So managed to get hold of a 2nd hand MFJ Eliminator at a good price, so its great to pick up the guys again that I cant normally hear to my north so a quick video today how I use one one to bring in the signals Northside of my apartment block.

Do a video on QRM Hunting. Use a nano VNA on your main aerials to see what they are resonant on and maybe try again with a bandpass or notch filter, or low pass filter that lets up to or around 27MHz through. That will make sure it is not the RF side picking up local noise. With a dipole you need it at least 1/4 wave away from anything and should have a BALUN on the coax, not just elements connected straight on, also a RF choke. Don't confuse a poor signal with hard to hear audio, or poor signal to noise ratio with "noise" or "interference ". The other person might have a poor setup. Move on to the type of power supply you have. A switching mode type from a computer is a really bad idea as they are not filtered and cause a lot of unwanted RF. The ones for radio do come with correct filters. I would use the traditional type with transformer. You can make a quick comparison by running the radio on a battery and seeing if the needle drops. Also try a mains filter on the power supply and ground the case of the radio. In extreme cases use ferrite beads on the power cable or do a few turns through a ferrite core. Move computers away from radios as they are not shielded to the standard we would all like. Have the radio aligned correctly or DIY if you have test equipment as quite often people poke about and ruin them. There are lots of ways to reduce noise. The main problem for you is all the equipment your neighbours are using. The aerial is in the wrong location! I would definitely ditch that dipole and get a roll of wire and make a simple inverted V . It can go to two trees or supports and doesn't have to be a perfect shape! You could also use a long wire and depending where you can secure the end, could go for an EFHW or end fed half wave designed for HF bands. On 10m and 11m it would be resonant and at multiple wavelengths, you could alter the radiation pattern from what you have now and get different contacts. That could be run on a slope down to a tree or support and because of the way it is matched, you wouldn't pick up much noise. Make it yourself if in to DIY.. The aerial doesn't need a ground plane either. I use them on 160M to 10M. Also get shut of power and swr meters hooked up, and any impedance matchers. If you need any ATU then your aerial is no good, the ATU only makes a radio see 50ohms ,it doesn't make an aerial resonant, it's still rubbish and unturned, but your radio power stage will not go bang. Lots of things to try. In extreme conditions try a magnetic loop on the balcony. That will not pick up noise, but you will have to move and tune it for best results. You can make one !

Great way to mix the signal. Diversity reception without using 2x receivers. Suggestion from experience if you ever use it for "noise cancellation" - get some copper shims (or something conductive) and shove them between the top plate and chassis with knobs and connectors. I put mine close to a major noise source, and the leaky metal enclosure was letting in too much noise prior to getting a good connection between the top metal plate cover, and the rest of the chassis.

Cheers it certainly works for what I need it to do and I will try and see if it gets rid if the noise as it can be very difficult here especially as I live very close to the city centre.

Hi Allan just watched your video and that's great news for you, just one question so when you are having a conversation with say too people from to different sides of your flats do you have to keep turning the nob , or is it done automatically , not saying that's a problem just wondering, if there is someting out there which does that sott of thing , because I'm just about to put my Arial up and properly have to h the same problem , anyway great show very interesting Al thanks for letting us see how things work, right just going to watch your newest vid , so cheers for the update and speak soon Alan from LUTON 💯👍

I use the mfj eliminator, it does help, I notice you have the phase right up, all you need to do is adjust the phase so you get best reception and lowest interference.

Hey bud , yeah as in the video you can see I use it to hear the North side of me on the SSD 5/8+, but I will play around with it though and see if I can drop that noise a bit, I would say that both antennas do not hear the same thing as im sort of blocked by the flat. Cheers.

@@Al.26TC101 yes use the phase to get best reception through both main ant and other antenna. I notice the eliminator may not work as well if not picking up the noise on one of the antennas , as you need to phase one against the other to null it out if you can.

Yeah sometimes they can work and sometimes not I think it all depends on what the QRM is, sorry to hear that, but I do use mine for other than dropping down the noise as stated in the video it helps me be able to listen in on my North facing antenna.
@OH2023-cj9if
@OH2023-cj9if 3 ай бұрын
It depends what the noise is caused by. If that dipole runs past anyone else's flat, it could be something as simple as a TV or radio or power supply causing interference. One good thing now is analogue phone lines are being replaced with fibre, so that's a huge source of interference being removed. The type of aerial in use is wrong for that location. I would go for a sloping long wire down to a tree, maybe inverted V to two supports. Use copper wire and it will not even be seen. The other thing to experiment with is a loop, full wave loop around the roof and coax down to flat. It wouldn't be seen.

@OH2023-cj9if I've tried a mag loop wasnt the best and tried a fair few antennas here, got to be honest and say that the dipole is working great, bit ill take on board what you have said, i like to experiment here.
