Can you image how humans in ages past felt about the deep blue? Back in a day where they didn't have computers, Sonar, ROVs, Diving apparatus and techniques, Submarines and Deep Submergence Vehicles etc. They never would've known what's down there, other than the fact it is incredibly deep, and incredibly eerie. No wonder you get tales of things like David Jones locker and the Kraken. Now days we can hit the very bottom of the Mariana Trench.

It's very artistic how you put the video together with the ominous music at the start, transitioning to calming music after a couple of minutes. It describes how your initial fears subside over time and you feel the freedom and happiness of swimming in the ocean. Perhaps you're describing a human's attempts to challenge the vastness of the ocean (or nature) as futile and how peacefully they've accepted they're a tiny, tiny speck in an incomprehensibly large body of water.

I get a kick out of people saying "Wow that's amazingly brave!". The odds of randomly encountering a shark when you are not actively seeking one out is about the same as landing a royal flush in a 5 card stud game (search on youtube you'll find the video). The ocean is a big place.

The unknown is one of many people's biggest fears. Death, is perhqps the biggest unknown, and losing your fear of it is one of the most liberating things you can do.
@brandonporter6223
@brandonporter6223 2 жыл бұрын
First of all its not fear of being attacked by a shark necessarily but rather the fear of something lurking deep, this massive space below you where anything can lie. There are probably thousands of creatures below him at that point, all too far to see, many that don't even see the light from the sun. Sure you know what a shark is and you its unlikely to encounter in that brief period of time, but when you're there knowledge you got from a book or on the internet is very different than actually being there, not really knowing 100% for sure that there isn't something around, something undiscovered, something unknown that could get you in your moment of exposure. Irrational fear and imagination is also very powerful and this kind of thing can scare the shit out of a lot of people, even if there's nothing around for miles. Bravery is about doing something despite being afraid, the mind is more terrifying than any shark. When I was a kid I used to be deathly afraid of deep swimming pools because my imagination always played on me, that there was something swimming behind or below me when I closed my eyes, to the point where I would jump out the pool and reassure myself it wasn't real. I still feel the same fear when swimming in the ocean, except a pool is a controlled environment where you know for certain there's nothing there, in the open water its much harder to convince yourself that there's nothing to worry about. I actually have seen a black reef shark when scuba diving, the visibility was pretty decent near a small island I was diving near, and I saw it in the distance. It was a really cool experience and I wish it stayed around longer to watch it swim, but it swam off. I weirdly wasn't that afraid, it was exciting. I had my knife in my hand too in case it swam towards me and i was ready, not afraid, more ready for a fight. I'm sure if it was a great white I would have been shiitting myself, but my point is that sharks are scary for sure, the bigger ones especially so, but its the not knowing which is far more terrifying. The only thing that can really beat the unease of swimming in blue water with 12,000 ft of water below you, is a bunch of sharks swimming around you. That's the difference between the unsettling nature of the unknown, terror even if you can't control your emotions, and the actual danger of predators being near you. One is obviously much better than the other, but that doesn't mean swimming like this isn't fear inducing. But really there is an ever present danger that comes with being out in the middle of the ocean like that, especially alone. A sail boat like that, it doesn't take much for a simple trip to end in disaster. There's more than animals to fear about the ocean, and the isolation means help is far away. All this being said, I can't' imagine the abject terror of being in shark infested waters, that's fucking terrifying.

I'm not afraid of heights. I fly aircraft for fun, so altitude and the view from it is no big deal. I've swam in deep water just like that. Well not that deep, but pretty close. The perspective freaks your brain out. You know its safe, but there's just something that puts you on edge. Maybe its the nothing that does it. Still, Kudos man. Very few people get the chance, and when they do, very few jump.

Yeah at the time I don't think I was very afraid, but now that I've read all these comments I am more afraid whenever I go for a swim in deep water. Ha! Happy flying Robert!

I’ve been considering the prospect of learning to sail and hitting the seas myself. Don’t think I’d every be able to do this, though. I’d be terrified of swimming in the open sea like this hahaha.

What if a shark comes out from no where
@Routesofchange

Most sharks have been killed for sharkfin soup and the chances are slim that one would come out of nowhere in the middle of the ocean and nibble on me. It's probably more likely that you die in a car accident. Our fears are seldom very rational.

A fear many people have is of vast deep water. Even kids are scared a “shark” will get them in the deep side of a swimming pool. Out this deep and far, sharks aren’t really a major concern. You’re in far more danger on the beach, and even on the beach the chances of you coming across a shark are extremely small. Moreover, the chance of you getting bit is a small percentage of the already small percentage of you coming across the shark in the first place. The species you should be concerned about are hundreds to thousands of feet down. A shark encounter would be pretty rare out here and the waters so clear, they more then likely wouldn’t come very close. Sharks are actually pretty smart and can tell that we as humans aren’t a good food source. There’s many documentaries out of Australia where Aussie’s will sail out to the deep and purposely find sharks and then jump into the water with them with no cage. They obviously never bother the person and the person doesn’t bother the shark or entice them with bloody meat like you see with the dudes in the cages. It’s pretty interesting actually. They’ll circle and check you out like dolphins, whales, and other species might, but their instinct kicks in and they see how “skinny” we are. It’s not worth their time. Hints why surfers that get bit are in shallow ‘murky’ water and the shark stops attacking after the first bite or “bump”. We’re just not desirable to most carnivores in the ocean unless the shark is 100% desperate for anything to eat which again, is extremely rare. Sharks follow food. But anyways, it is scary at first because everything you watch vilifies sharks and the deep ocean. Like, some crazy huge Megalodon or the Locc Ness monster is going to come up and swallow you whole. Some people feel like somethings watching them when they swim in the deep ocean and get that “tingly adrenaline”. I didn’t have that feeling, but it was a little nerve racking because it’s SO BIG. But it’s really not that bad when you jump in. You DO realize just how small you are though which is a pretty eye opening experience. It’s weird that outside of the water you don’t feel that way, but when you get in and look down into the water, it’s this feeling of vulnerability and smallness. It makes you appreciate life way more. I encourage everyone to do this once, even if your anxiety is overwhelming (and it’s okay to have that anxiety). But once you do it once, you’ll want to do it a million more times.

Google the video of the Seattle girl who had her whole leg chewed off by a shark. They were in a cruise ship, off the coast of Chile I think, about the same distance from shore as this dude. Half way between Hawaii and San Francisco, is definitely not "no shark territory". That's their main route!
