Kicking off my Nightmare on Elm Street review series is the 1984 classic. This is one of my favorite movies of all time and still continues to be one of the best and scariest horror movies of all time.
A Nightmare on Elm Street revolves around several teenagers who are stalked and killed in their dreams (and thus killed in reality) by Freddy Krueger. The teenagers are unaware of the cause of this strange phenomenon, but their parents hold a dark secret from long ago.

Seriously the 80's horror movies were so scary because of practical effects. The face out of the wall creeps me out to this day...the remake with the cgi was freaking awful. The one the original Nightmare freaking awesome

Its truly a shame how the horror genre has fallen.. We went from monsters, to contemporary, psychological horror, to slashers, and revamped again (with Scream), then a shallow of remakes, ghost movies, shaking cam found footages. Now...nothing really. I am so happy to have grown up in the 80's and 90's. Simply able to enjoy (and re-enjoy) horror classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street (which for me started it all, and made me love Wes Craven) although I enjoyed his previous works but this one is his bonafied classic and to this day still holds up. Great review man. P.S. -- Dream Warriors kicks ass lol

The SilverScreen Analysis yea, i think at the time was tge most original idea! We had normal killers, lake killers, women killers, Stepfather, Sleepaway Camp, F13TH, Halloween, IT (if it counts), Child's Play (original, but a lot of movies took killer dolls forward, maybe even some before it), but a someone who kills you in your sleep/dreams/nightmares was really something new! But sadly, i think that the series was under fully control only when Wes Craven had the wheel of the project!

hey dude. You are right. You can find deleted scenes on youtube of A nightmare on elm st. One of the deleted scenes Nancy"s mother admitted she wasn't a only child. They cut the scene out for some reason. It was in the scene where Marg finally revealed to Nancy who Freddy was and how the parents killed them. It's quite a few awesome deleted scenes as well as Glen rising from the bed after Freddy kills him.

I remember that deleted scene. Apparently it wasn't just Nancy who had a murdered older sibling. Her mother mentions that Tina, Rod and Glen also had an older sibling killed by Freddy. I think that might have been on of the reasons that was left out, because it was too much of a stretch that all four friends had a murdered older sibling and neither of them know about them.
@Doctor_Odin

I think it's because it would suggest that it was Marge's nightmare and not Nancy's. Because think about it why wouldn't Nancy remember not to mention Wes originally wanted it to be an extended nightmare not open ended like it turned into.
@ChiGuy251
@ChiGuy251 5 жыл бұрын
I never knew those existed but it makes even more sense as to why Nancy's parents seemed so disconnected and turned to vices (one being an alcoholic and the other being a workaholic) and why they were involved in Freddy's murder after the trial.

I think they didn’t want to go over the whole child thing. Plus no one is going to be like, “Yeah, screw the people and time limit. Let’s do this!”. Fantastic review - pretty much agree with it 100%. ANOES (1984) is my favourite horror film and my favourite Wes Craven film. Think of all the classic horror films - Halloween, The Exorcist, Psycho, Alien, The Fly, etc. - and this film belongs among them, IMO. Like you, I noticed that Freddy's voice started off kinda 'thin' up until Nancy's school dream sequence, then became much darker and deeper from the bath tub nightmare onwards. Also like you, my fav scene is Nancy falling asleep at her school desk and ending up in the boiler room. I love the exchange where she asks Freddy "who are you?" and Freddy just smiles, lifts his sweater and slices open his stomach. If he's bad enough to slit open his own body, think what he's going to do to Nancy when he catches up with her! I also like the jail scene between Nancy and Rod, and the scene between Nancy and her mom that finishes with Nancy yelling "screw sleep!" There are a couple of tiny flaws in this film: Krueger going free because someone forgot to sign the search warrant in the right place; Nancy telling her dad to "break the door down in twenty minutes" - as if she can assemble all those booby traps, tuck in her mom, fall asleep and find Freddy all in 20 mins. I also agree that the ending with Marge being pulled through the front door felt tacked on. But the imagination of Wes Craven and the magnificent performance by Robert Englund make this film one of the classics and, of course, make me forget about any tiny flaws. This film gets 9/10 from me.

