I'm with Eric when he said there is nothing wrong in liking both Your Name and A Silent Voice. People have this dumb competition between the two movies because they came out around the same time. At the end of the day, these two movies have brought so much to the Anime community with amazing filmmaking and people should appreciate that.

Sad fact; Kyoto Animation, the studio that made this movie, were victims of an an arson attack that killed 33 employees last year. It was a domestic terrorist attack that really shook both the anime industry and the Japanese public in general. It's especially saddening because KyoAni actually treated their employees well and took care of them, as opposed to the toxic overworking culture that a lot of other companies in Japan partake in.

The way this movie handles social anxiety is just too good.

as someone with social anxiety, this movie depicted it so well,, just the pov camera looking down and not meeting the eyes, not seeing people's faces etc.. and at the end when all those crosses fell from the people's faces and the music soared and became alive again, i cried for an hour.. truly beautiful..

In the sub Shoko said "Suki(I like you)" but Shoya thought she said "Tsuki(The Moon)"

The reason she only has one hearing aid is because he permanently damaged her other ear as a child. This is one of the best movies that helps to showcase the impact of bullying on both the victim and the aggressor, and the long lasting impact. On a side note there's an even longer series of this in a Manga format. And this entire thing is based initially on a one shot that was beautifully well done.

An interesting fact about the Japanese version, Shoya didn't call Shoko by her first name at all in the whole movie until the balcony scene. An important cultural detail I don't think translates well into English. Either way, it still did well in both translations

The scene when shouko’s mom and sister bow to Shouya’s mom in the hospital makes me sob every time I watch. Such a great film.

To educate people here; the woman who voiced Shoko in the English dub is actually a deaf actress that they specifically sought out for the role. I'll always tell people to watch both sub and dub of this movie for that reason alone, they're both just such great versions.

The Xs over people's faces are signs for social anxiety. No one is available for socialization/bonding from the character's point of view.

I've never felt more understood by a piece of media than I was by this film when it was released. It's a meticulously-crafted thesis on the plight of those who struggle to communicate with others, whether the cause be physical disability or social anxiety. I hold it responsible for showing me how to live again, at a time when I felt abandoned and worthless. A literal 11/10 in my book: it gets a special mention removed from the rest when people ask me about my favourite movies or the best anime I've ever seen, because if it weren't for this film, I wouldn't be sitting with anyone, being asked what the best anime I've ever seen was. I have a deeply personal relationship with this movie and I cannot be more grateful to Yoshitoki Oima (the original manga artist), Naoka Yamada (the director who creatively led this adaptation), Kazuya Takao (director of photography), Kensuke Ushio (the mastermind behind this film's uncomfortably intimate score), Yota Tsuruoka (sound director), Jonathan Clements (who organised and hosted the Scotland Loves Anime showing of this film where I first viewed it), the wonderful, talented staff at Kyoto Animation, and anyone and everyone who helped create this film and bring its message of friendship, understanding and togetherness to me. These people helped me live.

A Silent Voice focuses a lot on the everyday life problems that teenagers have. Each character portrays and has a different problem. But it mostly portrays social anxiety and bullying, just like in the beginning the bully was then the one who got bullied.

This movie made me cry as a kid, I'm partially deaf and have anxiety so it hit close to home, it was the first movie I saw that had someone who was deaf too.

For me personally, I disliked Miki more then Naoka because even though she wad a bitch and was clearly in the wrong, at least Naoka was straight up with her feelings about Shouko and was mean directly and I can somewhat understand her feelings and reasoning even if their mean.... Miki I dislike because she never admitted that she was part of the bullying and even that the end she never apologizes about anything and continues to deny any responibility...... Those are my feelings about the characters.....

In japan, there's a phrase 'Tsuki ga kirei desu ne?" which translates to "The moon is beautiful tonight right?" . Which is a poetic way to say "I love you" or at least the subtle way to say it because "Tsuki = Moon" sounds almost the same as "Suki = like, love".

A quote I saw on a comment section about this movie's ending: "Apologizing is hard. Forgiving is harder. Forgiving yourself is near impossible." And think that quote, in many ways, embodies this movie very well.

This is one of the better pieces of media that handles the redemption of a bully really well imo. Some bullies can be so needlessly and excessively cruel that even years later it's hard to see them in a positive light, I was very impressed with how well this movie was able to make you feel for Shoya even after seeing how mean he was as a kid.

Shoko is best girl forever and ever.

