Somehow the list is only growing longer! But a rainy Saturday in March can only be the best time to crack on and get things done. We spray our new anchor chain, we service the engine (thanks again Stuart!), we clean the boat and then enjoy the evening with our good friends Sophie and Yaz.

About Us
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit

Biologist here. If you see the fungus (ascomycete), that is only the "head" of the fungus , the widely branched "arms" (hyphae) are already throughout the bread, just invisible. Bread in the refrigerator, no fungus feels happy there. :)

Just watched your June 13 issue. You guys are so much fun. When you become broadside to the swell, ready your small anchor (lunch hook) , back the boat down on the main anchor so your bow is facing the swell let out most of your chain, set the lunch hook astern, pull ahead on the chain. The stern anchor will keep the boat into the swell (assuming you don't expect a big wind change in direction). Also, I got a chuckle over your super cautious nature, when I saw your sheet around a self tailing winch AND cleated. Also, next time you shop at the chandlery, buy yourself a round metal radar reflector and attach it permanently high on the backstay.

Did not see a torque wrench, if you haven't one, get one. Always good to put a bit of lube on the impeller as it will run dry the first bit. Washing up liquid will do. If you have to sand something that needs to be flat, glue the sandpaper to a bit of glass. Wet/ dry paper is better to use for metals.

im a bit late to the party, but heres some mold related stuff: generally, the softer the food and the higher the water-content is, the more risky it is to cut away moldy parts, reversely, the harder it is the less risky it is. hard cheese for example is totally fine to eat if you cut away the moldy parts. soft cheese and other milk products on the other hand shouldnt be eaten anymore once they have started molding. same with bread, fruit and vegetables, risky as f*** to eat when they have mold on it. even tho you might have been fine this time, it's really not worth the risk IMO, since mold related food poisoning can be life-threatening if you are unlucky. especially if you are out on the ocean days away from the closest hospital it might not be the best idea to risk it ;)

.... laughing .... removing the mold from the bread, well done, people don't tend to do it these days .. my method is like taking eyes out of a potato ... loved how Becka took the bite out of the bread and got the desired reaction from Zach she knew she would get ... good score on the chain ... good choice taking the diesel class Zach .... there are a lot of people that have chosen to install the serpentine kit replacing the fan V-belt .. does not have the v-belt wear .. google and YT to see if the kit is for your engine and the pros and cons .. have I used, don't even have a boat as of yet, still in the getting the ducks in a row stage .... Yup! .. when you are fully immersed time does just slip away never to be seen again ... thx for the share Zach and Becka .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

@@TeuluTribe ..... you are so right about the amount of food that is wasted .. I was informed 3 years ago that I am a full blown diabetic and chose to manage through diet and exercise .... first was remove the consumption of sugar and carbs, carbs are sugar in disguise. with this came the removal of the need of snacks between meals ... less time worrying about food .... investigated the intermittent fasting realm ... this also reduced the time occupied by preparing and consuming food ... as it stands now I eat meats and a few select veg that are not too high in carbs ... you become sate faster with good nutritious food .... eating is not a big part of my life or budget anymore and waste is pretty much non existent .... yes bread no longer passes my lips ... at time of diagnose and currently 6'2" 164 ish pounds .. well enough of that, got a bit long winded ... thx for your reply ... make it an exceptional week ....

Ah glad its not just me with a pilot berth/nav station/outstanding job dumping ground. Personal I would bin the spirit level, boats move. Just eye it up to the rest of the boat, or even better in that case use the spirit level as a parallel to get your book case square to the rest of the boat. Even on land in most cases its your eye that needs to think its level, and most buildings aren't level so when your bit of pipe is perfectly level and everything around it is 15 degrees out your pipe looks wrong, uniform is better than right some times.
@TeuluTribe

Ground tackle. 105 yards of chain is good. How did you connect the 55 length to the new 50 yards? All clevis pins must be wired to prevent turn outs. How is the bitter end attached securely to the boat? Have you considered adding 300 feet of properly sized nylon anchor rode to your ground tackle? It can be spliced onto the bitter end of the chain rode to give you plenty of scope in a big blow. Long rope rode is why there are both a rope windlass and a chain gypsy on your deck mounted windlass for your ground tackle. 😊
@TeuluTribe
@TeuluTribe 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! We used one of those connecting split things you hammer down. The bitter end will be spliced around the d ring in the anchor locker 😊 Interesting to know about the rope windlass on our deck windlass- makes perfect sense!
@RoyalJoke248
@RoyalJoke248 2 жыл бұрын
I would suggest not splicing rope rode to the D ring. Secure with a well tied bowline. Hence the name of the knot... Bow line. Easier to remove the rope rode for washing and drying annually. Nylon is pretty impervious to much but should be fresh water washed, dried, and aired and inspected annually. It will have salt water wet dirty chain on and around it.

Looking at the frame at 13:48 I see two things. The top sheave shows the belt back above the top of the sheave. This is correct. All the drive comes on the sides of the belt. If the belt is riding on the bottom of the sheave either the sheave is too big, or the belt is the wrong size, or it is knackered. However, the bottom sheave shows a small gap between the hub and the sheave. If I am correct, this means the sheave was not installed correctly on the hub, i.e. is not straight and 90 degrees to the shaft and may be why the edge of your belt is shredded. It only takes a small irregularity or misalignment to ruin belts on the regular.

White socks in sandals is not nice for anyone. And white socks on doing engine works is not any better🫣 Make it a habit to simply change the impeller once a year and always change the gasket when doing so. As some also wrote here it’s a good idea to put a little dishwashing fluid on the impeller to make sure it goes in smoothly. I’ve doing a lot of work on my boat and it wasn’t completely finished when I went away in it for my summer break and it was just SO dirty and messy. 4 days into my vacation I finally got it cleaned up but still I’ve a ton of tools here there and everywhere. But today I got the curtains up👍🏼😂
