I have been wondering one thing. Why do Americans tend to favor big knives over axes for splitting wood? There is no tool better than an axe for that I just don't see why a mora for slicing and an axe for chopping and splitting isn't enough.

we all use axes. But weight is a massive problem hiking and backpacking long distances. Axes just are not brought. Batoning is a great thing to have as an option while hiking. Every ounce counts.

I love a good axe but you don't take an axe on a backpacking trip. If you're only going a mile or two, sure why not. Batoning is used to replace the need of the axe and it works very, very well. It's also a fraction of the weight of an axe. Thanks Orange and Mattias for helping out.

Mora was founded in 1891. This year is their 135 Anniversary. I have been using the Mora #2 Classic for over 40 years. I have many that have been gifted to me over the years. As well, I have a couple of the Classic #2 Original which is a carbon steel core wrapped in stainless steel. It, too is a fantastic knife.

Nice video. I like it that you stuck to discussing knives. In about 60 years of camping all over the world, I have never needed to "baton" with my knife. What I really do is finer work, like food prep, carving tools, cleaning game. The smaller Mora excels at the work I actually do. If I need to split something, I'd use an axe, a froe, or a splitting maul, but who wants a ton of steel on his belt or pack.

Mine has a bit of a retention issue with the sheath, one time it attached to my belt and i bent over and the knife fell out, that scared me because if i hadnt noticed then i would have had a lost knife, havent carried it since, any advice on how to secure it?

I have the Becker BK2, the old fashioned Mora and the Mora Bushcraft Black. The Bushcraft Black is my #1 favorite knife. For bushcraft & fine woodworking chores, it's incredible. The Becker is very robust - no question about it. And I did replace the handles with micarta scales. Buy...in my humble opinion, the BK-2 is too heavy and girthy to be of any real value as a bushcraft knife. Yes, it can baton. Yes, it can chop wood. But I also have a Gransfors Bruk small forest axe which will out perform the BK-2. Because...chopping and splitting are more of an axe or hatchet chore, than a knife chore.

TheOutdoorGearReview Why not use a hewing knife for the heavier work then? A billhook or such? Or a Japanese bamboo froe or a Finnish "Hukari" or.... an American corn knife. I myself have a nice Portuguese Billhook "Verdugo", it is light compared to an axe, and the hook is very good since you can cut by pulling towards yourself.

I understand the need to perhaps be able to baton something in the wild. But if the knife are to be very efficient at it, it will not be as useful for other tasks. The question is then..would not a small hatchet be better? If you are already carrying more than one knife. And the hatchet/axe will be able to to do so much more, faster, than any knife. The Mora, is a knife that you get if you take away everything that doesn't really need to be on a knife. That is why they are quite cheap. The red color on the handle and the birch is for the same reason. Birch is durable and grows plentiful around Mora. The red color is originally from the mining industry, a waste from copper and iron production...dirt cheap!

I have several Moras and they are absolutely amazing knives. I generally say that you get what you pay for. But Moras are an exception. Cheap as dirt but unbelievable quality! Beckers on the other hand I found very disappointing. I bought the BK7 and the BK14. the 14 is a good little neck knife. I made a kydex sheath for it because it came with a smaller version of the BK2 sheath you showed and as you mentioned it is complete crap. Actually dulls the knife just by taking it in and out. The BK7 was garbage!. sorry to be blunt but it sucks. the steel is so soft that every time I use it the blade chips and rolls. If they are going to use 1095 steel then they need to do a much better heat treatment then they are doing.

First off Mora are undoubtedly the best knife value for their size and out of the box sharpness but if I didn't know that and saw this video I would totally doubt it. The "Paper Test" used to show a knife's sharpness is based on being able to cut without holding the paper on both sides of the cut. Much duller blades will still cut based on the way it is done in the video. If I wasn't already a huge Mora fan I would actually think that you were trying to make them look better than they really are. Please represent Mora well they deserve an accurate representation of their abilities. Thank you!
