Ozeki is a visiting writer at my school right now (which is also her alma mater), and she's been offering courses, so it was super cool to see her work on booktube! I haven't read too much of her stuff, but this has inspired me to get into it.

+Lacey Harvey It'd be nice having her around to explain all those koans that confound me like "What was your face before you were born?" though I'm sure she'd answer with something even more enigmatic. Darn Zen Buddhists.

Funnily enough, I recently attended a luncheon where she was talking about being a writer, and I also went to her launch party for the release of The Face: A Time Code, and I've never heard her say anything that is particularly Zen-Buddhist-y. I'm going to have to investigate this :D

I found this book in a book exchange when I was 17 when I was in the midst of a spiritual awakening and was not the catalyst but played a part in me first shaving my head, one of my favorite and most beautiful books ever written

I enjoy your eloquent, thoughtful videos so much and I am so grateful that you discussed this book. I read it last year, liked it well enough, but that quantum mechanics bit towards the end completely spun me around. I've been feeling like I missed the main point of the book - your video fixed that!

I have just returned from Canada and I can whole-heartedly agree with the unpredictable predictability of Canadian winters and weather. I've heard so much about A Tale for the Time Being -- I was sort of saving it, as if I wasn't quite ready to read it but I love your review so I will pick it up once all my library books go back. c:

Great review, I'm already drooling for the book. Zen for me is an unfinished story that began at about my age 23 when Samu Sunim, a Korean Zen monk gave a zazen session and talk at the UofT.

Fascinating review, I wasn't a fan of the book but I contribute that to almost preachy focus on Zen philosophy. I feel if I had some understanding, I might have been able to appreciate the book far more than I did. Life in a monastery would have been fascinating, and it seems talking to squirrels is good practice for BookTube.

+Britta Böhler Yikes - quantum mechanics, like zen koans just bypass the rational, sense making parts of my brain. Hope you enjoy it when you get to it. Am in the middle of your recommendation for The Carpet Makers and am loving it so far - despite it’s rather grim pacing. Thanks for the reco!

+ThePoptimist Glad you're enjoying Carpet Makers so far & let me know what you think once you've finished it! And don't give up on QM, it's mind-boggling, I know, but it raises some very interesting questions about the nature of reality. (One of the best books about the topic I've read in some time: Manjit Kumar, Quantum - Einstein, Bohr, and the great debate about the nature of reality). And finally, I started the Ozeki-book yesterday: it's weird but in a good way & I can't wait to read on. All best from Amsterdam!

I read this last year (almost everything was last year) and your zen explanation is very good. I liked it but it was sort of a buddy read with Estelle who is French and lives in Japan. Apparently there are no French maid cafes (so I'm not going there!) I have read one of Ozeki's previous books My Year of Meats, which I preferred, but the Zen quantum mechanics has given me something to think about. :)

The best review of the book hands down, I have seen so many reviews, and I have read many as well on GoodReads, but this is by far the best of them all. The quality is amazing, and the audio is really great, even though I'm writing this and watching this in the year of 2022 instead of 2016, however this master piece is timeless (the video I meant), so great work! For the book itself, is good, but god I hated the character Nao, she is a person, I would not rather to be around, and if it was not for college, I wouldn't have finished or read the rest of the book, and I'll be happy not be the person that Nao is looking for, as a parallel time being. Great Review!

Well first off, huh? Secondly. Huh? Thirdly, I actually love quantum mechanics. And this book is in the bargain section of my bookstore - so now I need to pick it up. Sounds slightly mind-blowing. And your time at the monastery - so cool and you are hilarious. Reminds me of the first pages of The Knife of Never Letting Go when the squirrels are taunting the dog. Same idea. Except of course the squirrels talk back . . . (I am still laughing )

I loved this book when I read it along with my book club! The narrative itself was hard to swallow with all the violence and abuse that Nao suffered and having Ruth's narrative run simultaneously with it was a bit disconcerting since it was a mixture of hard living on Nao's side and folks just making their lives hard even though they had loads of privilege on Ruth's end. While I did enjoy the book overall, I will say that I wasn't the greatest fan of the ending. To me, it felt as if Ozeki somewhat jumped the shark even in the realm of "buddhist zen" that she was creating with her novel. Regardless, I still think of this book periodically even though it's been two years since I read it.
@ThePoptimist
@ThePoptimist 8 жыл бұрын
+the young, the broke, & the bookish Nao’s narrative did get brutal and hard to sit with but it was diffused somewhat by her writing style - but yeah it is quite jarring when set beside the privilege of Ruth’s story on a remote island in British Columbia. I hadn’t thought about that, and how it could be perceived as the stereotypical hand wringing of a typical Western white knight that needs to be seen as a saviour. Thanks, you've gotten me thinking about it again!
@MissKriekentaart
@MissKriekentaart 8 жыл бұрын
I thought Nao's parts was great, but Ruth's seemed bland in comparison... I guess there was a point to it all based on zen philosophy, but that stuff goes way above my head :) Nevertheless, Nao's story really stuck with me, and I still think back to it now and then.
@ThePoptimist
@ThePoptimist 8 жыл бұрын
+MissKriekentaart Ruth’s story certainly suffers in comparison, she’s a first world, back to nature writer with an ecological artist husband - that’s a walking cliche but it did help reinforce the zen idea I think she’s trying to impart. But I’m just making it up as I go along anyways

If I understand correctly, Nao is equally alive and well, writing her story, and swept out to sea, depending on the views of the reader. If the loose ends had been wrapped up a bit more conclusively, it would have defeated the entire purpose of the story's message. Is my assessment close, or did I miss something completely?

I personally didn't care for this book that much. In all honesty, I thought Nao, and by extension Ruth, was going to focus more on talking about the grandmother and her religion, instead of just focusing on Nao's problems. Plus, when the quantum mechanics got introduced into the story, I just couldn't get into it. I chalk part of this up to my personal disinterest in surrealism (never enjoyed Murakami and Abe either). That being said, if Ozeki wrote a book about how and why she became a Zen Priest, I'd buy it. I think she's a good writer, but 'Time Being' didn't mesh well for me.
@ThePoptimist
@ThePoptimist 8 жыл бұрын
+Hazy Hills I’d love to know more about Ozeki’s journey to Zen priesthood - I do worry that it would be too much to take in though. My brain just isn’t wired for zen koans and it’s while I can read the words on the page it’s like a mental dyslexia. Thanks for commenting!
