In my opinion there are two types of Watch Collectors. There are true Collectors that accumulate many many watches. Maybe they Collect specific Watch Brands or specific Watch Types. Maybe they collect some of absolutely everything. They just want more. Then there are the Watch Enthusiasts that only collect a few very specific watches that fit a particular need, or desire. That's me, the Watch Enthusiast. I limit my Watch Collection to 6 pieces. That number became the limit when Amy bought me a Watch box with 6 slots for Christmas.
Keeping your watch collection to only 6 pieces isn't easy. First of all when I received the box I had around 12 watches. So immediately I had to figure out which 6 would make the cut. Fortunately by that time I already had a few favorites, and also had a good idea of what I like most in a watch. Honestly the watch in this video was purchased much later but if I had it then it would have made the cut, but not for the reasons it does now. At that time the cost of the watch was more of a factor, and the Brand mattered more also. I wasn't anywhere near as interested in Microbrand watches as I am now. I just didn't know enough about Microbrands.
The Pilot watch and Field watch style generally don't appeal to me because usually they are quite boring designs. They are nostalgic timepieces for those of you that served in the military and I get that. I spent a short amount of time with the Canadian Army Reserves but never actually served and at that time owned a Citizen Promaster because I was into Scuba diving. A Field watch wasn't on my radar at all.
When I purchased this watch I wasn't looking to add a Pilot's watch to my collection. I was actually checking out a Mido Ocean Star, and during my conversation with the Salesperson he challenged my dislike for Military style watches by showing me the Alpina. Obviously I was impressed and despite the 44mm case which normally I wouldn't even consider it fit my wrist well. It was about I year later when I found one for a very good price and pulled the trigger.
Are there specific watch styles that you avoid, and what would it take for you to change your mind about them? Let us know in the comments and if you enjoy our content please SUBSCRIBE.

I must admit, I'm a sucker for pilot and field watches. I can completely appreciate why they don't float your boat, so to speak, and I would once have agreed with you; having shared that opinion many years ago. The thing that attracts me to them is their 'built-for-purpose' no-nonsence design, built to a set of requirements as an incredibly important tool in a time where it could literally be life or death. I like that each design, no matter how subtle the changes may appear, speaks to its intended use, in times of war in particular. Ive always been a passionate aviation and history buff, I'm also British, so some of these watches, such as the 'dirty dozen' and fleiger watches make me feel a whole range of thoughts and feelings when I look at that simple dial.. and true to form, it tells the time, clearly and quickly. I do like to see modern twist to these classic, simple designs though. It's never a bad thing to merge old with the new. All the best Jason

Love the comment and for Collectors interested in Military history they are definitely nostalgic. I got into Scuba diving early in life so the Citizen Promaster and Seiko Diver's are always appealing to me for that reason. I have another video I'm working on that speaks to the appeal of specific watches and why they have such a strong following.

I did have a Khaki field Automatic but ended up selling it since it didn’t give me that rugged field look, I would give a field watch another try maybe it will workout with khaki Mechanical Bronze

@@Gearsandco I love the look of Brand new Bronze watches. I've never bought one though because I don't trust them to patina in a way that's appealing. For a Field Watch though that might be the best choice.

@@WhyWeBuyIt it will patent based on the environment your in, and if it can withstand water resistance you can dunk it in Zinc and it will get back to brand bew shiny condition

I own a Stowa Partitio (white) which according to some is a field watch. I enjoy it greatly, but would place it more towards the dress spectrum. I also own a Citizen Chandler. That I truly see (and treat) as a field watch and serves as a beater. The fact is that generally the pilot and field style are just fine, but few are exciting to me, and some thay excite don't do so in the right way. My preferences lean towards dress-sports designs.

@@benjaminvis You and I definitely find similar watches appealing. This watch has basically become a bit of a daily beater for me. I wear it cycling or fishing because if it gets a little scratched up it doesn't hurt the look of it. That Stowa is a simple but refined timepiece. It's the case design that sets it apart.

@@WhyWeBuyIt I also enjoyed your video on Wise watches. I will soon have my experience to add. I went with the AD15 right from the design sheet (it may turn out to be too much, but perhaps I'll like that) and after seeing Peter Kotsa's video on the last bronze AD8 I permitted myself my 'second go' at the dive genre (I had admired the AD8 series until then, but his video effectively just sold it to me. I am also a sucker for a good moody green, though on Wise's website it looks a lot more warm and lovely than in Peter's video). I had them sent to a future address, so they're waiting for me there. The AD7's also appealed, but I felt unsure about the damascus steel. This enamel version (or the reddish brown) might be an excellent choice for me too. But now first I'll have to find out how the ones waiting for me will suit.

@@benjaminvis Amy loved the AD15. She was really trying to get me to buy it. If I wasn't as strict about my 6 watch limit, I would have. You will love the AD8. They are purpose built but also classy in appearance. True dress divers.

@@WhyWeBuyIt sounds very encouraging. I have no such strict limits, but know I would benefit from having them! I think my collecting is still firmly in an explorative state. I'd like to hone in qualitatively, but I'm not sure yet where that will lead me.

@@benjaminvis Yeah it does take some time to really figure out what appeals to you most. I have a series planned where I examine what really appeals to other Collectors based on their Collections and the answers they provide to a few questions.

well for 44mm I don't think it's for me, IT'S TOO DAMN LARGE, even for large wrist people!

Keep in mind that my wrist is 7.25 inches around and it fits fine. I wouldn't have even considered it either if the Salesperson hadn't shown it to me. Of course it won't fit every wrist.

@@WhyWeBuyIt yeah I get it, I do prefer smaller watch more classic dimensions and with my 6.3in wrist I can’t get huge ones. I’m not a big fan of field watches nor pilots ones (other than the boring Rolex Explorer 36 which I love)
