The recording does not do justice to the actual sound. Seriously some of those sounds vibrated my chest. I didn't realize whales had such a wide frequency of sound. some were mid to hi frequency and some were very low. After he passed I was thinking will there be another one...It was the size of an underwater School Bus! The dive master said that this is a rare event. Only happens about 1 or 2 a year and he dives over 1500 dives a year.

The most dangerous thing that may happen to you with a humpback encounter might be being accidentally squished between two of them who didn't notice you swimming so close though that is unlikely with the larger older whales who are more adept and aware than the younger more playful ones. A friend of mine took me on his boat to Stellwagon Bank. That day the humpbacks were breaching all around us often towering over us. There were between fifty and a hundred. Our boat was about 30 feet long. Many came right up to the boat. My friend, a zoologist explained that often whales would rub up against boats to scrape off barnacles. The larger ones won't usually try this with a smaller boat but the smaller 20 foot ones will. As one partially breached, kind of the way orcas spy hop, he right up against the boat so my buddy takes out a scraper and scrapes off a bunch of barnacles while the whale more or less stood still. Don't try this though. It's illegal and my buddy had a permit.

It's a beautiful moment but it just solidifies my intense fear of the deep ocean. How this massive thing can just materialize in front of them out of the endless blue void. And this is at the bottom of a "shallow" part, the dark void below is the worst.
@pikppa7 жыл бұрын
Don't worry buddy, whales are harmless :)
@chanel_pearls39937 жыл бұрын
DeathtoRaiden1 I couldn't agree more. I have a fear of the open ocean, as well. My fear is a whale just suddenly swimming towards me out of the blue (No pun intended). I have been whale watching before, but I refused to step outside the boat, as it was windy, and I was afraid I would fall out into the freezing cold water with the Humpbacks, Blues, and Fins we saw.

Did you know that the two largest species of shark, basking and whale are both profoundly gentle and aren't not the slightest bit interested in eating you. In fact, if you are fortunate enough to encounter one, you may even be able to hitch a ride. I was once paddling my kayak in the middle of a harbor in Florida and found myself completely surrounded by a few dozen manatees. I think they weight upwards of half a ton but are also gentle giants. Some of the most dangerous sea creatures are very small with a bite potent enough to kill you. But whales who are both gentle and intelligent only rarely harm humans and usually only if they have really good reason.

My first direct encounter with a humpback was aboard my buddy's boat. He was a cetacean researcher and taught at a university and had a permit to interact with whales on a limited basis. We went right into the middle of their prime feeding ground and we were not disappointed. There were between fifty and a hundred. Some came right up to our little thirty foot boat and rubbed their bellies on it. We cut the motor and were there for about 7 hours. Many times I sat with my bare feet hanging over the side only a couple of feet above the surface of the water and found them being rubbed up against by a humpback. They feel kind of rubbery by the way. I also laid down and put my hand down to touch the water and several times they came right up at that spot and rubbed my hand. The only danger is being cut by a barnacle that tends to grow on them. Imagine looking directly into the eye of a humpback less than two feet away from your face. It was maybe bigger than my fist. It must have had 15-20 times the light gathering capability of a human eye. It looked right at me for about five seconds.

Yes this was a life highlight for me to be sure. Many of you have asked about the coral looking dead. There was a cyclone in 2010 that hit French Polynesia. Much damage to the reef system happened then. www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-1248703/Cyclone-Oli-hits-Tahiti-Latest-travel-advice-tourists-French-Polynesia.html Plus we were diving at about 60-80 feet of water and much of the color was absent at that depth. It is always amazing what you see with a underwater flashlight. We were not screaming at the end but Cheering!!! You can actually see me clapping at the end. Kudos to the dive master. It all happened so fast and then it was gone. I kept looking around for another pass by the whale but no such luck.
@daves.94797 жыл бұрын
Wonderful vid. I had thought that there was excellent water clarity in the South Pacific, but in this vid it looks only so-so; the whale fades from view very quickly. Or is that because of the depth and it's actually better than it looks?

This video really moved me! And I'm glad much of the comments are from people enjoying seeing this ecounter, and not anyone saying negative things about endangered species or how we humans are responsible for the environmental pollution, etc. We have made mistakes on our part, but we can fix them with our wildlife conservation! And since most people are willing to help preserve our planet, that is a sign of hope. :)

Hey did you guys know it was a whale or were you guys scared to find out what it was making those noises. Because if I was under water and didn't know those are the sounds of a whale I wouldbe terrified!

This dive was supposed to be a shark dive. It was our second dive of the morning. The first dive had over 20 Blacktip sharks swimming around us. They were small and harmless. When I first heard the songs I knew it was a whale but he could have been miles away. I had no idea he would cruise by. Remember, we couldn't really ask questions until after the dive.

They sound exactly like that i thought it was a jerseymilk cow birthing a calf but it shakes your whole core, its palpable& moves wildly! Singing whistling moaning growling, i saw 3 off the puna coast big island 1990's. Incredible creatures. Thankyou for this epic reminder of one of the peak moments in my life🐱🌴🐋🐬🐟🐠🐡🌺aloha!

This is fantastic. All at once you get to see two sides of the ocean, the bright color of the coral reefs and then the deep, blue open. Thanks

Sang Hyuk Cho I’m conflicted. You referenced the lord God , them started blaspheming with calling a cow holy , then damned it all ... idk where to begin lol

Cows didnt branch off from Whales, but both have a common ancestor. there was a species at some time in the past that eventually split off from one another and became whales, cows, and Hippos, that is why all three sound similar to a degree
