Because of the fire that burned all the books the shrine people don't have the information that the comet probably will separate the next time, so for the last 1200 years that family has been having this dreams into the future to warn them, but nobody before Mitsuha/Taki actually got to solve the mystery and save the town. Imo is an analogy, like we (all humans) "forget" why did we incarnated here and now, our soul's purpose, so we don't grow (in a karmic sense) and keep repeating the same mistakes life after life, generation after generation.

The "dreams" (body swapping) was some sort of magical spell that got cast upon their bloodline after they did the cuchikamisake ritual for thousands of years, as a way of being able to protect the people of Itomori if another comet hit (because in the story, 1200 years ago the first comet hit Itomori, and that's what created the lake in the middle). The body-swapping to another person in the future acted as a way to warn the incoming danger and evacuate Itomori in case another comet hit. In fact, I think it was a fragment of the exact same comet, because the comet has a cycle of 1200 years and the first comet had hit 1200 years ago. :)

So there's a manga that was written to supplement this movie and the main story. The real reason that Mitsuha's father finally agreed to evacuate the town was because of one reason, he saw his late wife Futaba in his own daughter. The manga of Your Name: Another Tale Earthbound, shares the backstory of when he first met and married Mitsuha's mother. He originally came to Itomori to study the town's history and culture. And he gave up everything from his life to stay in Itomori, marry Futaba, and become part of the town as a shrine priest as the movie states. Futaba performed the same dance that we see Mitsuha and Yotsuha perform at the beginning of this movie. And at this point, after he spent enough time with her, Futaba confessed that for mysterious reasons, she knew that when she first laid eyes on him, something was telling her that she would marry him, no question about it. After they were married and they started their family, Futaba actually described the story about how the lake was formed and that a long time ago, a fragment of the comet caused the crater to form, and then the lake was filled in over the years. She actually saw, in her dreams, that the comet was going to strike again and that all the women in her family line had witnessed this particular dream but had no idea of the impending doom. So, when Mitsuha finally returned and tried to ask one last time to evacuate the town, her father saw the spitting image of Futaba, his late wife. Ultimately, all the memories of why he stayed in Itomori came flooding back at that moment. It was because of his family that he tried to work so hard. As fate would have it, he was the head of the town and able to get everyone to evacuate. Not only did Mitsuha help save the citizens of Itomori with Taki's help, but this implies that Futaba also could rest easy as her role as one of the shrine maidens of her family was fulfilled as well.

I did NOT expect this, hell yeah, one of my favorite anime movies Funny thing is: I went into this with the mindset „everyone always says you’re gonna cry watching this so prove them wrong and don’t“ - I held up pretty well, then the last scene came and I started bawling at literally the last line proving everyone right in the end ^^

@@animusswtor4822 This was honestly the last movie I expected to see them react to. XD Don't get me wrong, I thought Your Name was a great movie, but I feel it was a bit to ambitious in what it was trying to set up. It had some really intriguing ideas and themes (such as the ribbon of fate, shrine gods, Mitsuha's family, etc) but it focused so much on just establishing the setting and the character's lifestyle that it leaves little room for not just the relationships between the main cast and the side characters for us to grow connected but also the chemistry between Mitsuha and Taki. Especially since we don't see Taki's problems with his own life that we do with Mitsuha in the beginning so it comes off as one-sided. That being said, I've always loved watching romances involving two people coming to an understanding of each other and forming something meaningful and seeing this executed in such a competent manner compared to most anime is so gratifying that I didn't think about my problems with it. Overall, it was a fun, heartwarming movie of "boy meets girl" but if it were a properly fleshed-out 12 episode anime, it would've been in my top 10. Weathering With You on the other hand...HOLY MOTHER OF SUNSHINE GIRL. Not did it fix the problems I had with Your Name, but it subverted my expectations on the ending and gave one of THE MOST profoundly powerful message that resonated with me on a such a relatable level that it got me worked up when I left the cinema. I'll gush more about it when they react to it in August but suffice to say, THAT was a masterpiece.

Lan well haven’t watched that one yet honestly but I’m hearing only good things so far and definitely do plan on watching it , And I kinda get you on the points you make but I just love it so much and it’s basically my opener for the top 10 at the number 10 spot, though an anime series version would be amazing too ^^ Also in terms of romance anime with the characteristics you described I’d say there’s no better one than „Sakurasou no pet na kanojo“ for that, just amazing from start to finish and a really really great message , but I feel like such a romance lover like you has probably already watched it, Also i think I see you in almost every of my recent comments on BWs anime videos man^^

btw at the beginning when Mitsuha is in Taki's body and talking to his friends at school and starts saying "a girl.." and then says guys just want to have fun, in japanese it makes more sense because Mitsuha says "watashi" which is a very formal way of saying "I", and not something Taki would say around his friends, when it is used in a casual setting it is seen as more feminine as well. she then switches to "ore" (pronounced sorta like "o-rey") which is a much more informal and masculine "I". Also when the grandma says things are "unions", the Japanese word she uses is "musubi" which can be translated as a bond as in a knot in a string or bond in a relationship, the word also has origins in the shinto creation myth relating to the power of creation. There's also folklore about the "Red Thread of Fate", which actually goes back to Chinese mythology, and it's typically thought of as an invisible red thread around the fingers, usually the pinky, of people that are destined to meet. "The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of place, time, or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break. This myth is similar to the Western concept of soulmate or a destined partner."

