Xiangyang in Hubei is a very special city, which has been the central fortress of the Chinese nation for 2,000 years in history.

Xiangyang is a prefecture-level city in northwestern Hubei province, China and the second largest city in Hubei by population. It was known as Xiangfan from 1950 to 2010. The Han River runs through Xiangyang's centre and divides the city north-south.
-------------------⭐⭐
Tang Dyansty City Tourist Attraction
-------------------⭐⭐
Located in Northwest Hubei, the town of Xiangyang is home to over 2 million people but is considered a small town by Chinese standards. Xiangyang is home to one of the best-kept secrets in all of China, a massive mock Tang Dynasty city (618-907 AD).
In this ginormous movie set tourists are free to not only explore the city streets and markets, but also have free reign to enter any of the towers, houses, palaces, and temples.
Other than being an up and coming tourist attraction, Xiangyang’s Tang city has been the location for several TV shows such as The Rise of Phoenixes and Colorful Bones as well as movies like Legend of the Demon Cat.
Tourists are free to explore all corners of the city, except, of course, certain areas closed off for filming. In these select locations, actors and extras not currently used in the scene can be found lounging nearby or eating at one of the restaurants located in the marketplace. Most of the actors are open to talking to tourists and posing for photos, as long as it doesn’t interfere with the shooting of the scene.
This extensively elaborate city is so much more than just a movie set, it transports its visitors into a bygone age of Chinese history which can only be found in movies.
What makes this city truly remarkable is that all of the buildings can be entered and explored. Unlike, fake storefronts and cardboard scenery which may come to mind when thinking of Hollywood, this movie set could be a fully operational city if it only had the villagers.
Unlike many of the other famous tourist destinations in China, this playground of ancient Chinese buildings is practically devoid of tourists. Efforts have been made to try and attract more people with advertisements in the nearby megacities, but for the time being, guests will have all of this Tang Dynasty dream world to their own.
All of the movie set’s temples, palaces, houses, and markets are built and decorated to make one truly feel like they have stepped back in time. The city even offers costume rentals for those looking to take embracing Chinese culture a step further. The local tourists can be found dramatically posing in gardens and by palace gates in their flowing Tang Dynasty dresses, bringing their fantasy of being an Empress of China to life.
While it may not be an actual 700-year-old ancient city, it is, however, a real movie set.
Xiangyang’s Tang City is one of the only places in China where you can find such a large density of traditional Chinese architecture without having skyscrapers looming in the distance. For those wanting to truly feel the romanticized China which we often play out in our imaginations, the gates to the Tang Dynasty are open.
-------------------⭐⭐
Ancient Xiangyang City
-------------------⭐⭐
It enjoys widespread fame far and near due to its glorious culture, long history, rich cultural relics and beautiful landscape. The old city site is located on the banks of the Han River in downtown of the city. It was first built and its basic layout was formed during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-24 AD).
It is recorded that the ancient city had six city gates and 4,210 crenels. During the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties, the old city was perfected to be even more spectacular.
The six city gates and four watch towers stood straight up to guard the city. The golden tiles and colored glazes made the city wall shine in the sunlight. The towering shadow of city wall was reflected in the moat. What an imposing sight it was!
Today, the existing city wall of Ancient Xiangyang City is all that remains of the Ming Dynasty. Its outer is laid by pieces of large bricks and the inner is filled by the rammed earth.
The north side faces Han River and the others are encompassed by moat whose depth is 6.6 to 9.9 feet and the widest point measures 273 yards.
There is only one city gate left - the north gate "Suo Yue" which means the lock and the key, signifying the gate's military importance. Though the rest of the city gates were destroyed, the ancient city layout and defense system can still be easily recognized.

I got to know about Xiangyang and Fancheng from watching the Chinese classic "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" on youtube. In the final years of the Eastern Han dynasty, Xiangyang became the capital of Jing Province (ancient Jingzhou). The warlord Liu Biao governed his territory from here. Under Liu's rule, Xiangyang became a major destination of the northern elite fleeing warfare in the Central Plain. In the Battle of Xiangyang in 191 AD, Sun Jian, a rival warlord and the father of Sun Quan, founder of Eastern Wu, was defeated and killed. The area passed to Liu Bei after Liu Biao's death. Two decades later, Battle of Fancheng, one of the most important battles in late Han-Three Kingdoms period, was fought here, resulting in Liu Bei's loss of Jingzhou.

