I didn't think any of the drawings were ugly. I love how the artstyle became more detailed though. The look became more realistic. And yeah, trees are annoying to draw. Well, trees, grass, sand and water. The hardest things to draw in pixel art, I think.

I think the pine tree should have a darker green color, as someone who lives near tons of pine and spruce trees. The earlier stages should also have more dispersed needles instead of being too bunched up (and can look lighter in color but usually don't really). Otherwise, these sprites in general look very, very good.

I really like the new trees! I think a 4th growing stage for the oak tree would make sense, given the pine tree has one and it would make it more "immersive"? I guess? I dunno the right word. I do like the branches going up on the oak tree, gives it a more "unified" look! I seen another comment about how the pine tree looks like its mid-animation and I can totally see that, I don't think you'll animate the trees (oh boy that's a lotta work) but if you decide to keep the sorta "fuzzy" look for the pine tree I'd say just try to have all the fuzz bits a little more static, like pointing straight out and not angled. Idk if I'm getting my point across at all LOL I'm trying! Either way I really like this type of video! It keeps us updated and we also get to see a bit more behind the dev logs!

those are some GOOD trees, yo could make so that the number of branches on the round one is random (like 0, 1 or 2) so there is a bit more variation, because if you had a forest of the same trees with the same characteristic (it stand out a lot) two branches it would look a bit weird

I think the final ones look absolutely amazing! I do want to say though that with the amount of detail in them it is harder to get away with static sprites. The pine tree especially looks like it is mid-animation of blowing in the wind. The bottom left corner of the leaves specifically seems like it is being raised by the wind, if that makes sense? maybe I'm the only one seeing this lol

Good video! Really shows the struggle of creative endeavors, and I like seeing how other creators solve problems like this. Only real criticism is that the title is a bit clickbaity, but maybe that's how you felt during the hassle of trying to get the trees just right, so I can't say for sure. Either way, nice trees!

If I had to be honest, while I can see what you're trying to achieve, I think the thing holding you back is that your pixel art is based off what you remember trees in video games looking like, without really understanding the different types of art fundamentals and principles that went into making /those/ trees. No matter how stylized, all those trees still take reference of actual trees, which you should do more of

I'm not entirely happy with what I ended up with, but at least it's something I feel I can safely say is "good enough". When it comes to solo gamedev, when you get to that point, the smart thing is to move onto the next item. Otherwise I'd probably never get anything finished.

Love your tree designs, but I have a small suggestion: make them have variations with very small differences (by maybe a couple of pixels, the oak trees maybe can have some branches missing, the pine trees can have different heights etc.). I love when games do that, then the trees don't look like copy pasted copies of themselves when there is a lot of them.

Omg I hope I’m note too late so here’s some advice: The last design is awesome and and I’m all here for it, but I recommend to make an in-between the big and the smaller one for the third tree that you’re making, because I can’t tell (for the pine) if it is fully grown or not Still, have you checked Pedro Medeiros’ pixel art tutorials? If not, you should, because I felt I found a gold mine It has pixel tutorial from leaves, to trees, to blood, to even ghosts and glitch effects!!

Hey Fairlii! Love the video, just found your channel a while back and binged your Gelli World videos :D I was thinking you could make the sugar sprite as sugar cubes, and also adding a crouching mechanism would be really cool, if you didn't want to throw a heavy item like the log and have it break, you could just put it down softly. My opinions: For the oak tree, I think the latest one is good, but if I were to change anything, I think maybe the leaves on the branches shouldn't just be balls? And a stage inbetween adult and baby tree would be good, like how in the original version had that. And for the pine tree, I think that the evolution looks a little... off. What I mean is the 3rd stage tree doesn't really LOOK like a 3rd stage, more like stage 2, only slightly bigger, I think if the 3rd stage was a bit bigger to emphasize its the second to last stage you know? Best of wishes and luck to your game! :)

I think that straight trees with straight branches with balls of foliage off of them are a very terraria thing. Most real trees have almost all of their branches and foliage high up in a canopy. At least the trees where I live. So I think it depends on a level of realism but also, don't underestimate the power of proportions. I think that having more/bigger foliage might look better. But also in games where trees can be grown anywhere it makes sense that they are narrower, so I understand the limitation (though it would be cool to find a way around it). And that's about all for me. Oh also: Nice voice. Very pleasant. Would listen again.
@Fairlii

I should specify: most trees of a certain type. Of course pine trees and Weeping willows have their own shapes but it's still one big thing of foliage and there aren't really any of those lonely branches a d balls of foliage.
@Kiwi-fl8te
@Kiwi-fl8te Жыл бұрын
@@Fairlii Not having branches along the middle and having a way the foliage at the top clumps together might make something interesting. Because having the very separate trunks at the bottom and middle height will still make the separation between trees very clear, but the fused foliage at the top will also look much better. The challenging part would be actually programming and drawing the foliage of trees fusing in that sort of canopy, but it would also look very cool and unique and generate/allow the player to create very pretty and cohesive-looking forest landscapes. It would essentially have the aesthetics of the trees you'd find decorating a forest level in a platformer with the clarity and functionality of crafting game trees.
@Kiwi-fl8te
@Kiwi-fl8te Жыл бұрын
To achieve this graphics-wise you'd need 4 different versions of the full grown tree sprite: -lonely tree -linked to the left -linked to the right -linked on both sides And have the trees change between sprites depending on whether they have neighbors. Would look great but it's also a lot of work that might not be worth it.