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! There’s so much background stuff that’s super clever but not really focused on in the movie and you only REALLY think about it after multiple viewings, for example: (Spoilers) The different timeline twist is cleverly revealed pretty much from the start; the dates in their phone diaries. It’s the same dates (ie 9/12) but on different days of the week, as they’re offset by a few years. The grandma says that you have to leave a part of you behind whenever you leave the underworld/spirit world, that’s why they bring the sake to the shrine. When Mitsuha and Taki revisit it, their memories of each other are left behind, that’s why they so quickly forget each other. The comet visits every 1200 years, and splits every time. The shrine where they leave the sake is located in one of the impact craters, and the town of Itomori was also formed around one of the impact craters. I’m sure there’s more, but this is the stuff that I remember most. Such a good movie!!!!

I’m sorry if this was late but to answer one of you guys’ questions about the whole forgetting and erasing data thing; I don’t know if it was mentioned in the dub but it’s mentioned in the movie that to enter/leave the shrine, you need to offer the most important thing to you. For Taki and Mitsuha, it was their memories of each other. That was the price they paid for a second chance.

@@animusswtor4822 That's not the point of the movie. The point of the movie is to showcase how regret and unresolved issues in your childhood can deeply affect your adult life and on how distance can affect our lives. Takaki wasn't really "hung up" on the girl, he was hung up in the idea of failing to connect with people, exemplified by the fact that he had a serious relationship but in the end couldn't connect with her or let go of his childhood traumas/experiences. It is a very touching, subtle and symbolic movie, and obviously not made for mainstream audiences at all.

Blindwave: watches Your Name Most of the comments: watch A Silent Voice cowards Lets talk about the movie they are watching everyone. Your Name is a beautiful, gorgeous, fantastic and wholesome movie. I also recommend people to rewatch the movie because it has some subtle hints on what is going on. The movie also has quite a bit of symbolism as well.

I'm a sucker for these kind of movies but I always get too emotional and afraid to rewatch them, that said when I watched it I was expecting a sadder end so knowing it isn't I'd definitely be down to watch it again. Otherwise I agree, it's a very condense story which most beautiful ones are, it has a lot of meaning with so little time it gives you, but it's worth so much more.

Meh I don’t really like Your Name. The main characters felt like pieces of cardboard and the side characters felt like they didn’t even exist. The plot was boring and uninteresting. The actual love story didn’t make any sense at all seeing as the two of them had never met each other and only knew each other via the perspectives of other people on that person.
@roberttate3920
@roberttate3920 3 жыл бұрын
@@isaacwilcox3010 Yeah I didn't feel that way at all. I found the plot to be very engaging and kept me on wondering what was gonna happen next. I wouldn't say it was a love story, at least to me it didn't feel that way. It was more like two people getting to know each other from a unique perspective. I love the main characters, along with the side characters. The emotional journey and impact it had on me is why I love the movie so much.
@isaacwilcox3010

Robert Tate You just expressed one of my main problems with the film. It tries to act like it’s a romance film when it would work much better as a friendship film. However even if you didn’t feel like the movie was trying to be a romance film that doesn’t change the fact the film is meant to be a romance. It was intended to be a romance film and that’s very obvious when Taki literally writes “I love you” on her hand. That’s the exact problem, the film tries to act like the characters are having a romance when in reality they are really just gaining an appreciation for each other and their lives. The film shouldn’t have gone with the romance plot because it fails at it.
@roberttate3920
@roberttate3920 3 жыл бұрын
@@isaacwilcox3010 So I see where you're coming from, but I don't have an issue with it. It has elements of romance, but at the same time being a bit different. Taki writing "I love you" is just how he felt at that moment when he wrote it on her hand. It's because of the emotional journey these characters went through. They learned more about each other after every switch. Also, I don't think the film has a full-blown romance plot. I do not think the movie is trying to be your typical romance movie. It's romance but with a unique take on it.

I loved you reaction! Please react to A Silent Voice, it came out the same year but it got overshadowed a bit by Your Name. @@trxps2829 you're absolutely correct on the character animation being better in A Silent Voice, I was thinking about the environment mostly, being more eye pleasing in Your Name. Both movies are great no doubt. I think for me though, I prefer Your Name because of how much I felt after watching it the first time. The biggest thing for me is the characters. While Silent Voice has a much more mature story, I didn't really enjoy most of the characters. I know we're not suppose to like a couple of the characters, but I heard the manga does a better job developing the characters by making them more sympathetic. I feel that by the end of the movie, none of the characters really developed or changed except for the two main ones. Still a great movie, but I think the way how the characters were written felt rushed.

I love this reaction!!! All of your reactions were amazing! Also in case you were curious about Mitsuha’s ribbon, it’s design actually represents the comet and the lake, and its red color is also because it represents the red string of fate, the invisible strings that connect soulmates to each other. If you ever rewatch the movie you’ll realize all of the hidden hints that Mitsuha was in the past, such as the museum date, the drawing that Taki was staring at was one that he drew, and it was a memorial exhibition
