Before Bohemian Rhapsody, A Day in the Life and Paranoid Android, The Who released a 9 minute long mini-opera in 1966: six different movements contained in a song.
It was a predecessor to their later rock opera albums Tommy and Quadrophenia.
The story is about a young girl whose lover leaves for almost a year. While he's gone, her friends set her up with Ivor the Engine Driver. The lover returns to find Ivor sleeping with his girlfriend. She confesses, and he ultimately forgives her
In 1968 the Who were invited to perform at the Rolling Stones upcoming film The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. The Who performed A Quick One While He’s Away live. (John Lennon performed Yer Blues with the Dirty Mac at this show too). The Stones felt upstaged and decided not to release the movie until 1996. My cover is based on this live version
Prior to this December 1968 show, Pete Townshend was mainly using a Fender Stratocaster, Marshall or Sunn amplifiers, and a Marshall Supa Fuzz pedal. By the Rock and Roll Circus performance in December 1968 he moved to his famous Gibson SG Special guitar. He would use this as his main guitar live until 1973, and in the studio until 1972. For this performance he used a Sound City L100 amp, essentially a Hiwatt CP103. For fuzz he used a Shaftesbury Duo Fuzz, which was an early incarnation of the Univox Super-Fuzz
Like Townshend, bassist John Entwistle used many instruments throughout his career. From 1968 to 1972 he exclusively used Fender Precision basses live. For the Rock and Roll Circus he used his favorite 'Frankenstein' Precision bass, which was comprised of parts from several different Fender basses. He also used the Sound City/Hiwatt L100 amp in 1968
For this cover I'm using my original 1970 Gibson SG Special. This is running into my Analogman King of Tone overdrive pedal and my Wattson FY-6 Fuzz. The FY-6 is an exact copy of a Univox Super Fuzz. You hear me turn on the fuzz pedal at 6:27
My amp is a 1965 Fender Bassman
My bass is a 1978 Fender Precision with '62 Reissue pickups. This is also running into my 1965 Fender Bassman

I'm a Who fan, but that's kinda unfair. The Who were at their prime. And The Rolling Stones were going through a lot of difficulties, such as drug abuse problems and Brian's depression. And you can tell that by watching that show.

hey man the stones didnt release this gold for like 40 years cuz they felt upstaged. i rlly dont know too much about their relationship with brian besides he was doing a lot of drugs and not contributing much to the sessions but i dont know how they felt creatively but it didnt seem like they gave him much to do at this show. shame because he definitely was the most interesting out of them

@@DeeckyRizzo I would say the Who in their prime was a several year period, from Tommy to about Quadrophenia, and even before that they were Englands best act several years prior and after only being rivalled by maybe Zeppelin or the Experience. Even Keith Moons last show was amazing, the legendary show at Shepparton Studios. Even the Rolling Stones in their prime can’t hold a candle to the Who

I was obsessed with this version for years but never learned how to play it exactly. What impresses me most about your version is not only the precision of the parts but the control of the tone and volume knobs, exactly the way Towsend uses it live! For content like this I think KZfaq is one of the best tools on the Internet.

Here we go! This is some awesome work here. The tones are pretty close to spot on, which is hard to do when you don't have the prototype Hiwatts that Pete and The Ox were using. John's playing is particularly difficult to replicate...John Entwistle was like Jeff Beck: there will only be one of him and his inimitable style. Smashed it right out of the park! Glad to see I'm not the only one crazy about The 'Oo!

Like Townshend, bassist John Entwistle used many instruments throughout his career. From 1968 to 1972 he exclusively used Fender Precision basses live. are you sure about that? i've seen photos from them performing 'LIGHTHOUSE' songs on stage and he's using a 'thunderbird'. that would've been late 70 early 71. a proper 'thunderbird' not the 'fenderbird' hybrid that came later. he definitely used the frankenstein fender p quite alot but i don't think exclusively. also, for the record i cannot figure out why THE STONES thought that was a bad performance on their part. i understand JOHN LENNON and THE WHO were tough acts to follow but i think it's some of the greatest footage of them ever. AND the last ever footage of them with BRIAN JONES. alot of what makes 'r n'r circus' so awesome is how totally different the 3 main acts were each great for different reasons.
@sampopkin

Check thewho.net for more info on Entwistle's bass gear. You're correct about the thunderbird, but he did use Precisions as late as 1972

Do you think the hypnotic octave bouncing bass line during the first part (down your street…) was influenced by (or influenced) Paul McCartney’s bass playing? (In songs like Tomorrow Never Knows or Rain)