This movie hits SO MUCH harder for me since I am deaf myself and have had some dark thoughts over there years for feeling like an alien. Now I do have people around me to keep me up and i continue to be strong

A silent voice: 1. School system issues and bullying. 2. How a disability can negatively affect one's self esteem, which pushes that person even further away from people around them. 3. Sensational music and production, this movie is a masterpiece: pictures and music. 4. Mental Illness Narrative: Some of the typical manifestations of major depressive disorder are hopelessness, guilt, and suicidal thoughts. In the first volume, we see high school-aged Ishida completely resigned to the fact he will never have friends again. He detaches himself from everyone who might even want to get close to him, which is showcased by his interactions with fellow students who are now simply faces with “X’s” scrawled over them.

To me the "X"s represent his connection to others. Isolating yourself by severing connections is one of most common behaviors people with depression have. He doesn't trust anymore, he is afraid of putting himself out there. He also looks down a lot and avoids eye contact because that is a very intimate thing to do. When you are talking to someone and you are looking at each other, it shows that you are paying attention and that you care what the other person is saying, there is a connection. He doesn't want that, but some times people manage to sneak in to his heart. At the end of the movie he is actively trying to connect to the world, thats why the Xs fall as well as the music swells up. Again, this is how I saw it and how it felt. I deal with depression and this is the first movie that I felt expressed exactly how it feels to deal with depression and low self worth.

As someone who read the manga, Ueno is a very interesting character but the movie cut out pretty much all of her side of the story. It doesn't make what she did any better but it makes you at least understand where her feelings are coming from. And her character development by the end is great.

Your name is fucking awesome, its entertaining, pulls at heartstrings and is an incredible feat of animation. Silent Voice is something entirely different, and whatever it is, I will carry it in my heart till the day I die. Edit - I love that Aaron's struggle with animated metaphors continues.

If I remember correctly, the *"X's"* on ppl's faces is his way of self-exiling, a self-isolation from developing connections with ppl, because he felt he didn't deserve it. And bit by bit, as ppl showed hard enough to build/show they wanted a connection with him, if they were succesful, he felt 'safe' and would accept them, then start to get to know them. But the moment anything turned sour, it'd be like a trigger reminding him of his self hate & depression which would lead him back to pushing them away and self-isolating Basically it's a movie about self-acceptance, forgiveness *(self-forgiveness & for others) , and that nobody being perfect physically or internally, so it's imporatant to accept one another building positive relationships and special bonds/friendships.

English dub of this film is incredible. Lexi Marman is deaf and the perfect choice to play Shouko

as someone who was a bully when i was young and have social anxiety now, this movie triggered me in a lot of ways. It reminded me of my shameful past that i tried to move on from and made me relate in a lot of ways from the social anxiety perspective. It was... really hard for me to finish this movie because i kept being reminded of my stupidity and dumbassery when I was a kid, made me wish I could turn back time and stop myself from being such a douche. Needless to say, as much as I would like to rewatch this movie I'm too much of a coward to be reminded of my old self again.

They should watch "Weathering With You" next!

53:10 Moon is pronounced TSUKI and Like is pronounced SUKI, so Rick brought up a pretty good point about that. It's definitely a translation thing. I also love Rick bringing up The Missing; I know that game wrecked him to bits. I was just thinking that he might be reminded of it from watching this movie.

Man, so I cried a LOT during this movie because of how much I related to Shoyo. I was astonished by how well the Xs on the faces seemed to work on expressing how people can make you so afraid. Eventually, you just give up trying to get to know people because not only does it hurt to make eye contact with everyone you also you feel that they hate you. Eventually you just stop trying to view them as people. It's easier to block out their existence and live in solitude. I have friends now, and I'm not as alone but bad days still happen- just not as often.

Fun fact about Shoko’s confession. While he did misunderstand it, it is a reference to Natsume Soseki, the most acclaimed novelist in Japan who once taught his student that the English translation of ‘I love you’ is ‘The moon is beautiful.’ So in a way, Shoya did answer Shoko back 😄

For the voice actor dub English, she was deaf.

Damn even just watching that 20 min cut of the movie still made me feel emotional, that's how you know it's beyond being just a good movie.

The koi fish going up stream against the current symbolizes the struggle or fighting of obstacles. I love that little part. Near the end, I didnt understand why some of the "friends" didn't have their reflection shown on the floor.

