Beating the Benoni Defense in 23 moves | Knaak vs Anastasian 1988

Plenty of games in the Benoni Defense never quite reach the endgame phase because of its sharp middle game play. Featured here is one of them. This game, played in 1988, was held in Yerevan, Armenia between German Grandmaster Rainer Knaak, and Armenian Grandmaster Ashot Anastasian. This model game for white against the Benoni Defense does well not only to highlight a thematic middle game pawn thrust, but also to demonstrate how this very pawn thrust permits a wonderful improvement of the queen knight. Can you spot the game's final tactical blow? It's exactly what Bobby Fischer did to Pal Benko at the 1963 United States Chess Championship!

Maybe your best instructional video so far. Would love to see this kinda breakdown for so many openings. I am really struggling with forming a coherent plan in the mid game and this was a perfect example of identifying the important strategic goals for the white position and execution. This video explained it perfectly. Thanks!

I would like to point out that black on move 11 had, instead of a6?! which invites a5 ideas, the strong move Na6!. This looks weird, returning to the square it just came from, but you'll notice that black has provoked a4 from white and now can go to b4 to harass the bishop. If black did this before he would be kicked out by a3.Once the bishop has to leave d3, then a6-b5 will be much easier to achieve without 3 pieces locking it down.

7:06 it seems that black's position is highly preferable. The knight on e5 is just way too strong after it comes to c3 and white's dark square control is really just nonexistent. The g7 bishop is probably going to pick off the b2-pawn, after which black has 2 connected passers on the queenside. The other bishop is going to b7 (after b4 so pawn doesn't hang) where it is going to create issues on g2 along with black's knights. The f8-knight could go to d7 or e6, both are reasonable. Lastly that b8 rook is going to easily pick off the overextended d6-pawn

ex59neo53 Bxa6 is not considered to be the best of moves in those kind of structures. First of all, you're giving up the Bishop pair too early and black has the b file to work with ...

Why not Qd3? (Instead of the weird Rf6) this is simpler and I don’t see how block this move. The pawn on the f rank can’t move fast enough for block the queen because of the white rook.
