As others have said, you did really well coming alongside without your engine. I especially liked Becka's continuous positive feedback to Zack while you were manoeuvring. You appear to work very well with each other in stressful situations and that ought to give you confidence that you'll be able to cope with whatever gets thrown at you. It also sounds like you got a fantastic deal on your boat. On the cost of materials etc. You might like to source replacement parts and screws etc. ahead of time so you have time to find the best deals. Which you possibly won't have the opportunity to, when you're away from the UK. This won't take up much room in the boat and if you can take the financial hit now, will save you a lot. I'm about a year away from slipping the lines, so we may bump into each other in an anchorage. I wish you lots of laughs as you travel and I hope that everything you share, helps you build a fabulous relationship :)

Great episode, you learned a lot, remember what I said about you are the captain, you make the decisions, no one is going to come along and make the decisions for you, it looks like you are starting to get it! its all good to be nice and move for a race, but if you cant you cant, don't sweat it, get on a starboard tack and they will get out of your way. Also yes, 2 ways to stop a diesel, fuel or air, air is easier, faster and you don't need to bleed it after. Its great that you are learning these lessons at the start of your journey.

Teamwork is the way to make it work and you have shown that big time when solving problems. As for the cost. Live your dreams, education cost and life is an education. All the best to you and Zach, you are doing it right.

You two have an awesome outlook, and seem to find the positive in most situations so look at this as a good real world learning experience. You learned you can actually safely sail into a dock, even when slightly rushed and panicked. You will be that much more confident sailing into a marina or into and off of Anchor. I try to keep my engine on my small sailboat at idle as an emergency backup, and sail into and out of my anchorage or mooring as often as weather permits to practice. 40+ years of fixing all my own petrol and electric powered devices has also taught me Solenoids and Points of all shapes and sized are finicky and tend to fail at the most inopportune times. Especially in humid and salt spray air rich environments. You guys should make a jumper or at the very least keep an old plastic or rubber handled screwdriver made of a conductive metal like steel or stainless and keep it in the engine compartment. I keep a unit with a bunch of zip open and closed pouches in it so I can keep spare parts and emergency tools in attached on the inside panel of my engine compartment on my boat. That way you can easily jump the starter solenoid leads in an emergency to try and get the starter to engage.

Well done you guys, on saving and purchasing, you should be very proud of yourselves.

Good Nz morning guys. Finally caught up to the present. There is a cautionary quote that I heard many years ago, and you may have heard it before,....."a boat is a hole in the ocean, into which you pour money." Preventative maintenance is a great habit to get into, which can help reduce the "money pouring" by a certain amount. Simple things like going to your engine room, and tighten up your hose clamps. Yes, they will need it. Anything to do with the sails, masts, winches etc. I love your enthusiasm 😀 and excitement. I just love your channel. I'm glad I subbed to it. Now my mission, is that the right word, is to recommend to a couple of mates, who are still sailing, to check out your channel. Thanks for sharing and for taking the time to upload. Becka, you are going to love Bonaire! I've been on more trips to Bonaire than anyplace else. I don't know how to describe it other than to say everything seems so easy there and the diving is wonderful. Another island I think you will like is Dominica, the northernmost of the Windward Islands in the Caribbean. Very cool place with wonderful people and LOTS to do.

Don't worry we all get caught out with things breaking down on our boat just at the wrong time. Thing is to not panic and just take stock of the situation and do what you did by thinking on the fly. If you are considering going down towards the Antarctic like South Georgia you will definitely need a stronger hull. Stuart

Well done, tip would be to carry jump leads, jump straight to starter motor and hot wire the solenoid. That way you bypass the battery leads and switches, any of which might have failed. Leave the key in on position.

Hi Becka, Zach great vlog, really enjoyed it. If u don't mind me helping u, if that happens again find the lever that is attached to the solinoid on the engine, then simply use ur finger to push the lever back inwards and the engine will die. Very easy an safe. Tha cable looks similar to an accelerator cable. The alarm will sound as there's no oil pressure so simply turn key off. Anything with the word MARINE on it, in it around it means $$$ so I get 316 stainless steel stuff or anything really from normal hardware or what we call Bunnings 🤣 Good answer about the cat Becks, u need to just settle first and become one with the boat and the Ocean. Love u both 🇦🇺🌈🌞🌟

Concerning your table. Pull off your edge trim, sand starting at a 220 grit going up to a 3000-4000 grit. Then use a car buffer and buff to polish then replace your trim. Good as new. Easy Peasy. Be sure to wip off dust between each grit.

