I remember that, i was on shore patrol. We had to standby the dockyard entrance and tell the lads to straight back on board as they turned up. The thing that stuck in my mind was us 3 chefs with our armbands and wooden batons, on one side of the road and 30 to 50 angry locals on the other side. All we new was that the PTI had been shot in a bar, and when the lads turned up to tell them nothing and instruct them to get back onboard, especially the Royal Marines. All three of us agreed, if it kicked off, we were legging it back to the ship as fast as our legs could carry us. I believe later on the deployment one of the Royal Marines fell over board on a Inflatable Dinghy and the propeller nearly took his whole arm off.

I turned up in Grenada in 1985, a little while after the American invasion there. I'd sailed as crew on a yacht from South Africa. There was a bit of hostility, South Africa was still under aparthheid rule.

I imagine there was drink involved. You sailors do have a reputation to maintain. Myself, I was in the air force. RCAF. We were much better behaved.
