As you said, typical Settle/Carlisle weather but it lends the line an atmosphere that it wouldn't have in bright sunshine, loved it!!

It does add a kind of remoteness to the area. Often thought I would love to work Blea Moor signal box.

Just watched all three parts and enjoyed every second of it. Your video brings back sweet memories as my wife and I rode from Settle to Carlisle and back just to enjoy the beautiful train ride. We spent our holidays in the area for many, many years and love the area so much. Your filming reflects this beautifully.

I walked the Settle to Carlisle Way back in 2018. Climbing over Blea Moor following the route of the tunnel below. Stopping at one of the air vents having a coffee, hearing a train passing below. Then climbing up to Dent station to Garsdale head to the Moorcock lnn. That day was wet and cold, but the rest of the walk was in sunshine.

Makes very interesting viewing when looked at with reference to LTC Rolt's book - Red for Danger' - and the account of the Ais Gill accident in 1913, albeit travelling in the opposite direction. Still a bleak and windswept line!

And the Hawes Junction accident of 1910. Hawes Junction is now Garsdale and the massive yard needed to deal with banking engines as well as freight is long gone - just a few traces in the sidings on the right.

If Don Coffey is unable to record sounds from the driver's cab, he often records "live sounds" from the rear cab so at least we can hear the train's "running trackside sounds". Something to consider?

Absolutely. As I said though. These were made sometime ago. Once Covid has subsided and I can get back out recording future (New) videos will have sounds.

Seems a miracle that the line was never singled.
@winco68
@winco68 4 жыл бұрын
It probably would have been singled if it had been solely used for passenger traffic. Today there are more freight than passenger trains using the route therefore double track is necessary.
@RailMart
@RailMart 4 жыл бұрын
There have been some harsh lessons learnt recently about making double track single. The cotswolds, and Aberdeen - Inverness to name but two that have been redoubled.
@winco68
@winco68 4 жыл бұрын
RailMart And another that should have been built as double track or at least given the capacity to upgrade to double track in future.... The Borders Railway. Some new bridges have been built only to accommodate a single track.

Fantastic! Thrilled to see you've uploaded parts 2 & 3. Today I "cycled" (on my indoor exercise bike) all the way from Ribblehead to Carlisle! I can't count the number of times we've been walking around the Ribblehead / Dent area, and we've traveled on that line a few times, twice hauled by steam. Great to see it from the perspective of the cab, though, especially Blea Moor tunnel. Question: when was this filmed? Winter, obviously, but everywhere looks deserted. Also, why the non-stop run? Just intrigued! Thanks again.

A great film of a wonderful line. Unfortunately you've made a goof on the last word of your opening caption. For "Settle" should be "Appleby." Not easy to change now, I guess.

D'oh. Thanks for the Spot. And yes you are correct it is easy enough to correct, but just a pain to re-render and then re-upload. Which will not be happening for a while.

Anybody know why Ribblehead Viaduct was single tracked?
@tradtrain
@tradtrain 4 жыл бұрын
The track was singled to put the track along the centre of the viaduct,by doing this it helps to keep the weight of the trains away from the outer edges.It was done at the same time as major repairs were done to re strengthen the structure.
