbuilt SSD capacity within the player. (Thanks to Albert Balendran for this concept)
The SSD capacity could be built within a removable part of the player - a control stick element - that would also contain the battery, the Bluetooth electronics and the e-ink controls.
This music file storage capacity could be many gigabytes in size enabling many cassette downloads to be easily stored within the control stick to satisfy every day listening requirements.
The original cassettes could then be archived, displayed at home or just kept as backups.
The removable control stick/bluetooth/power/SSD element could slip easily into a pocket or handbag and communicate as desired with Bluetooth headphones and powered speakers, etc., when on the move.
Player dimensions anticipated to be approximately 9 x 11 x 2cms.

That is a very nice sleek design concept, but one problem is that the slot-loading system for DCCs would make it incompatible with regular cassettes because they are not flat. Of course that's not such a problem for DCC enthusiasts today, but it would've been a big issue back in the '90s.

Great interview! I talked to Peter during the DCC convention and he is definitely one of those great (uncredited) engineers to whichPhilips owes a lot. I may not be able to create an awesome portable DCC player like the one Peter proposes, but dumping DCC's to SD card is in the works. Albert can take credit for officially bringing it up for the first time in the DCC documentary but I'm sure neither Albert nor I are the first people to think of the idea :)

Wonderful man, great career and inventiveness. I really am glad I learned of the DCC museum and the related videos about DCC. I have a relative whose husband worked for Philips and Polygram years ago in New York. I had a Norelco Cassette Corder in the 1960's, and I played tapes from it into my Grundig Portable receiver back in the early 1970's in a fashion like a boombox did that came along later.

Great insights to take dcc to the next level for todays consumers. Peter has a futuristic take on the dcc protable and I am glad he adopted the flash storage concept also, great minds think alike right Jac. Thx for super video Ralf.

At 6:54, the mock-up player in the bottom right is actually a Panasonic RQ-S1 cassette player with the front modified to see the DCC artwork. It is a very nice looking cassette player in its own right, and interesting that they used it for the DCC mock-up

The closeups of the never released design for the DCC cassette are awesome, they are much nicer than the ones that finally became the DCC shell. I'm not talking about the ones on the Tshirt, but the short closeups appearing in various places throughout the video.

It was a concept. There are currently no realistic plans to be building it. We really need to make a few steps first before any major company would be building a new DCC player. We won’t give up though.
