Mooie aanwinsten voor jullie museum. leuk om die video's te zien. Had vroeger een DCC-300 en die kon zelfs op Analoge Maxell XL-II-S audio tapes (na boren van 3 kleine gaatjes links A zijde) opnemen. Die cassettes heb ik nog steeds want ooit zal er wel weer een deck te krijgen zijn voor weinig. Kon, zover als ik er mee experimenteerde, dit alleen met deze Maxell tapes omdat ze van een soort rubber-look-achtig plastic waren waar een mini-drill geen problemen mee had en de band kennelijk goede magnetische eigenschappen voor digitale signalen bezat. Ook de tape geleiders en haspel coating aan de binnenzijde was extreem nauwkeurig en niets rammelde. Ik heb nog een tijdje gezocht naar de juiste potmeter om de bias beter te optimaliseren voor digitale opname op normale (analoge) tapes hetgeen een enorme besparing kon betekenen. DCC cassettes waren niet goedkoop integenstelling tot analoge varianten die voor 3 of 4 gulden (C90) over de toonbank gingen.

I never really thought of prototype consumer electronics as precious. Now I wish I hadn't partly scrapped a prototype Sony EV-S9000E Hi8 deck.

This is the first OEM DCC recorder that we've seen that's based on the second-generation electronics and mechanism by Philips. All the other non-Philips recorders are based on either the DCC-900 or the Matsushita chipset from 1993 that Ralf calls "4th generation". A very exciting find, indeed! The similarities with the DCC-600 and other 2nd gen recorders are striking , but there are some interesting differences: The shape of the PCB's is the same, but the Samsung has the transformer mounted on the bottom instead of the circuit board, and the power regulators are mounted on the case instead of the motherboard on the right. Assembling this recorder would have taken more handling than with the 600, which would make it more expensive to produce. The hidden voltage switch also doesn't make sense from a production point of view: it would either be exposed to the outside in a production recorder or it would be a wire bridge on the circuit board. 6:26 The "TRAIL RUN" (sic, should be TRIAL RUN) sticker on the mechanism was almost certainly put there by the factory in Hasselt Belgium that made the mechanisms. The 9249 code would indicate week 49 of 1992, which is when the DCC-900 had just started selling. The second generation recorders didn't arrive until late 1993. The display and the plugin electronic boards on the right side match the DCC-600 but the motherboard at the bottom of the right side, and the AC board on the left side are different. It's likely that when the mechnism was made, Philips hadn't finished developing the electronics yet, and it makes sense that they would develop the power supply and motherboard last. It's possible that the motherboard in the Samsung is a temporary version that was designed by Philips with oversized components (until they knew the final power draw of the entire machine) or maybe Samsung decided it would be cheaper for them to design their own power supply or use an existing design. The sticker only applies to the mechanism, but all of the above makes me think that the entire recorder may be a pre-production model intended for demonstration and review. I remember seeing a DCC recorder at the Firato consumer electronics show in Amsterdam that had a portrait mode drawer and a silver-ish colored case, but I seem to remember it was a German brand. Maybe I remember it wrong and it was this one? I guess I'll never know.

Samsung never went into volume production. The considered buying the 300/600 mechanism production line after Philips already moved to the next mechanism but never did so.

It's amazing to think there still might be unknown models of DCC out there, i wonder if there is a Chinese specific model.

Can these units use standard chrome cassettes for digital recording or must they be the expensive DCC cassettes ?

Must say, this particular unit panel fitting is of poor design. Although the inside is up to the highest standards, the outside gives it a cheap look and feel. Which is a shame. Love the LED display. Probably the last alphanumeric display that used the correct font.

I wonder if this was something 'in between' - a marketing test run, as we'd call it here. Or maybe a halo product like the pre-CD digital tape systems in Japan. And that Philips brochure! I don't think I'd be able to keep from rolling my eyes if I was told by a sales team that their client list included LMSI and Polygram. What were Philips subsidiaries supposed to do for their transport needs, go to Sony? :)