I would strongly encourage those who have not yet watched the 2010 Three Kingdoms (95 Episodes 1080p) drama series to seriously consider watching it. It's based on one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese Literature (alongside Journey to The West, The Story of the Red Chambers and Water Margin (All Men Are Brothers)). It's available for free on youtube.

While much can be said of traditional Chinese architecture, it cannot match the diversity, range and the scope of the West. The legacy of Greece and Rome is not only more evident because there exist plenty of remnants to indicate its glory and impressive scale, but its influence on architecture throughout the centuries. With very few exceptions, Chinese buildings were constructed in wood, hence their perishability. Virtually all of the buildings featured here are nothing but recreations.

@@LUIS-ox1bv have a look to the majority of countries from east - southeast Asia, and tell me if the Chinese architecture isn't influential. I think you must be a little bit eurocentrist. The influence that China has had since centuries ago to the majority of asian countries it's something undeniable. From architecture to mythology, celebrations and many other things. And it just make sense because for almost 2.000 years China was the richest and one of the most important country in the world and sometimes the most.

@@LUIS-ox1bv The Romans knew how to use concrete and passed the knowledge down to the Germanic successors. I'd admit that those gigantic cathedrals and palaces across Europe look absolutely stunning. Indeed very few Chinese or East Asian buildings can compete with them in terms of grandiosity. But you should also keep in mind that Chinese architecture can still easily match the West's in terms of diversity. There are two dozen registered and complied styles of roof for single-story residential buildings ALONE. For multi-story residences, for residences of civilian use, of governmental use, of commercial use, of religious use, of the imperial households, of the government officials, etc, there are countless more styles. This is just a tip of the iceberg.
@Ivan-bg1jp
@Ivan-bg1jp Ай бұрын
@@diemannschaftweltmeister8197 It was just a stroke of luck for the Europeans since the continental shelf they belong in is hundreds of millions of years older than the China's so there are A LOT of stones and marble quarries to be found. What better material to build one's house than the one that can easily be found and accessed. Also as you dive deeper to Chinese architecture, there are a lot of complicated marble/stone creations on par with the ones on the West signifying that they could've also done some architecture with stone but for some reason, they've preferred wood. There are a lot of theories on why wood but the most prominent one would be philosophy. The Chinese think that stones are reserved for the dead for it is lifeless. And also, the Chinese idea of grandiosity is horizontal expansion for they had no concept of monotheism or "reaching for the heavens" that compelled them to choose stone in order to expand vertically.

The whole affair is merely a recreation, including the Hanfu sported by many of the women and girls. China, in fact, does not stand out, nor have a particularly sterling reputation for preserving its culture. Other cultures and countries have done a much better job at it then China. Traditional Chinese culture began its long decline before the demise of the Ch'ing Dynasty, and accerelerated throughout the 20th century. The Cultural Revolution did a lot to sweep away a lot of historical evidence of Chinese culture, and history.

Really? While the T'ang was undeniable in its unique brilliance, it was actually the Sung Dynasty, where Chinese culture matured and received its stamp of singular Chineseness. Painting, ceramics, and Ch'an, (Zen), Buddhism, reached a high level of attainment that was not to be matched afterwards.

To a certain extent, yes. Japan holds the title of having the oldest remaing wooden buildings on earth. In Nara, one can view structures which were built during the T'ang Dynasty, and like most historical edifices in Japan, very well maintained. The Horyuji Temple, and the Todaiji Temple,( the largest wooden structure in the world), present a sense of the scale and majestic clarity and balance of T'ang architecture. Buildings of such size were possible because China at one time had forests with large trees, enabling the construction of massive wooden structures. With the subsequent dynasties, buildings actually became smaller. The Daming Palace of the T'ang Dynasty, was of a size much larger and grander the Imperial Palace in Beijing.