I understand that many of you may hate Ueno and that is fine but it seems most have forgotten In grade school the first person to reach out to Nishimiya when she arrives was Ueno, this is made abundantly clear where she asks for Nishimiya’s notebook while everyone else was still shocked that she was deaf. During lessons, Nishimiya would ask what the teacher says because the Teacher never changed the way he taught to account for her disability, so Ueno took it upon herself to explain to Nishimiya what he was saying causing her to miss parts of the lessons as well. As time goes on, the Nishimiya situation is constantly complained about amongst her peers because sacrifices have to be made in order to compensate for her and integrate her into their school life, Ueno attempts to get this through to Nishimiya in her notebook when they are practicing choir (by saying just mouth the words) but they lose the choir competition as a result because it just doesn’t sound as good anymore, and Nishimiya can only apologize. Please don’t forget these are kids, they lack the maturity and reasoning of someone of our age, so instead of seeing Nishimiya as someone who needs additional help, they see her as a burden that’s costing them everything. The last straw for Ueno was being told that she’d have to learn sign language to better communicate with Nishimiya, where she states it’s easier for her to write to her, and the assistant teacher says “well it’s easier for Nishimiya to do ASL”, not accounting for how Ueno feels and instead, again, accommodating for Nishimiya’s deficiency (and it’s made evident this what the impression the author wanted to give off when they show the reading scene where Ueno is told to stop reading, yet Nishimiya who can’t correctly pronounce the words, is allowed to continue) AS A KID this stings because nobody is taking to account HOW YOU feel. Ueno explains this feeling to her on the Ferris Wheel and she says she doesn’t want to be friends and can’t bring herself to forgive her, which is understandable because to Ueno, Nishimiya only burdens those she interacts with, which isn’t exactly true (from our omniscient eyes) but isn’t exactly false either (from what she’s seen). Ueno tells her it’s okay to hate her because Ueno hates her too and they can act as if they tolerate each other for the group (for Ishida’s sake obviously, more obvious in the manga) but Nishimiya says “I don’t hate you, I hate myself ” this statement causes Ueno to erupt because she feels she’s not listening to her and she’s not trying to understand her even to this day, all Nishimiya can do is “apologize” ...this moment was Ueno trying to compromise for Ishida in her own way without exactly lying to herself about how she feels about Nishimiya, but Nishimiya, In Ueno’s eyes, rejects this. We, the Audience, know Nishimiya harbors no ill will against her. Ueno loves Ishida, this has been obvious since they were kids, and it’s still the case when they’ve grown up, she regrets not standing up for him when everyone else used him as a scapegoat. She is doing everything in her power to get him to forgive her and accept her just as Ishida is doing the SAME for Nishimiya. To Ueno, Nishimiya coming to the school ruined everything, the friendship with Ishida and the chemistry within the classroom as a whole. In her eyes, she’s only seen Nishimiya as being a burden and when Ishida almost loses his life to save Nishimiya, she is justifiably upset. You seriously cannot tell me she had no right to be when the guy she cares for and loves nearly kills himself in order to save the girl who she sees as being only a burden for him, in her eyes this reinforces her belief. She confronts her at the hospital and attacks her, letting out all her frustrations and anger on Nishimiya and also her mom when she shows to defend her. The only person who can understand how Ueno feels in this scene is Nishimiya’s sister. THIS is why Nishimiya’s sister doesn’t stop Ueno, and does anyone give her shit for it? No. I really don’t see how anyone says her arc is bad because if you pay any attention to the supporting characters, you may not like it, but you can understand where she’s coming from. She doesn’t have to have a redeeming character arc for her character arc to be successful. because a character doesn’t react the way you think you would doesn’t make them inherently bad characters. She says back then she couldn’t understand her as a person but she was doing the BEST SHE COULD, but Nishimiya couldn’t understand her either, and so she intentionally started to badmouth her in order to give the hint to stay away, but Nishimiya doesn’t take up on it. (Again I feel the Manga explains this better and shows the bullying wasn’t as immediate as the movie let’s on) She never denies her part of her bullying after they grow up, in fact she takes responsibility for it as opposed to back when they were kids, this is growth from her as a kid because she let Ishida take the fall alone. I think that it’s entirely the teachers/adults fault for forcing the kids into a situation they were not prepared for, they weren’t equipped with knowledge and maturity they have now. Everyone has their own way of projecting emotions and their frustrations, I’m not saying she was in the right for attacking Nishimiya because she wasn’t, Nishimiya did not mean for Ishida to be hurt, BUT I’m saying I can understand where Ueno is coming from having almost lost someone she truly cares for and loves. The same way people say Ueno “development was weak” can be said for Nishimiya. She’s still apologetic and despite everyone’s attempts to make her see the good in the world and in herself she still tries to kill herself, is that fair to state? Of course not, because we can understand her and where she’s coming from, we know depression and self-loathing can’t be remedied with something from a first aid kit. It takes time and it takes self reflection and even that, sometimes isn’t enough. Is her anger misplaced, in our eyes maybe, but in her eyes no, it’s all about perspective. I don’t think it’s fair to say Ueno’s reaction was unjustified either, because at this point, Ishida hasn’t woken up yet and is a coma, she’s again grieving in the sense you would for loss, and emotions are at an all time high for everyone. Her perspective is “you did this to him and he’s dead and you aren’t”. She doesn’t know if he’s waking up or not, she just knows Nishimiya was there and Nishimiya was trying to kill herself and Ishida stopped her, and now he’s badly hurt. This enforces her stance that Nishimiya only brings misery. I think we can all agree with the sentiment of “actions have consequences” Nishimiya actions resulted in Ishida being hurt. Did she mean for it happen? Of course not. But it did, and Ueno (who’s already shown to be violent) is projecting her anger on who she sees is the source. I do advise reading the manga because the Manga protrays this soo much better and gives soo much more details in this scene. In conclusion, I really appreciate the take on Ueno’s character and she gets soo much hate for being human.

