Like 10,000 other people this past couple of weeks (I noted your subscriptions when one of your wonderful videos was suggested to me by YT a couple of weeks ago), I am a new convert to your channel - thank you for your wonderful poetry and insights into the world of Tolkien etc. I also decided pipe smoking seemed worth a try! 2 weeks ago I had never given it a go, but today I received my third pipe, a Peterson Lestrade. I sat on my patio in the cool Berkshire morning, and with my novice skills, enjoyed a lovely Kendal aromatic. The Peterson is truly a wonderful pipe. Yet when I enjoyed this morning pipe smoke, I had no idea it was International Pipe Smoking Day! So thank you again Malcolm, for enlightening me! Best Regards, Alastair.

Bosun cut plug is what you want Alastair, one of the oldest gawith blends still in production, and you will see why. It is like time travelling to the victorian era and unlike any aromatic you have ever smoked before.

A patio, porch, hammock or riverside are all wonderful places for a peaceful pipe, and what a wonderful story of you doing so on the day meant for it of all days! Welcome aboard, friend.🤜🤛❤️

Funny, that’s my exact story, stumbled upon his video a month ago, never smoked a pipe before. Now I’ve ordered three pipes and several types of tobacco, and ordered the Hobbit and the Lord of The Rings books to enjoy while I smoke. I am having the darndest times figuring out how to light and get a good amount of smoke from my pipe though. As a cigar smoker, I like to get a great deal of smoke and a good draw and been a frustrating start.

Got a vintage custombilt pipe and some well aged Northwoods tobacco on the agenda later today, with a cup of good coffee and a quiet hour's contemplation. It's a lost art these days, but for those of us who still appreciate it, there are many moments spent with a pipe that are more full, more present, and more lived than whole busy days I've spent at work.

Thank You Malcolm. “Smoke Rings from my Pipe” is how I discovered you, a while back. Never gets old. I quote it often, usually simply “practice the art of sitting still.”

I do not smoke, but I love this poem and the idea of ending the day practicing "the art of simply sitting still" while doing something I love (for me it's drinking a frosted glass of root beer). Some of the most impactful moments of my life have been those of quiet solitude where my mind takes me to wisdom I did not know existed. I'm so glad to have found this channel.

a poem for Malcolm Guitte: A legend of our times reaching through the smoke and forming exquisite rhymes a seer of truths, a constitution unshakable as treebeard's roots tastes exquisite, choosing only the best, Who else could pull off that stylish waistcoat vest.

I recall in the memoirs of Eugene Sledge (a man who fought with the US Marines in the bitter fight to wrest control of the Pacific islands from the Japanese in the Second World War) he explains his taking to pipe smoking during this period. Pipe smoking for him was something like the antithesis of the brutal horrors he experienced during the War - a peaceful, contemplative, civilised act.

Back in December of 1967 after I was 'requested' to join the U.S. Army, during breaks in training we were told "light them if you have them", cigarettes. I didn't like the taste or the smoke getting closer to my face, same with my next choice, cigars. So I tried a pipe, I have been smoking them ever since. Often too many in a day due mostly to boredom. Now I limit myself to two a day and find them more enjoyable. I also enjoy your readings, a pleasant period in my day. I have been buying books since then also but don't always read them right away. I have never read much poetry but I have a large hardcover book of 1000 Irish poems that I haven't read yet. I think it is time to take it out of the bookcase and immerse myself in a new to me literary experience. Thank you Malcolm for your many inspirations. Happy ISPD to all here.

Just sitting here enjoying at slightly breezy, 70 degree evening on a back porch somewhere in Alabama after a not-so-hard-day's work (if I'm being honest)......smoking my pipe, sipping on Clyde May's whiskey, and listening to a wonderful poem that is in danger of being drowned out by the Deep South's "Year of the Cicada." So glad I picked up the pipe (less than a week ago), as the poem, regardless of minimal durational experiential knowledge, has taken on a relatable meaning that otherwise would have been unbeknownst to a "simple kinda man."

Power cut in my local area today, I've had an analogue day, the first of which I can remember. Read some Terry Pratchett, dinner by candlelight and made brews with a camping stove. Anyway, just wanted to say that as my laptop battery only lasts about 10-15 minutes these days I thought it fitting that that time should be spent watching Malcolm. Once power is restored I'll be back amongst the all insistent trill, but today at least , I stood still.

My late father was a life-long pipe smoker so the rituals of packing, lighting, tapping out and cleaning are a part of my fabric. He once told me that he "used it" in business negotiations: when the "adversary" would put a question to him he would pointedly poke around in the bowl with a match, go through the ritual of lighting, and take a few contemplative draws, as if pondering the question. In reality he knew exactly what he was going to say, he was just making the opponent sweat!

Your videos are amazing. You represent a part of the British culture that I fear is slowly dying and being diluted by "multiculturalism" and technology. I'm late 20s now and hope I'm just like you when i'm older. Your videos are my introduction to pipe smoking. I've always wished cigarettes were healthier and perhaps pipe smoking can be my new weekend hobby. I'd really like to see a video all about getting started - some recommendations on pipes, tobaccos and techniques. Thank you!
