Thought I would make a sheath for the old Western Fields knife that my good friend MCK done a restoration on. Its rough but it works. / mckwilly

The only thing I recommend different is unless it's for a stainless steel knife use a good vegetable tanned leather. The crome tanned leather I used for this is hard on a carbon steel blade. Thanks for watching and God bless.

I’m looking to make a simple knife sheath so I came to KZfaq. Lo and behold, I am looking to make one for this exact knife.

The sheath worked well but I did learn to be careful when selecting the leather. Use a good oil tanned leather for carbon steel knives. If you use the cheap leather tanned with other chemicals and such you will have to maintain the knife more often. It's not good for long term storage. It will cause the carbon steel to rust and pit. Thanks for watching and God bless

You don't need all the fancy leather tools. You don't even have to have the drill press. You can use a hand drill or a punch. A hammer and a nail will put a hole in it.

............No need to fret over lack of skills on that sheath....Looks great. I knew the pattern of oak leaves/acorns looked familiar on your old sheath.....I have an old Western Fields knife similar to yours I bought at Montgomery Ward long ago....still have it.....ATB

Looks like a perfectly good sheath to me.Im lefty so I have a bunch of knives that I rarely get to carry.Ive been wanting to get some good sheaths for them but the one size fits all type of sheaths are often a let down and buying custom made sheaths are expensive.I don’t care to spend a couple hundred dollars on a good quality knife but I hate having to turn around and spend $50-$80 on a custom made sheath right after..that gets expensive..I may either buy some leather and try to do as you have done here or buy a few sheets of kydex and make a kydex press and try my luck..Im not crazy about the polymer sheaths that came with my some of my ESEE knives but atleast they are ambidextrous..I’m not crazy about the sheaths that came with my Mora knives but atleast they are ambidextrous..the ambidextrous sheaths they came with my Gerber Prodigy and Gerber StrongArm are decent..some of my favorite knives like my Buck 119,Bradford Guardian 4, Bradford Guardian 4.5,Bark River Aurora Scandi,L.T. Wright Genesis,etc all have right handed only sheaths.I can get a decent left handed leather sheath from Buck for about $25-$30 which is acceptable but Bradford’s leather sheaths don’t have very good retention and their kydex sheaths are like $60 after taxes and shipping..with my Bark River,Battle Horse and L.T. Wright knives I’m looking at a good $50-$80 a piece on the custom sheath market..I end up having to carry some of my favorite knives either in pack or strapped to my pack which works but I would much rather be able to carry them on my belt
@BluegrassBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have a really nice collection. If you like knives that much and are putting that kind of money in them I would definitely buy some leather and give it a try. I hadn't done much of it for a while until recently and a friend has been teaching me to tool leather and I have made a couple that turned out okay. On one I started and cut the leather backwards and it would have been for a lefty. In this video I used cheap scrap leather out of a bag from hobby lobby but I don't really recommend it for anything other than using it to practice with because it is cheap. It is most likely crome oe chemically tanned and can cause a good carbon knife to rust and corrode. Once you start making one for a good knife use a good vegetable tanned leather. Thanks for watching and God bless. Here is one of my tooled sheaths I recently tried. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mtB3fbqZ1d60oJc.html

Just a heads up. If you make one for a carbon steel knife use vegetable tanned leather. The one I made is out of chrome tanned leather from the local craft store. It will rust a well oiled carbon steel blade in a short period of time. I learned this the hard way. It does work well with stainless steel.

That'll work.

Wow this was excellently made considering no leathering tools. Can you please tell me the glue and the thread you used please? Thanks. Well done on your project
@BluegrassBushcraft5 жыл бұрын
Just rubber cement and the thread was a waxed twine found in the leather section at Hobby Lobby or any craft store. Thanks for watching.
@calebanderson23035 жыл бұрын
For sheath making you can buy better leather don’t get it pre dyed it a bit more expansive but it’s worth it to buy leather that comes from a bull of a certain type of cow they tell you at any leather store but it’s much tougher than normal leather

Can't remember the brand but it's a standard contact adhesive rubber cement found at most box and craft stores. Can be found near the school supplies at Walmart.