Can people stop trying to compare A Silent Voice and Your Name? Aside from having both movies focused on a boy and girl's relationship, the two stories and themes they are showing are completely different. Its like asking what's better "A Cheese Burger or Ice Cream?" those two options are wayyy different to compare.

The X's on peoples faces are the people he has pushed out of his life, he doesnt interact with them, always looks down and so they are exed out of his life. This makes him feel alone even in company, and the cause of his depression. By opening up to people and mending relationships he is by the end, able to look at others again. Truly beautiful

Rick absolutely got it right. Love and Moon sounds similar in Japan. It's "Suki" and "Tsuki". Also funnily enough, "tsuki ga kirei" (the moon is beautiful, isn't it.) is a phrase commonly used to express love to someone and Shoyo just replied with a "yeah the moon is beautiful" LMAO

When i saw rhis movie i went in thinking i was gonna dislike it or be bored. I've dealt with depression and suicidal thoughts. I've lost emotion of sadness most i feel is emptiness instead. It's very very very difficult for me to cry. This movie, 20 minutes in (when they are in the classroom fighting) the frustration they felt, the frustration i felt. Me trying to come up with words for what i was experiencing. All of that together just made me choke up and burst into tears. Felt great. This movie is incredible. My favorite

"moon - tsuki (月/つき)" has the sound closest to "like - suki (好き/すき)", it's been a perpetual vocab thing for japanese, so much so that there are actual old japanese writings doing that wordplay Japanese accents are also depending on the region, like in english programs you hear BBC english, New York english, Boston/Cali/Texas/Southern... depending on the region of Japan on how close proper (classic Kyoto imperial accent vs modern Tokyo big city) to how "hick/hillbilly" (osaka or other areas with ranches)

I don't get how it was so hard for him to figure out why the X's where placed, it was so simple, the X's were representing his anxiety, he cannot make eye contact, he recognized the black haired girl at that point because he knew her face and we had to see her, and he wanted to try reconnecting it's so simple

This movie always gets me in my feels no matter what. Love that y'all are reacting to this one. Have yall seen Promare? It's another really good anime movie with action and certain themes that can correlate to irl.

Oh, by the way, in Japan, bullying works differently. Usually, when someone is bullied, it’s the entire class and even the teacher bullying that person. The teacher wasn’t just idly covering his mouth/talking with his back to the students. He did that very deliberately. The teacher also only stepped in when Shouko’s mom brought it up with administration because his job was at stake there. He also pinned all of the bullying on Shoyo, who admittedly was the most physical with the bullying. Although, thinking about it, the girls’ bullying might have been more insidious, but less noticeable. They started not only bullying Shouko, but also Sahara for even trying to help Shouko to the point where she had to transfer schools. Again, Shoya’s bullying was the most harmful to her physically (considering he permanently damaged her ear to the point where she was only able to use one hearing aid after that) but that doesn’t at all devalue the girls’ bullying.

I never thought I'd see the day. The first anime movie since becoming an adult that made me cry.

The best thing I could find on Ripples in Water is that a person's actions affect others(for good or bad)/can reap consequences that will eventually ripple back to them. It's something I'd also been seeing in anime plenty and been wondering about recently.