About your comment about Nancy having a sibling killed by Krueger at 10:00, there’s actually a deleted scene where Nancy’s mom actually said that that was the case. Not just Nancy, but Tina, Rob, and Glen all had brothers or sisters who were killed by Freddy. Incidentally, there happens to be a very good series of fan films about Freddy Krueger that I think you would really like. They chronicle his days as The Springwood Slasher, balancing his nightlife as the local serial killer with his day to day facade of being “Good old Mister Krueger down the street, devoted family man and all around good guy”. Here’s a link. I put all of the episodes together in a playlist, putting them in chronological order as to the events depicted rather than when each episode was released, creating a rather coherent story. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNd6qa9-3565qJ8.html Edit: Oh yeah. Glen actually DID dream about Freddy before the events of the movie. You’re forgetting that when Glen and Nancy were at Tina’s house early in the film, and Tina and Nancy were describing their nightmares to each other and realizing that they were dreaming about the same person. When Nancy describes Freddy’s sweater, Glen gets this sudden expression of recognition, indicating that he in fact did dream about Freddy. He just insisted that there wasn’t anything supernatural going on. Much like the female doctor in Part 3.

To answer your question, there was some additional dialogue cut from the scene with Nancy and her mother in the basement when Marge is explaining to Nancy who Freddy Krueger was. Marge reveals to Nancy that Tina, Rod, Glen, and Nancy herself all had a brother or sister once that was in fact killed by Freddy when he was alive. Why Wes Craven decided to shorten that scene I'm not sure, maybe the film was running too long or something. But yeah, it was an extended scene that was included along with a bunch of other extended scenes and alternate takes and endings on a special edition VHS box set of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

The dark tones of the mood, the cinematograpy, the colors, the onirism of the atmosphere, the black humor mixed with the horror and violence....damn, Craven was a master of the visuals and the performance of Englund is just memorable (try to find that creepy eyes in another killer...). And a moment to remember for centuries: TINA: Please, God... KRUEGER: This...is God. Is not strange that A Nightmare on Elm Street (only the 1st one) was a revolution on the slasher genre.

I think the reason Freddy killed Glen the way he did was to commit a murder in a way that had absolutely no rational explanation whatsoever to create even more fear in not just the kids but the adults too and probably to test how far their denial of his return would go before they accepted that what was going on was supernatural. In a deleted scene Glen's dad tells Lt Thompson Nancy's dad that he knows it was Krueger who killed Glen. Glen's dad is apparently religious too because he thinks Freddy coming back in their kids dreams to kill them is God punishing the parents for killing Freddy. So the parents knew all along that their kids were being killed in their dreams by Freddy but remained in denial about it until the events of Freddy vs Jason which is shitty parenting on their part. If you know Krueger's killing your kids in their dreams find ways to keep them awake or give them something so they won't dream when they sleep like they did with the Hypnocil drug in Nightmare 3 and Freddy vs Jason.

Wes is a legend for this movie. For me It's not just because It's one of the greatest horror films but because It's very well executed and it has great atmosphere, not just the horror aspects but the normal daytime, nighttime, 80s, teen and overall unique environment and feel. Movies that have rich environment always call me back to them and when I'm in the mood this is one of them. Freddy and the nightmare are great additions. Happy dreams Cody & friends! 🤠😎👍

"The Krueger transformation" part is interesting, Cody. More than once I've found myself wondering "Why didn't they modify Englund's voice in post-production, in those first line of the movie?". I have to say: I don't find R. Englund's voice scary. When they alter Freddy's voice and turn it into a (generic) demonic voice, though, it really gets to me (used to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid). By the end of ANOES he sounds like Freddy should sound. So... kudos to you, man. The more victims he kills the more demon-like Freddy becomes (altering his voice as well). It could also justify Freddy being slowed down by Nancy throwing a garbage can at him (in a dimension where he dictates the rules). At that point he only had 1 victim under his belt. The more victims he kills the more powerful and therefore less stoppable he becomes. I just wish good-old Freddy had been a little more subtle killing Glenn because - and I'm sure plenty of people have complained about this before - logistically speaking it makes no sense. Why would Freddy expose the supernatural element to the parents of the victims? Glenn's death is spectacular but it should've looked that way only for the dream world. In reality... Glenn could've suffocated in his sleep.

As far as the final scene, I look at it this way. Nancy took his power away but ... he may have gotten it back from another one of the kids on Elm Street allowing Freddy to resurface. He gets his power not just from Nancy's fear but others as well although (like Kristen Parker in part 3), Nancy may be a dream warrior and can control and manipulate her dreams allowing her to fight off Freddy better. I think later on because she meets someone more powerful in controlling their dreams, it left her vulnerable to be killed (because Kristen was powerful but not so powerful, she could always protect Nancy).

