Some of my thoughts after completing one of my goals for 2016: to re-read one book! I chose one of my favorites, A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki and it was a wonderful choice :]

The story was absolutely beautiful: rich, nostalgic, sad, poetic, uplifting, ethereal. Really interesting plot, compelling writing, and this book really made me think. I truly cared about all the characters. I want to read everything by this author now. Thanks

My mind is bubbling, fizzing and popping after just finishing A Tale For the Time Being this morning. I've never read anything like it before. It feels like my head is soaring through the sky with no plans to land any time soon. I also had to slow my reading of it down around the middle due to how profound it was becoming for me, and the intense beauty of certain chapters. I started chapter reading a lot from that point, taking breaks after many chapters to take a breather, to sit and think, or to sit in silence with the beauty I had just read. I connected so intensely with the mental illness moments, having gone through very similar moments myself. The book has leapt over, 'The Book of Strange New Things' by Michel Faber as my favourite read ever.

I just reread this book after a few years. I've always said that it's my favorite book and I was so impacted this time around that I got a tattoo to commemorate it.

Great video Sabrina! And yesss we need to talk about that magical realism haha 😂 I'm meant to be re-reading the Harry Potter series this year as one of my 2016 goals, but I'm really behind having only re-read the first book! So I need to catch up for sure. I'd also love to re-read Lolita, Office Girl, and American Psycho, as they're all on my favourites shelf and I want to see if they still feel that way!

I would love to re-read Lolita. I got so much out of it the first time, and I feel like there's so much more to get.

I loved that you talked about how the book made you slow down those feelings of not being productive with rereading. It's such a hard balance to read all the things and get to really know some of the things, and I'm glad to hear that by the end, your reread of A Tale for the Time Being felt worth it to you. The Fair Fight! I loved reading that last year, I did like the whole boxing thing as a premise, but on top of that it was a thrilling story and I loved how each perspective fleshed out what was left behind by the other perspectives. I would love to reread The Things They Carried with you sometime.

I would love to buddy read The Things They Carried! I've been doing a lot of buddy reads lately, so I'm a bit swamped. But maybe in October or November :] Also, I'm glad that you liked some of the thoughts that I shared on re-reading!

Hi- first time commenter, but we're friends on Goodreads! :) Though I struggle with it, I sometimes manage re-reading by reading along while my husband reads book I've enjoyed in the past for the first time -- which definitely helps me process books in a different way. I would love to re-read A Tale for the Time Being at some point, but I only read it for the first time earlier this year. Hard-Boiled Wonderland & the End of the World is a favorite I would re-read forever. I also really want to re-read The Name of the Wind & The Wise Man's Fear (waiting for Book 3 though...) and 1984--which I have always loved, but haven't read since I was 17 (curious to see if my feelings have changed on it).

I definitely want to re-read The Name of the Wind. I read it a couple of years ago, but I haven't read The Wise Man's Fear yet. I think I'm waiting for the announcement of the third book before I will let myself read the second one, just because I don't want to have to wait for the third!

This inspired me to re-read A Tale for the Time Being! Read it earlier this year, so maybe by the end of this year, I'll read it again! I'm also planning to re-read Norwegian Wood. :)

I'm reading A Tale for the Time Being right now. I'm almost 1/2 way through so I'm hoping I will start to enjoy it even more now that I'm in that 'middle section' you were talking about!

Yeah, it's the part where Nao is with her grandmother at the temple. I absolutely loved that section. So whimsical!

I'm hoping to re-read Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day sometime soon, which is my favourite of his. Thinking of finishing all of Murakami's works (I still have four long novels to go) before I start re-reading them though. I've had A Tale for the Time Being on my shelf for such a long time, I really need to get to it sometime...

I think I bough A Tale for the Time Being because of your video... I still haven't read it. I'm a bit of a mood reader and it hasn't felt like the right time yet. Also seeing your reread list has increased by TBR list :P The recent discussions around rereading are interesting. I also feel a pressure to keep reading new things. (Especially because since joining the BookTube community I've bought so many new things...) But I also see the value in rereading and being an 'expert' on your favorite books. I think Amanda talked about how our discussions would be more fruitful if we knew our favorite stories cover-to-cover, which I think is an interesting idea. School reading really doesn't encourage students to be experts. We read the text for lecture and then move on to the next novel. It would be really cool to see maybe a half semester course of a prof/class rereading a text and making it stand up to multiple readings.
@bookishsabrina

