Fun fact. It’s not “Jerrald”, it’s “Cello”. Townshend wanted cellos playing at that part but producer and Kit Lambert ( manager ) said they couldn’t afford it, so he put the word cello in to the tune they would’ve played.

It's always a pleasure watching Keith Moon going berserk on the drums. I saw The Who back in the '70's at an outdoor concert and it was still one of the loudest concerts that I have ever attended in my 65 years. 🤘✌️

Nice to hear someone extolling the virtues and importance of John Entwistle's vocals on The Who's sound. And what about his playing on this? His bass is literally driving the song and is a big reason why they had such a enormous live sound. And in case it hasn't been mentioned, that performance pretty much blew the Stones off the stage on their own special.

What they’re singing at 15:37 is “cello, cello, cello, cello…” because on they wanted to have cellos for that segment on the recording but they couldn’t afford paying for the musicians.

This is from “The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus”. It was filmed in December of 1968 and was supposed to be shown on television, but for various reasons it never was. This was Brian Jones last time performing in public with the Stones, he drowned in his swimming pool in July of 1969. The Stones felt their performance wasn’t that good (some songs they did well, others not as good) because they were all exhausted. The Who were fantastic as always. As far as the title of the song, I have English relatives, and the term “A quick one” is considered to be quite dirty, because it means a quick....well, let’s just say “sexual act” so I don’t get banned from KZfaq.

Besides this obviously being one of the best rock performances ever and absolute legend, I do love you're guys' dynamic. I love how Dad, obviously very familiar with this masterpiece, keeps checking for son's reaction just at the crucial parts and nodding with satisfaction when the part hits home. Really lovely reaction. Keep it up! Also, great T-Shirt, son!

Hi Larry and Ethan! Hope all is going well. I first heard and saw this performance probably a bit over a year ago now. This is certainly one of my favorite performances from the band. It's one of those performances that get better and better each time you have watch and have a listen. They all put on one hell of a performance, but Keith Moon is just an animal back there. Still have no idea if that's water or his sweat towards the end. Also I'm pretty sure Larry is right. I think during the Leeds performance Pete talks about the song, and mentions that girl and the engine driver were indeed caught in the act.

Ok you’re asking for ass-kicking deep cuts from The Who..., how about ‘However Much I Booze’ from the ‘By Numbers’ album... (aka The Who By Numbers). An absolute drumming tour de force by Moon, not to mention wicked guitar picking from Pete..., and of course John as well. With ‘standing naked in front of the entire world’ vicious self deprecating lyrics from Pete.

"This is from the "Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus" Special! The Who were guests and were invited to the show. They said "Sure" and stopped by from a tour they were doing at the time. It underwhelmed them and there performance that night so they never released it!"

That was kind of fun, mixing rock with country, folk, music hall, opera influences. BTW, Jon Anderson and "The Band of Geeks' are playing in Collingwood NJ April 28 & 29. The Band of Geeks are an online supergroup of A-list musicians who cover lots of classic and progressive rock. They play Yes tracks better than the current official lineup, which is why Jon has chosen to tour with them and perform some classic material. Just thought you (well Ethan mostly) might like a headsup.

LOL. Jerald. they are saying Cello. when they recorded this song, they were kinda cash poor and couldn't afford to bring in any classical musicians to play the string parts behind them, so they sing the cello harmonies as Cello Cello Cello. etc.... edit also the libretto of this opera is the same story that tommy starts with a woman husband/boyfriend goes off to war and is presumed dead she is s ad and its well known around her street, town, city, etc of her story why shes sad. one day ivor convinces her that he can take her mind off things and she can spend time with him. obviously "took a nap" is not sleeping her husband/boyfriend makes it back from the war and surprises her . she confesses that she has been consoling herself after time in the arms of Ivor. her beau forgives her. end of story. some takeaways.... listen to the band play at the part of "My name is Ivor, Im an engine driver" the music is supposed to simulate a train starting up the drum rolls are the sound of the engine pistons turning the wheels. "soon be home" is traveling music. the snare rimshots are mimicking horse hooves. as mentioned above they are singing Cello at the beginning of you are forgiven. It was rumored that this special (rolling stones RnR circus) was never shown after its premiere because of The Who's performance stealing the show from the stones. IDK folklore.

This was filmed about 2 weeks before the Get Back documentary was filmed, with the exact same director. John Lennon was there and MLH made him do multiple takes of band intros. That's why in Get Back, we see John Lennon doing sendups of his band introductions. "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bottles!"

Lol, Pete himself never analyzed the story this much. You’ve got the basics.., Guy is gone ‘nigh on (almost) a year.., she cries, she cheats, he returns, she confesses..... she is forgiven. It’s that simple. The song was written more as an ‘operatic’ exercise for Pete..., more than anything else.