I like the ending , I personally take it two ways, one it’s that yes just a dream and Freddy is not gone, all they’ve learned is a way to combat him but they didn’t kill him, you can’t just forget an experience like that so it will always haunt them, hell is doesn’t even have to be actually Freddy haunting them so soon again, it could be a genuine natural nightmare. The second is that its for us, the audience: we have not escaped the nightmare. It’s a horror film , we should be left with a sense of dread ; we should be going home being afraid of our own sleep and nightmares

Working my way through your reviews and loving them. I was a huge NOES fan and remember getting the VHS as my 13th birthday present to show at my party. it went down a storm. If there's one feature that keeps coming up it's that with the exception of the Chuck Russell/Robert Wagner DW re-write, no one understood NOES better than Wes Craven. I'll grant that Ronnie Yu did an awesome job on Freddy v Jason admittedly. Imagine how even more epic the series could have been, had Wes been given full editorial control. New Line got greedy and milked their cash cow too heavily.

I grew up with these films as a kid. We'd have sleepovers on the weekend and get our parents to hire them out on VHS. imo, the recipe for a good Freddy movie is pretty well established: 1) Setting. What works best is the middle class suburban high school setting 2) Kills: There needs to be plenty of kills and they need to be imaginative 3) A solid plot: There needs to be an extra layer of Freddy's history added and the overall plot has to serve a purpose 4) The correct blend of dark humour and horror When you move away from the basics too much, the movie tends to feel flat and abstract from the Freddy story. Parts 5&6 in particular suffered with this. I only rank part 7 above 5&6 due to those two being so bad. Part 7 was a completely different plot ofc but it was supposed to be that way and so I see it in that context. I'd also rank the reboot above 5&6 for the same reason. The reboot at least stuck with most of the ingredients that make a great Freddy movie. The reboot didn't have Robert Englund and so it was a slightly darker and less humorous Freddy. What I liked about the reboot was that it brought something to the table in that it elaborated on Freddy's past.

Just a few thoughts 1. Glenn did know about the nightmare. Look back to when they were at Tina's house and Tina was telling Nancy about the nightmare. Then Nancy starts telling her about having a nightmare and Glenn looks up as if to say 'woah'. He knew the whole time but was in severe denial. 2. While I'm okay with the idea that the whole movie is a cognitive nightmare for Nancy, it doesn't really explain the ending with everything starting to happen while she's ideally awake. I believe that Nancy never woke up from that alarm she set and everything that she thinks is happening after she pulls out Freddy is actually still her dreaming all the way up to her getting in the car and being drove away. You could also argue that she fell asleep as far back as when she nodded off while waiting on Glenn to call hence Freddy being on the phone. That ALL of that was one big nightmare. If there's one thing that was good from the remake it was the side effects of insomnia being talked about and that after 3 days, the side effects kick in as well as the risk of slipping into a coma when you do finally fall asleep. I haven't actually Googled that to see if it's true but if it is true and just not explained in the original (like several things that weren't explained but were subtext), it's very possible that she slipped into a coma when she did finally go to sleep which is why she couldn't wake herself up. At that point, it had been the 7th day. Even if she didn't go coma, at the very least she slept through her alarm. It was only set for 10 minutes lol. How she survived during a coma? I'll explain in a later comment. I hope this makes some sense.

