I honestly enjoy these tinkering videos of yours. You take things slow and explain well too. I don't even own a Himalayan yet but I've ordered mine and will be driving it here to Finland some time in the next spring so your videos are very good tutorials since you seem to be doing just the stuff I want on mine too.

You don't know how good it is to hear that. I know they are longer than some people like, but in my opinion, for an install or tutorial video, if you don't show the steps then you're just leaving people scratching their heads and asking questions. I prefer to make the video count and take my time. You'll have to share an update on the Himalayan of yours once you get it and get a good adventure underway!

@@aliendude4064 They call the color for the white Himalayan "Snow White". The matte black is called "Granite". The newer 2020 Himalayans have more color options, like Rock Red and Lake Blue. There is also a silverish matte color but I'm not sure what they officially call it. For the Rock Red, only the front half of the tank is a glossy red and the back half is gloss black. With the Lake Blue, the front half is blue and the back half is white. The silver one is all silver except for the knee pad locations are darker.

I can happily report that the cans and brackets did really well during my recent 2,000 mile trip. I was able to play around with no worry of fuel, and if I came across someone else with fuel issue, I would have been able to save the day. 😃👍 Also the added weight up front really helped with the handling after putting all my luggage on the rear. There must be a balance. Thanks José!

Hi Justin - I know it's been a minute since this video was made. My thought is - why not just remove the gas tank to ease the install? I have the parts and am waiting for the 300 mile service which I'll do it myself When I pull the tank to do the valve adjustment, I'll tackle the can mount attachment. I'll be sure to chase the threads - I'd rather use blue locktite than putting oil on the threads to ease the install. Thanks for sharing your install experience. Al

Another great video. Makes a nice change to see if anyone else has had problems fitting accessories to the Himmie. The reason you may have had problems with the bolt snapped tightening up is probably due to factory paint in the threads. Read of this problem on a RE forum. The poster said he had to tap the threads first to clean them. It's fantastic that we may get reports of your up and coming trip.
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lain De Biker! You may be right about a bit of paint. There was also the issue that the holes in the bracket were so tight (too small actually) that the bolts had no room for play. So I think the holes were not perfectly lined up with the nuts. Close... but not close enough given the tight holes. If I pull them off I may check for residual paint and run a tap through. Thanks!

Yep, another helpful one for me. I think I'm going to design a slightly different bracket myself after seeing your issues. Something that will overlap the lower bar and then use the 4 bolt holes. I'm planning to do the locking rotopax mounts too. People here are always ripping off loose gas cans and batteries, etc. Thanks for sharing.
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 5 жыл бұрын
Glad this was useful! I think somehow using the lower bar for added support is an EXCELLENT idea! My original design to cut my own bracket called for bolting into the crossmember/emblem like this bracket, but then having an extension spanning down and resting on the lower bar as well, so the lower bar holds some of the load. To be honest, I was worried the welds on the crossmember would give. After hundreds of bumpy miles I can attest that the crossmember isn't going anywhere. Itchy Boots already proved that I guess... not that everyone has the exact same weld quality. Bummer you have to worry about theft. I would too around town, but not out in the sticks. Bears keep the thieves away! 🐻 😃

Technically the square holes on the plate are for "coach bolts" (in the UK), normally plain dome-head bolts that are pulled through with a square section on the shaft below the bolt head engaging with the square hole on the plate. The main use is to present a clean look, but more practically to stop people unbolting your kit from the outside, as usually all the fastening nuts holding it on would be inaccessible on the inside of the vehicle. Keep having fun, I enjoy your vids. PS HA I just saw your footnote, you'd already worked that out.

Thanks Justin-another great instructional video. Doubt I will ever need to fit these as most of my riding is in Europe and there are fuel stations everywhere, plus a 200 mile plus tank range means I should not get caught out. When I had some fittings for my KTM that need drilling, I marked all the pieces up and took them to a local engineering company, who drilled and debuted the holes accurately for me. Only cost a few pounds-much less than replacing two or three drill bits. Enjoy your trip.

