【Kannawa Onsen】
Kannawa Onsen is one of the eight hot springs of Beppu ("Hamawaki Onsen," "Beppu Onsen," "Kamegawa Onsen," "Kannawa Onsen," "Kankaiji Onsen," "Horita Onsen," "Shibaseki Onsen," "Myoban Onsen") located in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture.
The one-of-a-kind view of the rising steam and the stone-paved streets is a symbolic landscape of Beppu.
Kannawa is the hot spring resort that retains the atmosphere of a "TOJI"(therapeutic hot-spring) the most among the eight hot springs in Beppu. The TOJI inns, known as "kashima," and the public bathhouses managed by local residents line the streets.
The hot spring water in Kannawa is nearly 100°C hot, and the hot spring water gushes out in the form of steam. Kannawa makes effective use of this steam in various ways. Various hot spring cultures can be seen in Kannawa, including "jigoku-mushi" (steamed food cooked with steam), steam saunas (steam baths), and floor heating systems that utilize the pipes through which steam passes.
Beppu Onsen may be the best residential hot spring resort in Japan, while Kannawa Onsen may be the best hot spring culture town in Japan.
