A Short King Walk - Nigel Short vs Jan Timman 1991

One of the most famous king walk games in chess came from the encounter between Nigel Short and Jan Timman in 1991. How would Short reply when Timman opts for the atypical Alekhine's Defense? Could an enemy queen scare the king off his path? What conditions would be necessary for the king walk to be a success during an atypical phase of the game?

One thing I adore about this channel is how the language personifies the tactics. Some channels rattle off the mechanics and options as a string of rote steps, but here you get the feeling that the pieces are working as a team, executing a plan and warding off an army. Which they are. They always are. But the narration makes it feel human and accessible without being patronising or infantile. I can follow this without questioning "but why is Qh4 a bad move?". The game tells a story, and I wish outsiders better saw this side of chess. Another cracking video: well done!

ChessNetwork I echo that sentiment - as an outsider it is almost the entire reason I'm here. Your videos have really shown that there's more to chess than abstract strategy. That combined with your presentation style have left me watching more and more without having played a game in perhaps a decade, and the wish to play slowly building. In the end I've started watching your beginner to master series, and played four games against Stockfish 1. I've got a long way to go, but I've got one win with Undo, and one win without.

I laugh everytime i hear him say "that pawn is poison" because i know very well ive eaten my fare share of them😂. Still, the story telling of every chess game makes it not only easy to follow for beginners like me, but it super satisfying to listen to.

I wish you would spend more time on the Qc6 move, I thought it was the big mistake of the game and it is. White is attacking and queen on C6 was useless during the whole game. Qf8 is suggested by the engine and looks logical, defending the dark squares around the king

14:36 since the black rook on f7 can take out the queen he can leave one rook for defender on the side acting as killers for the pawns he can go offensive with a queen and a rook so the knight to c8 was the best possible move which would result in both having one pawn and a king left so stalemate

At 11:36 I saw the move Queen E7. One, you're offering an exchange, and two, you're defending H4. White Queen moves, The attack is over. Any other piece moves, The Queens are exchanged. If Knight moves to a dummy square, Free Queen. I see this as the best option. I'm up for civil arguments if you're questioning my move.

You move the Knight at 16:09 then 31.... Qxg2++. At 16:44 you could move the Knight because Black has moved his Bishop. In order to move the Knight but avoid a mate, you have to protect g2 or move your King away. Maybe that's how he came up with the idea of moving the King :).

At 17:35 couldn't the black queen take on a4, with the aim of then taking on c2 to eventually try to force a queen exchange on f5? (Or after Rd2, take a different route.) Black would have time for this while the white king walks. White would be the favourite, but at least it's an attempt at defending for black.
