A story about the first time I 'won' a streetfight by realising that the other guy - an older, shabbily dressed, homeless man - was almost certainly mentally ill.
A good streetfight is one that you walk away from or de-escalate, because even if you KO the other guy you could still lose (as I discussed in detail in this article here: selfdefensetutorials.com/deat...)
Be compassionate and be strategic my friends,
Stephan

A thing I think about (that's kinda easier to reconcile with the ego): I don't wanna fight with anybody. I have literally no business engaging in an activity that can get me killed/crippled/imprisoned. They want me to fight them, that's why the provocation happens. How weak mentally would I be to allow some drunk random on the street to manipulate me into doing something so stupid? It's like getting mind-controlled into a possible suicide by a bum.

Very mature and realistic advise Stephen. I will add to never underestimate anyone, not a street person, not an old lady, not a kid. Although it is best to avoid a conflict, we all know to walk away but never take your eyes off of anyone until you are long gone. And on your way to safety you can be proud of "winning by losing (by not engaging in the first place)"

Reminds me of a somewhat similar episode when I was around 19yo and just started doing MA. Was with my gf when we saw a man flat on the ground midday. We got him up, he was drunk. Then he got the impression that we want to mug him and made a step towards me with his hand raised in a menacing way and I just posted my hand against his chest to stop him. He got unbalanced and was tilting backwards. In that split second I imagined him falling and smashing his head on the pavement, so my reflex was to grab his collar to stabilize him. He was still bad mouthing us, I barked a bit back at him and we just left him holding on to the fence that was next to us. Pretty good outcome for all parties!

This is very true and a good perspective to avoid physical escelation whenever possible, which is the highest level of self defense whenever possible. Just to add to the discussion, I would like to note that my wife has worked as long as I know her with people with mental illness, my mom has been mentally ill on and off all of my life, in fact my wife used to work for her but that's a digression... anyways, in some cases with mentally lll people, some of the normal clues which might indicate a potential physical altercation go out the window, as depending on the mental illness, sometimes they can switch in an instant, which can make it hard to avoid and de-escelate.... just another reason to also train the combative aspects of self defense, although communication skills combined with having compassion and not being guided by one's ego are extremely underrated aspects of self defense. I also like about this video that it's not always just about protecting yourself, sometimes it's about protecting the potential attacker as well, if it's a kid, someone physically inferior, or just someone you know is unstable and about to ruin their life if you let the situation escelate.

Dude I thought you were going to explain how you avoided a fight with a guy in a tuxedo called Tattoo. However story does ring true there was a local homeless aggresive drunk at a village when I was in my 20s and he tried something similar on some a group of teenagers. The killed him and 2 served 5 years for manslaughter.

@@SelfDefenseTutorials This was a case of police, government and family not stepping in and finally he pushed his luck too far. Nobody wins in this scenario. The local townsfolk obviously wanted him off the streets as he harassed people for years but nobody did anything.

Something similar happened to me, but the guy said he was going to kill me and rape my dog. Do what you want to me, but don't mess with my dog. I was physically shaking I was so upset, but I knew there had to be something wrong with him so I walked away. I still get upset thinking about it, but you're exactly right.

Another youtuber talked about a homeless guy trying to break into his car. To avoid touching him, he threw a leg kick, and the homeless man limped away. (That youtuber was already the size of a heavyweight when he was 16, it doesn't work like that for everyone)

I was homeless fr 7 years, and I'd have probably taught u a lesson if you tried to knock me out......never underestimate a homeless man.....the streets make you tough.....and u feel as though you have nothing to lose.......I found 1in 10 people "normal" living people so dissatisfied with their lives, they all seem pretty much mentally messed up.......I found a life of creative freedom on the streets outside of the normal 9-5 living in box life working like a slave for someone probably far less intelligent they are. Is that what people are born for.....The unconscious invisible life of The Matrix?

Never street fight. The winner goes to jail and the loser goes to the hospital or the morgue. Also, keep this in mind. If you fight a stranger, its most likely their blood will end up on or in you. HIV, HepC and anything else in their blood could be your death sentence as well. Totally not worth it. Best thing is to avoid places where fights are likely to happen, streets at night, bars with drunken idiots, etc...

I'm usually a pretty chill dude but I've been in a ridiculous number of street fights and a few prison fights, which i didnt start, because of my pride issues. The way i was raised, violence was very prevalent and sometimes necessary so backing down or walking away was never an option i would even consider. Fighting has always been like 2nd nature but over the last year or so I've been really working on breaking that habit but its so hard to do when that fighting spirit is pdobably one of the main reasons im even still alive, u know?

Charlie Bronson UKs most dangerous prisoner (not now, he's a lovely guy) said it best: There's no secret to being hard or tough, you just get as strong and as fit as your own body can be.....that's it, and next time anyone messes with you, unleash everything you've got....chances are if you've put the work in, you'll be far stronger and fitter than they are, and they won't know what hit 'em! Unleash hell!.😎
@creativitycell
@creativitycell 3 жыл бұрын
I've found the stronger n fitter I become, the less street or pub fights I've got into over the years.....they can just just the steely confidence in my eyes, and generally numb nuts calm down and decide to walk away. But it's also a nice feeling to know that when sum dumb ass starts kicking off or shouting the place down....you can just step up....at a safe non-provoking distance, talk to sum fella in the edge of crazy exploding violence, and talk them down to normality.......that takes real strength and confidence......you have to put the work in for that.

The legal aspect is why I don't like boxing or stryking martial arts, if you hit a guy in the face , you got in trouble with the law. Instead I prefer judo throw the guy and contol the fall.

what also helps avoid unnecessary fights is a gun on your person. Because with it comes heavy legal responsibility. Also because you don't even start feeling threatened, so there's no unwanted natural response.
