Embark on a remarkable journey back in time. This video brings to life a translated and modernized version of the original text, 'Gesta Francorum et aliorum Hierosolimitanorum' (The Deeds of the Franks and the Other Pilgrims to Jerusalem). We've meticulously updated the wording to contemporary English while ensuring that the essence and authenticity of the original narrative remain intact.
'Gesta Francorum' offers a unique perspective on the First Crusade, as it is believed to have been written by a common soldier. This rare view into the past gives us a firsthand account of the events as seen and experienced by someone who was not a chronicler, noble, or general, but rather an ordinary participant in these historic events. The text's simplicity, devoid of ornate language, presents the facts and experiences in a straightforward manner, providing a raw and genuine glimpse into the life of a crusader.
We delve into the brutal trials, triumphs, and everyday realities faced by these crusaders, painting a picture of their journey and experiences. From the initial call to arms to the climactic siege of Jerusalem, 'Gesta Francorum' captures the essence of an era that shaped history.
If you're fascinated by the untold stories of history and the perspectives of the common man in monumental events, this video is for you. Join us in uncovering the layers of the past, and experience history like never before.

It’s very interesting how the Byzantine Empire and Alexios I is portrayed. The Great Schism had occurred in 1053. The Byzantines had sustained an almost mortal blow at the hands of the Ottoman Turks at Manzikert in 1071, so they can be forgiven for being cagey when a host of hairy, angry Franks turned up on their doorstep demanding passage. As it was, Alexios skilfully managed the situation and did the best he could. Excellent presentation, as always.

LOVE THIS! Thank you for sharing. Some of the most precious stories from history, are the first-hand accounts from "the little guys" lost in time.

Bravo! I really enjoyed this personal account - what an ordeal, but what an adventure! There was a real admix of politics, military might and religious fervour. I have read some different accounts of these crusades, but this was the best 'feet on the ground' record by far.

Thanks, brother! Our purpose is to take the "archaic" out of ancient texts and make them more relatable to a modern audience. Sometimes we overdo it a bit - we're still working on striking the right balance.

So, do you use AI to rewrite these stories with a bit of a modern twang, then use an AI voice to do the read? No disrespect intended however it's a serious question. Either way I really enjoy them. Thanks.

We do a combination of AI and manual writing. AI makes us *much* more efficient, but it can't stand alone. I get this question very often, perhaps I should do a post or a video on it.

@@TheLegendaryLore it would be an interesting video. It's not about calling you lazy or uncreative, I think ones ears can pick up on bits the same as ones eyes can while watching an edit or effect as such. Again, really enjoy the reads.

The crusades is not my strongest suit, but AFIK it's a pretty reliable regarding the big events - especially for battles and routes. Whomever wrote it was actually there, so his firsthand stories give us a good feel for what the Crusaders went through. Of course, it's got some biases, but many historians seem comfortable with using it as reliable primary source.

Yeah so, I appreciate the effort you put into this but the translations aren't totally correct. I'll provide you with an excerpt to demonstrate a more accurate translation. "When the Turks at Antioch finally saw Wise Bohemond's chin and jawline they knew it was over, they could do nothing to stand against such power so they turned and fled from Wise Bohemond and his smart nephew Tancred, covering their hair and faces in shame for they realized that in the presence of Wise Bohemond that they were as women.