@Amber_xo_133

All of the boiler room footage in the film was shot in the basement of the Lincoln Heights Jail in Los Angeles, which was condemned shortly after production wrapped, due to high levels of asbestos. The scene where Freddy's arms elongate were achieved by having men with fishing poles on each side of the alley operating a set of puppet arms attached to Robert Englund. Alan Pasqua, Heather Langenkamp's boyfriend at the time of the shooting, is credited for creating Freddy's nursery rhyme. Heather Langenkamp beat over 200 actresses for the role of Nancy Thompson, among them Jennifer Grey, Demi Moore, Courteney Cox, Tracey Gold, and Claudia Wells. The original glove was later used in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985) and was also seen hanging on the wall of the work shed in Evil Dead II (1987). This was in response to the use of The Evil Dead (1981) on a television screen in this film, and part of a continued banter between directors Wes Craven and Sam Raimi. However, when Wes Craven loaned the glove to the A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) set it got lost, and it is rumored to be in possession of Robert Englund's agent. The inspiration for the character of Freddy came from several sources in Wes Craven's childhood. Fred Krueger was a schoolmate of his, with whom he had shared a paper route and who had bullied him for several years. In The Last House on the Left (1972), Craven also used this experience as inspiration, calling the villain Krug. Freddy's burns came from a man with severe burn scars by whom Craven had once been terrified as a child, and Freddy's attire (especially the dirty clothes and hat) was inspired by an alcoholic hobo that Craven saw staring at him through his window one day when he was 10 years old. Wes Craven's original concept for Freddy Krueger was considerably more gruesome, with teeth showing through the flesh over the jaw, pus running from the sores, and a part of the skull showing through the head. Make-up artist David B. Miller argued that an actor couldn't be convincingly made up that way, and a puppet would be hard to film and wouldn't blend well with live actors, so these ideas were eventually abandoned. Film debut of Johnny Depp It would take about three hours to get Robert Englund into his Freddy make-up. The very first time Freddy is seen in the movie, he isn't being played by Robert Englund but by special effects man Charles Belardinelli, as Belardinelli was the only one who knew exactly how to cut the glove and insert the blades. Amanda Wyss was handing out candy at her mom's house on the Halloween following the film's release and was surprised to see so many trick-or-treaters dressed as Freddy. She eventually told one of them that she played Tina in the movie, but he didn't believe her. One of the main reasons Johnny Depp was chosen was because Wes Craven's daughter thought he was "dreamy," and threatened to run away from home if he wasn't cast in the movie. According to Wes Craven, Robert Englund was not the first choice for the role of Fred Krueger. Craven had initially wanted a stuntman to play the part, but upon testing several stuntmen, he realized he needed a real actor. Other ideas was to cast a elderly actor but he feared they would be too soft for the way he would've wanted the character to act. Englund eventually got the part by showing up at his audition with ash smeared under his eyes to sink them, greasing his hair back with a dipstick from under the hood of his car, and blinking as little as possible. According to Robert Englund, he based the physicality of Freddy on Klaus Kinski's performance in Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979). Englund also says on his DVD commentary that in his mind, the backstory for Freddy was based on something from his own childhood. On Valentine's Day when Englund was in school, everyone in the class made Valentine cards for one another, but there was one boy who received no cards from anyone. Englund theorized that this boy went on to become Freddy. The sparking glove effect seen throughout the movie was achieved by attaching the glove to a car battery. The famous scraping noise was created by scratching a steak knife on the underside of a metal chair. In the original script, Freddy's famous red-and-green sweater was red and yellow (based on the colors worn by Plastic Man, who, like Freddy, could change his form; the idea was that whatever Freddy changed into would be yellow and red). However, when Wes Craven read an article in "Scientific American" in 1982 that said the two most contrasting colors to the human retina were red and green, he decided to alter the colors. The idea behind the glove was a practical one on Wes Craven's part, as he wanted to give the character a unique weapon, but also something that could be made cheaply and wouldn't be difficult to use or transport. At the time he was studying primal fears embedded in the subconscious of people of all cultures, and discovered that one of those fears is attack by animal claws. Around the same time, he saw his cat unsheathe its claws, and the two concepts merged, although in the original script the blades were fishing knives, not steak knives, as in the finished film. Freddy Krueger was designed by Wes Craven to be the typical "silent" serial killer, such as Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers. However, in the sequels, Freddy developed a cheeky persona that enabled him to be the black-humored villain. The fictional address of the house in the film is 1428 Elm Street. The actual house where filming took place is located in Los Angeles, California, on 1428 North Genesee Avenue. The numbers "1428" on the side of the house were stolen and never returned according to the house's present owner, Angie Hill, who was quite upset over it. This is shown on the second disc of the documentary Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (2010). The words "Elm Street" are not spoken at all during the movie. The little girl skipping rope was the daughter of the couple whose home was used as Tina's house. Elm Street was named after Elm Street in Wheaton, Illinois, where Wes Craven went to college. Glen was supposed to rise from the bed after the bed bloodbath scene, but that was cut. The scene where Freddy presses through the wall above Nancy was shot by stretching a sheet of spandex across a hole in the wall and pressing against it. In the shot, Freddy is played by special effects designer Jim Doyle. Although the character is credited as "Freddy" Krueger in the sequels and is more well-known by that name, he is credited as Fred Krueger in this film. In this movie, Nancy is shown watching Raimi's The Evil Dead (1981) as she struggles to stay awake watching it. Craven decided to include the scene because Raimi had featured a poster of Craven's The Hills Have Eyes (1977) in that film as a jab to show audiences the movie they're watching is scarier than Craven's. As a response to Craven's in-joke, Raimi showed Freddy Krueger's glove in the tool shed scene of Evil Dead II (1987), and later in Ash vs Evil Dead (2015) in honor of his passing Special make-up effects artist David B. Miller based Freddy's disfigurement on photographs of burn victims he saw at UCLA Medical Center. Nancy's house has a blue door in this movie. In all of the sequels, it has the iconic red door. The only "Nightmare on Elm Street" film where Freddy does not have stripes on the sleeves of his infamous sweater. In the opening dream, Tina sees and hears lambs. This is a play on the phrase "Like a lamb to the slaughter," a phrase originating in the Bible. It means an innocent and helpless creatures that is unknowingly in danger, an apt description of Tina and her friends. Charlie Sheen, John Cusack, Brad Pitt, Kiefer Sutherland, Nicolas Cage, and C. Thomas Howell were considered for the role of Glen. Prior to making the film, Amanda Wyss had never seen a horror movie, and Heather Langenkamp had only ever seen Burnt Offerings (1976). Heather Langenkamp's favorite of her performances. Over 500 gallons of fake blood were used during filming. Freddy Krueger has less than seven minutes of screen time. Robert Englund cut himself the first time when he tried on the infamous Freddy glove. An omen that Johnny Depp's character is about to die occurs as he is lying in bed listening to his radio. The broadcaster announces, "It's midnight, and you're listening to station KRGR." KRGR is "Krueger" without the vowels. The poster above Glen's bed in his death scene is the "Grace Under Pressure" album cover by Canadian rock trio Rush. Body count: 4 In his room, Glen has a stuffed vulture doll just behind his bed that looks down on him, an omen of his impending fate since vultures are known to feast on dead animals.

