Debbie Bookchin's father's ideas inspired a Kurdish project based on ecology, non hierarchy, women's liberation and grassroots democracy.
At The World Transformed in September James Butler sat down with Debbie to discuss her father's ideas, the revolution in Rojava they inspired and more. This interview was recorded before recent events in which the US has withdrawn from North East Syria and Turkey has began an invasion.

I was just watching Beau of The Fifth Column talking about how Special Forces (Green Berets) who have been working with YPG forces in Syria are extremely unhappy with recent developments, to the point of uncharacteristically public denunciation of senior command and the CinC himself. I wonder how much the political ideas and organizing model of the Kurds has seeped into their consciousness. I wonder what we might expect from these guys in the months and years to come...

I am really glad Bookchins ideas are getting more attention. However I think there are real critique of libertarian municipalism those need to be internalized to develop the theory and the movement.

Really like the work you're doing amplifying the cause of the Kurds. In the light of our present climate crisis, I would be particularly interested to see more focus on the ecology aspect of their mission. Given the criticisms of XR not always engaging with indigenous/BME movements that are already working to tackle the climate crisis, could Novara do more to engage with existing movements by indigenous/repressed peoples that are working to fight the destruction of their natural world by neoliberal forces?

As the story goes, Gandhi read Thoreau and applied his ideas to the struggle in India, and his success there brought those ideas to the attention of MLK, bringing it all back home with the Civil Rights Movement. As the story goes, Öcalan read Bookchin and applied his ideas to the struggle in (Turkish and Syrian) Kurdistan, and his success there brought those ideas to the attention of [???], bringing it all back home with the [???] movement. Reality is never as the story goes, but the story serves as a shorthand way of describing the larger-scale and longer-term development of ideas and movements. It wouldn't surprise me much if future generations end up telling the story kind of like this. (Hoping, of course, for the success of the democratic confederalist experiment in Kurdistan.)
