Haohmaru and Ukyo share a palette-swapped version of the same stage because of the historical figures they were based oh, Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro. The two rivals were known for having a famous duel on a beach. However, the duel was supposed to take place in the morning but Musashi (either from oversleeping, strategy or disrespect depending on who's telling the story) arrived late in the day, leaving Kojiro waiting and impatient. Hence why they are both there at different times of day, though I always felt the two should've been reversed with Haohmaru having the night stage.

The reason why Haohmaru and Ukyo share a stage is because they are expies of Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro. Ganryu Island was the site of their duel.

I used go play it at the arcades and movie theaters and later owned it for the SNES. I'd rather play the arcade version over the inferior 16 bit ports

Note on the Sega CD. Although it did have an ASIC that could do scaling, in practice it also meant lowering the framerate to facilitate it's use. A lot of reasons for that like memory latency/filtrate, etc. But the lower framerate was a big drawback.

My first arcade game. Place I hung out at during summer break had two arcade machines: SamSho and golf. I barely ever got to play and I never got past the second fighter. lol But I saw an older kid beat it with Tam Tam once. I remember the first time I ever saw SamSho. I saw a cabinet somewhere like a grocery store when I was less than ten and was absolutely blown away. I was a huge Street Fighter 2 fan and for some reason SamSho just instantly appealed to me. I rented the hell out of the Super NES port of it. Also Earthquake is actually a Texan ninja. Ninjas are actually a type of character in SamSho in the sense that they typically aren't as as worse off when they lose their weapon and typically have more special moves they can still use when their weapon is lost.

Amakusa is based on Amakusa Shiro, a historical figure of the Edo era. He was the leader of an uprising of Japanese Roman Catholics against the Shogunate (hence his reference to "my religion" in the game). The uprising failed, he was killed and his head was mounted on a pike as a warning to all Christians in Japan. For some reason, Samurai-themed anime, manga and games all love to use him as inspiration for big bads. Obviously he's in SamSho as a weird sorcerer, but he's also shown up in a lot of forgettable OVAs that tried to cash in on Ninja Scroll's success, and there's a version of him as the final villain in Rurouni Kenshin, even though that series is set in the Meiji era. I'm not sure where the fixation stems from; it's kind of like if we just had a bunch of Westerns that featured Robert E. Lee as the main villain.

That classic ending is the reason I'm still wondering why hasn't Gen-An appeared in anything recent yet? Now would be the best time! Imagine a duel reveal for Gen-An for BOTH SamSho 2019 & KOFXV? Two different styles that fit their respective games would be sick... and it would SHATTER All Expectations!! 🧀🙄 Me, my brother and bf LOVED playing SamSho 1 against each other. Especially, when my bf got it on Genesis. It's a GREAT playing port with larger sprites - but no Earthquake really sucked tho and made no sense! We really loved the story and characters too! This game is a bona-fide classic that often gets eclipsed by the amazing sequels! I'd love to see you tackle them!

I agree completely about the items in fighting games. Games like gem fighter and power stone do that so well, I wish it were more common. And esports can disable them in options (like the smash community does) if they don't like it.

The difference between "a-ma-KU-sa" and "amaksa" is probably just down to language differences: the first one stresses the "ku" syllable, while the second is closer to how a Japanese speaker would say it (no stress on any particular syllable, and the "u" sound kinda blends together with the "sa").

Some context into Amazuka Shiro Tokisada if you're curious: In Samurai Shodown, Amakuza Shiro Tokisada was ressurected by making a deal with the devil (the dark guy, he mentions in a cutscene) and Amakuza channels Satan's power in the sphere as well as summon him in the last stage. He was a real historical figure, converted into Christianism and led a rebellion (The OVA Ninja Ressurection sorta went nuts with it and he was also shown in Samurai X). Amakuza was said to be extremely fair (of looks) and was considerably young at the time, I believe it was documented that he was 16 when he led the rebellion. And being beautiful in japan means you look like a woman because there is no such thing as "male beauty" in their culture (Beauty is an exclusively feminine trait there). His rebellion (along with a previous Buddhist rebellion) has cemented the belief in Japan that religions and cults are extremely dangerous and started hardcore persecution by the government of all religions that weren't Shinto or Buddhist (some tolerance was given), but Christianism was seen as a hardcore evil by the Ruling Emperor of the time. When the rebellion was defeated, the emperor kept Amakuza's head in a pike in the port of Edo as a warning to christians. The government only ever started to loosen things up when Japan was forced to open up to the world (by American cannons pointed straight at Edo, no less).

Samurai Shodown is the SNK fighting game series I've never really managed to master. I absolutely love the design/tone of these joints, but always feel like I'm completely winging it, like I still don't really understand a big chunk of the fundamentals of the game. Now I think about it, I've only ever really played the original Neo Geo versions on emulators; are there any versions with training modes? I've got a 360 version installed on my Series X right now that I'm pretty certain doesn't even have a move list.