It makes total sense for Freddy to get more aggressive and dark as he gains power. I just had a thought. I wonder if the order he kills in isn’t random but going after either the most scared person, so he gets stronger or the least scared person so the fear has time to build and power him. That gives an added element to characters as the most scared person isn’t always who you think it is. Rod being second victim for instance. Nancy is my favourite classic end girl, if you don’t count Sarah Conner. I also love Erin from You’re Next. They are all bad ass and fight back and I love it. Icons.

I was just watching the review and saw you mention that you thought that Nancy had a sibling that was killed by Freddy Kruger but you didn't think there was Proof. Well she did have a older sibling that was killed by Freddy. In a deleted scene from the first movie, where Nancy's mom tells here about Fred Kruger there is an alternate version where she tells her all her friends has older siblings, then states that even she was not always an only child. There was multiple takes of that scene but the one I al talking about I found on a special edition VHS set.

I have been binge watching a lot of your older vids, which is why I'm commenting on older ones haha. Totally agree with you about everything you said in this review Cody. For me this movie is a horror masterpiece, though it is just a fraction below Dream Warriors. I was obsessed with this movie growing up, well the whole series up to that point (except for Freddy's Dead). I loved how Freddy is just pure evil in this one, it truly was horrifying to me as a kid. I will add that in my opinion, in NOES II while it's not in my top three Nightmare films, Freddy in part II is a bit Darker and creepier even. just my opinion. I think the score to this film is overlooked a lot of times (along with Halloween III). Finally this film has one of my favorite openings with Freddy piecing together that horrific glove. its dark, gritty and I love it. perfect opening to a near flawless film. ✌

Well, this is going to be a hot take, I'm not as big a fan of the original "A Nightmare on Elm Street" by Wes Craven. That said, it is a horror movie that I do respect and acknowledge as a classic. I agree with everything Cody said in his review. The score is spine tingling, the kills are blood chilling, and Nancy feels like a real fleshed out badass. The only thing that holds it back for me is the ending. If it wasn't there, this would have surpassed movies like "Halloween" for me.

Nancy is my turn to final girl who faces things, as her mother puts it. Turn your back on your monsters, dissolving them as a result. Wes craven created his final girls based on his own inner demons creating really good messages/morals to his stories of survival. Love his wisdom he passes on in his stories.
