@@SurfskateLove i went to your website and its fantastic, i used it to find some board options. I have decided on Carver CX, there is two models i have decided on, i just can’t decide which one. What would you pick friend. 29.45 Length or 31.45 Length, would there be much difference in the feeling here?? Or just go with the board i like the look of better. Both are Carver CX Trucks

Actually have 2 surfskates now, 2 different but similar systems, both are Carvers. First one I bought last summer was just the C7 trucks itself and I paired it up with a shaped street deck/pool deck, slightly longer than a normal street deck. Just picked up the 29 Swallow with the CX, completely different feel but loads of fun for the short ride I did out to my car from the store. Will have to say that the C7 feels a little more flowy while the CX is a little more snappy. Now get to enjoy both worlds.

hey Steve, well done, you do a fantastic job on your videos and reviews, keep it up, congratulations!!! Would you mind if I make a suggestion about your riding tho? There are two major things that you're not doing right when you're riding these boards on your videos.. and I really recommend you to keep an eye on them, your performance will increase tremendously. 1) Your back foot must be placed farther behind, as close to the tail as you can, and most importantly, KEEP your toes inside the board. Always keep the top of your feet inside the board, never out. That will give you massive control over your turns cause it will allow you to take advantage of your heels properly to compress your knee in and out. 2) Dissociated arm position! Instead of riding it 'in parallel, which means, front arm following the direction of the front leg.. you should do the opposite (your back arm must be pointing in the direction you go, and so should your head). That will force you to keep your shoulders going forward.. and that's a massive game-changer. I've been riding surfskates for many years and also tried all the options out there.. my favorite is the Swelltech Hybrid Camo, and I ride mostly bowls/half pipes and transition ramps with it to practice all the surf movements. All these tips came from my SurfSkate instructor and made me perform a million times better. Try them out :)

Hey Steve, fellow Utahn here! Thanks for the videos! I'm in my late 40's and used to skate back in the 80's-90's. I've been wanting to get back on a board so I built an electric skateboard a couple years ago. It was fun, but potentially too dangerous and not for me. Lately I've been wanting just a regular longboard and stumbled across your Surfskate vids and am sold on the idea. I'm a fabricator/welder and tinkerer so I'm going to grab one of the Waterborne kits to mess around with. I'm in Central Utah, but love going down to St. George. The scenic paved trails in Ivins before Snow State park are my favorite and can't wait to get down there when I get a board and cruise! Are there any Surfskate groups/rides down there?

I’m also on the older end of the spectrum, i already surf skate a bit, but am looking to get into riding pools/bowls after watching your inspiring vids. Amazing where you got to from day 1 to day 30. Currently I just “borrow” my wife’s surf skate, a carver w/ a 15” wheelbase, but my stance is actually 18. So, looking to get a new board. Couple of questions, would you recommend a CX or C7 truck? Thank you so much for uploading this video! I've been wanting to skate for a long long time but kinda never had the courage to actually go for it. I've also been worried about buying a wrong skateboard because there aren't really any shops nearby where I could ask for help, so buying one online is the "best" option 😅 Now I've never been skating (except for trying it once or twice but you can't call that skating at all😂) but I am very interested in surfskates! I've been trying to do quite some research and I am very happy that I found your video!😊 Would you recommend the YOW PUKAS DARK 34.5'' to a complete beginner who's more interested in cruising than doing tricks, etc.? Because somewhere I've read that YOW is more suitable for experienced skaters. There are so many different opinions online, it is quite hard to know which one to choose.😅 Oh and I am somewhere between 6' and 6'1😂🙋🏼‍♀️ Greetings from Switzerland!🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭💜

Hi Steve - thank you for this resource. I am like you, a cruiser at heart (20 yr snowboarder, recently with hardboots, so carving is the thing that drew me to surfskate). Steering towards YOW (which I can get in Switzerland). Just had a question on width. I have size 12 Euro feet (mondo 29.5 ish). Is it better getting the Teahupoo (34" long, 19" WB, 10" wide) or something like an Arika (33" long, I think 19.5" WB?, 10.5" wide)? I would be a complete surfskate beginner, but I did test drive in the shop a Carver (not sure which, but it was short) and a YOW Teahupoo, and the YOW was way easier to initiate, and had more "lean travel" (not sure of the technical term). I wasn't fast, but I did get moving ok, and once I work out the limits of lean, I feel I will get a good rhythm. I am 5'10" and about 85kg (but aiming to be less in non-pandemic times). Just curious how foot length affects things... Generally, I do worry about how this would work with cruising (it's very twitchy on the front, and I can't imagine a skatepark at all to be honest). Having said that, I live on the side of a steep hill, so cruising is limited. But quite happy to burn energy at the local school playground practicing carving for winter... :-)

Thanks Steve for providing so much information for the community. I am debating between a YOW Pipe Power and a YOW Lakey Peterson Peak Power. From my research, the main difference is concave. One is performance concave (which I assume means deeper concave) and the other is medium concave. The other is the wheelbase difference of 0.5 inches (18.5 vs 19 both falls into my comfort category). Based on your experience that YOW's concave is generally really low and flat, which one would you recommend?
@Shaesi.

Performance concave is not deeper than medium. It's between low and medium. You can check the 3d viewer on Yow's website.

I have the new version of the Yow Pukas. It's my first board (I'm a beginner). I've been using it for about a month now and love it. The only bad thing about it is that I might be too short for it. I'm only 160 cm tall and I can't stand on the tail permanently because my legs are too short. So I always switch between standing on the tail when I want to turn with it (to lift it off the ground) and standing where the back bolts are. Still, I feel comfortable on it. I would also like to try carvers, but I want to get more experienced before I get a new board. And then definitely a smaller deck.

