Loved King Alfred and David Dawson did a spectacular job. Such an underrated show and actors....

I thought King Alfred was the most interesting character in this series. While not physically strong he is intelligent, ambitious and cunning. He certainly knows which buttons to press with Uhtred

He's a jerk, but also the most compelling character on the show. He's too severe -- his religion makes him too severe. But his faith, severity, and shrewdness, are his greatest strengths, and together they make him so believably... kingly.

+Isaac Levine Alfred's strategic use of Christianity to pacify a war-torn realm may well have required him to be an unforgiving jerk. That being said, I certainly wouldn't want to find myself on the receiving end of Alfred's stoic, long-suffering gaze.

I found him totally mesmerizing & really attractive. I also found him to be deeply compassionate & never got why so many people think hes a jerk, he clearly does what he does for the greater good & peace he believes in. Hes more open minded & tolerant than most of his other allies are of Uthred & his wife is a big problem as she never stops her nagging & venom.

Also worth noting that this is historic fiction, these battles & ideas & plans & inventions happened under the real Alfreds rule, but Uthred was not behind then, his part of the story is made up, & loosely based on a warrior of the same name who fort in Northumbria some 150 years later. Never did their paths cross.

190 years before the Norman Conquest (1066 CE), 78 years before the unification of Anglo-Saxon England (954 CE), the future nation is first conceived...not by a warlord, but by a scholar-king. Alfred the Great becomes an intellectual torch for a dark age.

@@lordofhostsappreciator3075 Considering the Orthodox Church didn’t exist until 1054, considering Alfred lived in the West, and considering he was a guest of the Pope for a year while visiting Rome, I dare to say he was Catholic through and through.

I loved Alfred the great of England. He was a physically weak man but had a strong will. He showed that strong will is above all else. He remined me in a way of Prince Abbas Mirza of Iran. He was also a sickly man but stood strong against Russians during the wars of 19th century

Aelswith is the most thankless and ungrateful character. Never does she thank Uhtred for all he does, Alfred is the same but he knows Uhtred's value deep down.

Eliza Butterworth plays Ealhswith brilliantly. Ealhswith also changes in season 4 and is instrumental in the fate of England.

uthred should have destroyed alfred and his line become king of mercia then take back north umbria east anglia and wessex and become king of england himself if he had joined with his brother it might have been an actual option without him the saxons have no chance and he could force the other danes into submission

Uhtred is a fictional character so he can’t be King. The author of the books had to keep,as much as he could,to the written records. The writers of The Last Kingdom,changed what was in the books to make the television drama. It’s still an exciting story. No need to impose 21st century beliefs on what is an entertaining piece of drama . People will take what they want from it ….and simply enjoy it.