That is such an interesting idea! There are definitely things in school that I would have gotten more out of if we had been given the space. Lolita is the first example that comes to mind. I definitely don't feel like you can get enough out of Lolita based on one read alone, even if you close read the text. I've also been feeling the lack of expertise concerning my favorite books. I know I love them, but I don't remember the exact progression of events, or why precisely I loved a character or the writing style. I think it would be cool to feel really knowledgable about favorite books. I'm also all for having more detailed, analytical discussions about books here on BookTube. I think good books have a lot to offer through multiple reads, but it is difficult to work past that BookTube pressure. It is a wonderful pressure to be constantly inspired to read new things all the time, but it can get the best of me, too. I'm hoping to make a video about slowing down and trying to feel less pressure to keep up the pace with other BookTubers. It's hard to not feel like you're never reading or consuming enough.

unmanaged mischief I think detailed analytical discussions would be great! It was definitely what I wanted to do when I first started BookTubing. Although I find whenever I make a discussion video they are hit and miss in terms of engagement.(Perhaps it's because we as a community aren't rereading and don't feel confident discussing something we haven't just read.) I also wonder if the old video response feature would help with better discussion. Sometimes I don't respond to discussion questions because I feel like responding in text -- without the tone of my voice -- might not come out how I want it to. (Or I compensate for trying to include tone with excessive emojis...) But I've been thinking about how best to engage people a lot. I really do want the discussions to happen.

I also wanted more discussion and analytical based content when I first started, but didn't know how to achieve that level of engagement. I think more now than ever, BookTube is equipped for more analytical discussions. When I first started there just weren't enough people reading the same things with the same level of critical intent as I did. I still want to try making discussion videos, but it can be hard. Those are some of the most challenging videos to make, and it is disappointing when the reception is just a whisper. I miss response videos so much! I think that would definitely help with engagement. It would be so easy to respond to something in a video if it were easy to link the two together like it was a few years ago. It can be difficult to format a response in just one comment. It can definitely be nice to be able to edit, but very few people like to leave essay-length text comments and it can be difficult to keep the conversation going. I think that buddy reads over Voxer also have really good discussion potential. There, I think you could get as analytical as you want, and be able to express thoughts vocally. I think that would be a fun way to host more discussion based conversations, but in a private space rather than a public one.
@EmilyCait
@EmilyCait 7 жыл бұрын
unmanaged mischief I've never used Voxer. It seems to be the thing people use to buddy read though. Could you see something like an invitation to join a Voxer conversation for a discussion at the end of a discussion video working? Or would that just cause chaos? (I'm really not sure how the app works :P)
@bookishsabrina
@bookishsabrina 7 жыл бұрын
It might work if you had different chats for each video as a place for discussion. It would be worth a shot, at least. The only unfortunate feature about the app is if you don't pay, you lose access to conversations as time passes. But it might be a good venue to facilitate a discussion. I've only used it for small chats with 1-2 people, so I don't know exactly how it would work either.

I don't tend to reread, but this is definitely one that I would. Like you, I read it first as an audiobook, which I found to be so phenomenal and engrossing. I have since bought a copy and am interested in how the different format may alter my understanding of things.

I think seeing the kanji is definitely a fun and informative experience. It helped me feel more immersed in the text. Obviously that's something an audiobook cannot capture.

unmanaged mischief even just flipping through, I was like "Oh, that's how that looks." or "Ah! I was spelling that wrong in my head." or just appreciating things like the font getting bigger and bolder to show shouting.

Re-reading is so important. Thank you for making this video. I re-read at least one book every year. Always one of my top 5 favorites. This year, so far, I've re-read Fahrenheit 451 and The Island of Dr. Moreau, as well as Station Eleven (my first re-read of this book, the others I've read multiple times). My other favorites are The Diary of Anne Frank, The Haunting of Hill House and Of Mice and Men. I'm hoping next year to re-read Lonesome Dove.

It is such an amazing book. I watch the miniseries at least once a year (something my husband and I love to do together), and I'll admit I love the book just as much. I do have the audiobook, as well as the physical book, so this makes a re-read easier.

It's been on my radar for a long time. I know it was one of my grandpa's favorite books, which makes me want to read it. But as always, the size can be so intimidating.

Please help!! I literally just ordered this book and my pages start like this: Cover, praises page, and then page 23, starting mid sentence. Is this on purpose?? Theres no signs of any pages being ripped or cut out or anything. Is my copy just defective?? I’m looking around and I saw a reading of the book by Ruth herself, but her beginning was different, so I came here.. Please respond 🥺

That's definitely not how the book is meant to start. It seems like a printing error. I'm pretty sure the first line in the novel is "Hi. My name is Nao and I'm a time being." Or something like that.

So intrigued by The Fair Fight, since I am one of those people who loved The Crimson Petal and the White, like, a lot, a lot.

I don't want to oversell it, of course. I liked Crimson Petal too, but there was something about The Fair Fight I liked more. It could be the multiple perspectives, but I'm not sure. I'd love to talk to more people who have read both, because I'd love to see how other people feel about them together.