@@Acolyte_of_Cthulhu The 34.5 one - I am just 160 cm and my weight is around 54 kilos. So yeah, I am pretty light and small. I still love that board tho. It feels pretty stable, what's good for a beginner like me. But I doubt that I will be able to use it to its full potential.

Hi Steve!! Thank you the video! I would like training carving and turning techniques to the snowboard. I would like learning deep carving in the snowboard, and i think this surfskate movements very similar. I don' t like long cruising (my city hasn't big good place). I'm interested in the techniques on little place (etc car parking). I am about 167cm and 80kg, what do you think, which surfskate good for this practice from EU?? Thank you!! Bye!!👊😉

Hi and thank you for the very useful video. So I think I chunked down my choice but still have some doubts. I'm a total beginner, 190 cm tall. My finalists are: Carver 36.5" 777 C7 Carver 33.75" Greenroom C7 Smoothstar Manta Ray 35.5" YOW x Pukas Dark 34.5" YOW Byron Bay 38″ All kinda out of budget but I'll worry about that once I know how big is my problem :) What's the difference in feeling between meraki S5 and Carver C7? And then I wanted to ask you what you think of globe Surfskate? Thanks a lot for everything!!

Yow has already added a 3D simulation of their boards (for at least 8 months - maybe as response to this clip?) to see the concave and shape. And they do have high concave boards in their stock at least for 5 years now (I own an old Yow Snappers). So that’s not the whole truth. But otherwise great work, you really love surfskating :)

Awesome video, so that raises the question for me, i am looking for a YOW, Is going for a 17 inch wheelbase to short for me or should i better go for a 19 inch looking at my heigh? I am 6.3 tall I am looking for a board to make tight turns and more surfy feel. And why is the lenght of the board so important? Becuase i own a carver 31,75 inch 19 inch wb CX truck currently. But going to a longer board with shorter wheelbase doesnt make much difference does it? Because you can’t put your feet over the wheels otherwhise you nose dive so you dont really make use of that extra space on the board. Or am i seeing this wrong?

It gets even more nuanced because certain trucks allow you to move up further on the deck. For example, on both Carvers and Slides you can stand pretty much right on top of the truck. But with others, like Smoothstar and SwellTech, you have to be behind the truck to maintain the proper balance. You're right that wheelbase is actually more important than length. So a 17" wheelbase may work well on a Carver truck. But I'm 6'2" and I tried the YOW Padang Padang, which has a 17" wheelbase," and I found it to be to tight and therefore squirrely for my stance. But that could also very well be a stance and personal preference thing. Meaning, you may find a 17" wheelbase perfect. I highly recommend the Soulboardiy Revolution Adam, which has an adjustable wheelbase of 17.25" and 19.5". But you'll really just have to play with it to dial in your perfect specs. And for that I highly recommend that you just play with decks you find around, versus buying completes. I honestly think you can find better decks outside of surfskating than you find on most completes (outside of Carvers).

Question- Why don't you buy your decks and trucks separate? I'm looking to get my first surfkskate soon. Being new to skating myself at 54, I started skating at the skatepark with my son two years ago. I'm full on hooked now and I'm comfortable carving bowls FS & BS on bigger 9.5-10.5 decks and 215 trucks and hard wheels. I really just want something for the driveway, street and parking lots without the full skate park experience. I'm just planning on finding the right trucks and slapping them on one of my decks I'm already super comfortable on. I have it narrowed down to Yow or Smoothstar. I've surfed, windsurfed and SUP'd for years but I'm not looking to do blow tails skating, just carving and pumping. Which trucks would you recommend?
@SurfskateLove

You can certainly do that if you have the knowledge, but if you've never tried surfskates before, it's very difficult to put together your own set-up that you love. And for what you're describing, I would probably recommend the Waterborne surf adapter for you to start with.

Why not get one of the carvers with the painted tops?? They look amazing! That Glass off one is gorgeous. Anyone know why those aren’t good?
@SurfskateLove
@SurfskateLove 2 жыл бұрын
My reasoning on that is that all of those models are flat cruising decks. Other decks give you more versatility. And when you’re choosing your first one, I think it’s better to have more options because you don’t know how your skating will evolve. For example, if you get the Glass Off and then start getting into snaps and slides, you’ll wish you had a deck with more concave.

Beginner question here. I know the front truck/turn on these is usually very loose and snappy. My question is about the rear. In the Slalom and LDP worlds, skaters use low-angle trucks zero-25 degrees. Helps with powering forward. Surfskates appear to generally use 45-50-ish degree trucks. Much more turn from the rear - correct? Probably helps with "snap" moves. So...should the higher angle truck have soft bushings for a more responsive rear, or harder bushings for a more solid rear? I've tried a waterborne adapter rear once and it seemed to collapse super quick and was verrry tippy overall. Does the rear vary by beginner (more solid) and advanced (more tippy)? Thanks for your help.

Btw - currently have a hard bushing, Bennett rear on a 1" riser. Would a more "dead" rear (less turny) with looser bushings be a better idea?
@SurfskateLove
@SurfskateLove Жыл бұрын
The general principle is that you want a more solid rear. That's what creates thrust.

Hello Steve, from the vasc country, spain. I like smoothstar, i,m 187cm tall, like you. In this video you tell us that manta ray IS the BEST option for you, but in other videos we can see you riding Toledo 77. Please, tell me why. The manta ray is slightly cheaper than the toledo....¿?

Not sure what you're looking at, but I've never ridden the Toledo 77 in any videos. However, I did ride a friends' once and I actually prefer that over the Manta Ray. But you have to have no more than an 18" wide stance to ride the Toledo.