That’s a LOT OF CAN you have on your bike. I would have thought a smaller set, (like a 1 gallon) would be better as far as appearance goes. You’re going to be the designated tanker in a group ride. I am following Noraly (aka Itchy Boots) and have been following her adventures since she started in India on her original Royal Enfield. While I am not a huge fan of carrying spare fuel, I can see the necessity especially in Alaska and in other remote parts of the world. If you decide to downsize your fuel carrying capacity please mention it in a post. My plans are well in the making for my ride to Prudhoe Bay this June on my V-Strom 1000. Just to let you know that if you are using stainless steel bolts and use nylock nuts you have to lubricate the bolts because if you don't a chemical reaction happens that kind of welds the nut in place before you can get it tight. Any reason you didn't mount the jerries to the rear of your panniers? I would think if you dropped the bike the jerries are going to be hammered. Love to hear your thoughts
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 3 жыл бұрын
Sure thing. Regarding the cans getting hammered, I'd prefer they take some knocks than my cargo rack and tank. The Rotopax cans are thick, can take some abuse. But the main reason they are up front instead of on the rear boils down to weight distribution and handling. If I put them on the back, it'll make the rear squat more, take load off the front, and potentially set me up for bad handling or wobbling at higher speeds. Additionally I didn't want excessive weight causing any cracks in the subframe or the pannier racks. I already had/have other gear and weight to put back there. Those were my main thoughts. The bike did handle well during my 2000-mile trip to the Arctic and back.

I expect to get this question more than once, and it's a good one. I'll just make it simple and draw up a list of Pros for having these cans. 1. On the recent Prudhoe Bay trip there are two section with 240-260 miles between fuel stations, which means you MUST have spare fuel. If you intend to play around at all, take side roads or backtrack as I did, you must have lots of it. So it depends on the plan. I wanted no limits and no worries. 2. If you plan to ride with bikes that have larger fuel tanks, it's nice to have their same quantity of fuel and not force them to make special plans for you to fill up more often. 3. My experience was that once the Himalayan pannier racks and boxes were installed, the handling of the bike at high speed, and the chance of a wobble, was alarming. Weighting the front end to balance out forces with the rear made a huge improvement, as did tightening up the rear shock pre-load. A must! Those are the biggest issues. Rotopax does make a 3.8L jerry can. It's sort of tall and skinny, but would be perfect for overall function over form. Plus you'd end up with extra space on the cargo rack for something else like a tool pouch.

Just one observation does the three screws and washers fixing on the fuel can mounting plate come into contact with the fuel can when you mount it, so that any vibration when mobile will eventually wear a hole into the side of the fuel can, some thing you may want to look into just in case it does.

That would be a strong case for using the Rotopax brand. More durable than the other stuff out there. I suppose you are correct there would be an enhanced risk if you crashed and punctured the cans. For the most part it's not much different than other dual-sport bikes and dirtbikes with plastic fuel tanks.

If you have the pannier rack installed, the rear mount for the turn signals is a great place for a better brake light. I'm considering one of the brake lights that flashes while braking. Perhaps that is the same sort of brake light you are referring to. Good idea! 👍

On the Prudhoe trip I could do between 240-260 miles or so before running out of fuel. Depended on how fast I was riding of course. With the cans... tack on another 200-228 miles. Could get a total of 488 miles if you kept the speed down around 45-50mph. Sorry none of that is metric!

This is good to hear. Well, not GOOD, but nice that someone is backing me up on this. As much as I can make a case for having close tolerances, thus a tightly fitted bracket, there's no reason you should have to thread your bolts through a hole that has no threads. Thanks for the info Silk!

just had a look at the enfield accessoires site, and thou I like their products, and I am happy that there are such little brands, I still think that their products are way overpriced. @@FloPayer I don't know. My guess is that it has to do with it being a small company and there's not a huge demand for this product. So to recover their time and expenses it's a little bit more costly. Maybe over the next couple of years when more and more people have this motorcycle the accessories like this will come down in cost. Plus they probably assume their customers are willing or able to spend a little more. 🤔

Good show today. Thanks for the tutorial. I don't know why, but it always seems like every time I go to modify something there's always a nasty little turn in the road that could not be foreseen. It's always something! 😆 I ended up doing the North Slope trip with these cans in Silver. Glad I did it. Just too much read. Black did work out well for Noraly. Like her, my paint started to chip. Everything was good until a guy in front of me launched a rock. Hit the right can and there went the first big flake of paint. Oh well! Bound to happen sooner or later. One more install video (Heated Grips) then on to Prudhoe Bay! Coming soon! Rubber side down, will do! Thanks Vaughn!

I like the silver look. Can they be painted?
@KARMAkazeMoto
@KARMAkazeMoto 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And yes, I painted them. However, you really have to put good effort into doing it well. My effort was so-so, and I did get some big chips. What needs to happen is: 1. Sandblast the cans to get the surface clean yet rough. Using fine sandpaper is better than nothing, but it's not nearly as good as blasting. 2. Use a, All-Purpose or For-Plastic primer with multiple coats. 3. Then spray many fine coats of flexible/plastic paint. I used silver paint intended for car rims and it was too brittle. Looked good, but cracks when flexed too much. And expect that you're going to end up seeing some red eventually from scratches or something, but it's still better than giant solid red cans. Check local laws. Some places require fuel cans to remain red.
