Lets build a classic leather sheath for a knife! I am going through all the steps involved to make a classic fold over leather knife sheath. This sheath is extremely easy and is a timeless design that just about anybody can make even with minimal tools. In my sheath making tutorials this would be in the Easy tutorial section for beginners.

That is a very thick leather. Glad I’m not the only one who tortures their swivel knives. Thinner leather feels like I’m working with veneer and it’s way too fragile. I can’t have that. I’m all thumbs and need a sheath that’ll take an ass whuppin’. Love your vids, keep it up!

@rroberts8501
@rroberts8501 3 жыл бұрын
Doing a play by play now... and yes, my waste was in the loop. Wet forming before shaping and such seems to be the key here. I wet formed afterwards and so all that leading up was a pain to get everything folded properly on the knife. Watching the forming now. .... on to part two!

I have made this type of sheath many times, many different ways and this is what I have settled on so far. I am not adverse to adopting new techniques if they make the process more efficient with less waste and a better end product! Thanks for watching! Did you like that I launched both videos at the same time? Or was it confusing?
@rroberts8501

@@Aleeknives Wasnt confusing at all. In fact, it was a welcomed surprise. I was all into the first vid and when I saw that time was running out, I was kinda bummed so it was a nice surprise that both were released at the same time.

I wondered if some people would click on the second video first and maybe not even watch the first one. This one got really long I think between the 2 videos it was like 40 minutes of edited footage! I bet I didn't even take that long to make the actual sheath! Other than waiting over night to let it dry

Hey man great video! Question...I bought a filet knife with a leather sheath...how can I form the sheath that's already been made?
@Aleeknives
@Aleeknives 2 жыл бұрын
If the sheath has already been treated which I suspect it has there isn't much that you can do. If it hasn't just get it wet and form it to the knife

What size clips did you use to hold the leather closed? I tried this method but apparently I used to small of clips so it left in prints in the leather plus the ink from the clips bled into the leather. I used 4-5oz veg, tan leather.

@@Aleeknives A few weeks ago, I asked about your makers mark for your knives. Is this the same makers mark stamp?

Yes, I didn't put a mark on this blade because I didn't have a flat to stamp. That is the 1 downside to using a stamp over electro etching a mark

By cutting out that huge rectangle don't you create a lot more waist then if you are to just create an integral belt loop?

When I first started I would buy belly strips because they where less expensive but harder to work with. Now I buy sides or even whole hides if the price is right. I typically buy sides at $75-100 depending on the current sales. When they are running a good sale I might buy 2 or 3 at a time

So I made one and it worked for a while but the leather must have stretched and now the knife doesn't stay in. What did I do wrong??
@Aleeknives
@Aleeknives 2 жыл бұрын
A couple things to try. Make the next one with tighter tolerances, and make sure you use something like super sheen to coat the leather. The only way leather stretches is from water or oil. Super sheen helps protect from water. It may have to do with the knife design also. There are multiple variables