There is a scene in assassination classroom where if you watch it dubbed, the characters sound like average English in the states. However, they’re Japanese kids and when they actually speak to Americans we get to hear them speak English with a Japanese accent; implying every other time we hear them, the kids are actually speaking Japanese to each other. The viewer is just hears it as regular English because it’s a dub.

I absolutely adore this movie. Really speaks to me and its touching. I always cry during it. Thanks for reacting to it

Kyoto Animation was the studio who animated this film, a studio that's famous for adapting series that have cute & adorably animated characters, comical moments, & tend to tug at the heart in more ways than one. they were also one of the few animation studios in Japan that also cared immensely about it's staff (that department in Japan is not the best to work in to put it lightly). they sadly underwent an Arson attack over a year ago, with many lives either being injured or taken in the aftermath. the silver lining is that after such a horrible event had occured, a Gofundme page was made in support of the studio, and the worker's family and loved ones, surpassing the original goal by a long shot. not to mention how many creators on this platform released a video showing their appreciation for the studio, and how many artists made tribute works after hearing about the sad news. just goes to show that media such as anime can have more value than simply entertainment for so many people. they've only recently started back up & working again, with Violet Evergarden, but it's still horrible what happened to them and the people related to anyone working at the studio. with that being said, now onto my thoughts on the film Silent Voice. so i don't exactly remember if it was confirmed, but the actress for Shoko (Lexi Marman-Cowden) from what i heard was actually deaf. what i like about this film, is that in some ways, everyone who interacted with Shoko, has done things that aren't things that can be forgiven. more or less, that group is full of flawed, selfish, and even terrible people. but the nice thing about it, is that it is centered on the idea that people can change. it doesn't redeem them, it doesn't make them forgivable, but it does show that they are willing to change somehow. that's something a handful of people, especially nowadays, don't seem to understand, is that people can change from who they were a long time ago. Shoya, and his group of friends, were not great people when they were children, and while now they're not essentially the best, they are working to better themselves in some way or another. a lot of people compared this to the film Your Name on which was better, which i'm in agreement with the statement that there's nothing wrong with liking them both. I liked both films, but i personally liked A Silent Voice a little more than Your Name. doesn't mean i think less of it because of that, it's just my personal preference and i enjoyed both films in their own rights. i personally love both of the mothers in this film. Shoya's Mom is incredibly caring, and Shoko's Mom just doesn't take shit from anyone. fun fact: the voice of Satoshi in the dub is Max Mittleman, the voice of Saitama in One Punch Man.

i deal a lot with depression and ive attempted suicide before so i badly wanted you guys to react to this because this film means a lot to me. luckly i havent been that bad since 2014 however this year has made my depression worse than it has been. i watched this movie a few months ago and it broke me. this was on my recommended on netflix and i watched it not knowing what it was. this is one of my favorite films now. so thank you for watching this

I love this movie. I went in with little expectations and felt it was great. A good example of you never know what someone else is going through. I always felt that the X's were him not letting people in. Both from not being worthy of it and if you let people in you can't be hurt. While he was a bully, they all were and then went on to bully him. So when he let's people in the X goes away.

Finally, you guys reacted to this masterpiece... thus movie is definitely the best out there with heavy feels throughout the movie... I have seen countless movies (HOLLYWOOD and Bollywood) but nothing is great enough compared to KOE NO KATACHI/A SILENT VOICE...

A little bit late about this. Now, let me start this off that, there's nothing wrong with watching EN Sub. It's just that in this movie, there are several context that are laid out if you watched this in EN Sub. For example, the scene on the bridge where Shoko tried to confess that she likes him audibly, but Shoya misunderstood it as "moon". In Nihongo, the phrase "I like you" can be translated as "Suki" which is why when she tries to say it, albeit in a mumbling manner, Shoya (as well as the audience) only heard the syllable *-ki*. Shoya misunderstood it as the moon which is "tsuki" in Nihongo. It's also some sort of a running joke (or trope if you will) across several animes with romance subplot, that a character says "tsuki" to indirectly confess their attraction towards another character, or mislead. about him falling into the `pond`and bleeding. its cause he didnt actually fall into the water. he fell onto some bushes. if you watch the frame while he is falling , there is no water to be found. We also see the egg fallign into the bowl, which represents him falling and hitting the ground, afterwards being in the water is just a expresion of how he feels. he feels cold like being into the deep sea, without a sound. then he says he feels warm. cause of the blood. its all symbolism.