The next time someone asks you to move because they want to race, whilst we all do our best to not hinder them, just politely remind them they don’t have any greater right to you being there, even less so if you are having issues. We do take great care negotiating thru racing boats, but are less obliging to those with an attitude.

Well done with your sailing in to a berth, guys. Re the engine "shut off" not working, that's an older boat with what I assume to be an equally "older" engine so its very likely that it has a mechanical engine stop which effectively just stops the diesel fuel flow, and which is activated by either turning the key to the off position or by pressing a stop button and which means that the mechanical shut off lever is controlled by a solenoid. (A purely mechanical shut off would entail a wire attached to the fuel shut off lever and accessed from the helm, similarly to how a 'choke' worked in older cars. Afterall, it is just an old tractor engine!) So, to locate the solenoid adjacent to the engine, when you turn the key to the 'on' position it will make a noise as it moves the lever to open the fuel supply. You already know that it works as you successfully fired up the engine once the loose cable was discovered. If you don't hear a noise when you turn the key to the 'Off' position, and the fuel lever does not move, then you know that you have an electrical problem at the solenoid or the ignition switch. First thing to do is check your fuses as the loose battery connection might have caused a blown fuse, particularly during the 'key-turning ritual' that would have happened as you tried to react to your proximity to the race starting line and the convergence of sail boats, though as the lever moved to open the fuel supply it is half-way working so unlikely to be a fuse. Check it anyway as you are in the process of elimination and you are not likely entirely savvy with the engine electronics. Experienced 'sparkies' usually go straight to the problem, whereas us novices have to go through the process. C'est la vie! If the fuses are OK, then its time to get the multimeter out and check the earth wires for both the ignition and the solenoid though if the key starts the engine it should stop it too, unless the live wire to the stop position is compromised. Wherever the fault, it is likely only a minor one of a loose wire and finding it is a process of elimination along the engine stop circuit. It's often a bit like "holding your mouth right" have one of you wiggle the wire whilst the other turns the key to the off position is one way to test for a loose connection. I had a similar 'head scratcher' in my L/R Defender until I started the process of elimination. Good luck, gang!

Good on you for buying the boat you could afford, and not succumb to "renting money". There are many cost advantages to not exceeding 12 metres too! In the US Insurance companies dictate where the vessel must be for coverage due to seasonal weather conditions. Finance companies require insurance of their collateral. I have seen many sailors depart on passages in poor conditions, just to be above a prescribed line by a prescribed date. I am always astounded by complete strangers asking what I paid for my boat ('84 Pearson 385). Besides it not being anyone's business, with older boats condition and equipment dictates price. I usually respond "the current average value for a vessel like this is between $X and $XXXX". Your boat can take you anywhere a larger boat can, for far less cost, you get the same view. I look forward to seeing you in Bonaire one day!

Bonaire is no place for a cruising boat. it is set up for the dive industry. there is no anchoring in Bonaire. you must use a mooring ball, which are not that numerous. further, the dive operators have them staked out and therefore make it hard to find an open one. the one marina is small, and adjacent to a highway which often has traffic in the dirt shoulder which in turn blows into the marina. I had to wash down my boat two or three times a week to keep it presentable . there is a decent marine store and several good restaurants. but because it's a major tourist destination the prices are high. it is not uncommon to have two cruise ships in port a day; sometimes three. I've been to almost all the islands in the Caribbean and put Bonaire at or near the bottom of the list of places I would revisit.

Just a side comment, like to restore your teak decks? Spray with white vinegar and scrub with the grain with coarse brush, hose off, repeat and finish with not so coarse brush. Do a section at a time. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

if it took 30 minutes to kill the engine when removing fuel, try cutting off the fuel after the filter, (or from the fuel pump) the closer to the injector lines, the quicker the stop will be

You have a stop selenoid at the engine that shuts off the fuel to the engine that you can manually activate. Best to learn where on the engine that is and next time kill the engine using the shut-off selenoid rather than wait for complete fuel starvation and eliminate having to prime it all over again. Also, it is immediate not 30 minutes later.

I sailed out 27’ Hunter into our marina, single handed, which included three 90 degree turns, stopped in front of our slip and pulled the boat in manually. Of course I had the engine on just in case but didn’t need it. Someone yelled, “You can’t do that.” And I yelled back, “I just did.”

How much money do you spend in a month in the boat? Do you have any income now, or have you saved enough to buy a boat, and then have some left to live of of when you travel?

You were very sensible not to take a loan. I know interest rates are low but it still needs to be paid. A decision never to take a load and to wait until you have saved enough to pay cash pays off. Everything we own is paid for including the car, and the house was bought for cash, much to our surprise when we added up the money we had in various accounts.
