To many, the Class 35 Hymeks were the most successful of all of the Western Region's diesel-hydraulic designs. With a power output of 1740hp, the 'Hymeks' were the only diesel-hydraulic class in the Type 3 power category, and used a Maybach V16 MD870 engine that was a development of the earlier MD650 and MD655 units that had been used in the Class 42 & 43 'Warships' and Class 52 'Westerns.' In this film we pay tribute to these reliable and robust hydraulic locomotives, as we see them at work in Somerset, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire on a variety of passenger and goods duties, including double-heading with ex-GWR Large Prairies, as well as their hydraulic siblings the 'Warships' and 'Westerns.' We see D7017, D7018 and D7076 in action on the West Somerset, as well as D7017 during her iconic visit to the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway in 2014, where she recreated the legendary 'Cheltenham Spa Express.' Included is a variety of 'Hymek' liveries, including BR Green with small panels as well as full yellow end, as well as the later corporate BR Blue. Filmed over a 7 year period, this programme shows Class 35 'Hymeks' hard at work on a variety of duties, working solo or in combination with other period traction, and is perfect for 'Hymek' and hydraulic enthusiasts to rekindle the majestic sound from a Hymek's Maybach V16 engine! #Hymek #DieselHydraulic #Trains

One of the best looking diesels ever built I would suggest, especially in the original two toned green. And the most powerful single engined hydraulic.

I love the aesthetics of the Hymeks. Some of the best looking British diesels, in my opinion. They look great in both BR paint schemes, but I think that they look stunning in the Rail blue and Yellow scheme. Their unique angled shape is really brought out by the yellow, and I love it. It also helps that I'm a fan of Thomas, and Bear was a character in the Railway Series, who was a Hymek, which actually introduced me to these engines.

Thanks for sharing, really something to enjoy! The hydraulic ones are something for the eye and the ear, especially the Hymeks with their V16 engine - Displacement cannot be replaced by anything except more displacement :-) Best regards from south Germany

I always liked the Hymeks and I agree with the comments below they were beautiful., Unfortunately I was a bit young and withdrawals had commenced before could get to see any but hanging out at Paddington and visits to Old Oak Common I managed to see 30 of them and the Irony is that the better matched BR's spec for Type 3's than the 37's.

Hymeks have a lot in common with deltics? They both carried dark green with lime green band small yellow panels, white window surrounds, and like deltics 19,20,21, roof mounted horns. They both sound great and produce lots of clagg threw two exhaust portsand are superbly styled.

They were the most beautiful diesels ever built. In their original livery they gave an idea of power without giving the pretence of being something they weren't. The split green livery with the lip in front of the windscreen was remarkable. It's a shame that they were victims of political correctness. I was lucky enough to see all of them before they were withdrawn but memories aren't all. Such a pity more of them weren't preserved.

Political correctness?? Explanation needed I think...

Perhaps you meant "politics". Well, if you worked on them under BR, that was the point. Even the USA tried diesel-hydraulic traction and it couldn't be good for all of the time. Another question is fitting them with air-brakes and ETH (electric train heating) systems. If the larger Westerns were the only hydraulics that ever received the air brakes, the modification was never straightforward.

I thank you for this video. The Hymek has always been a favourite of mine, due to the Tri-ang one that I had in late childhood. I only ever saw one in the flesh, a very grubby still-green example up against the buffers at Paddington in the summer of 1972. I was disappointed that it was not BR blue like my model, but the green paint scheme has grown on me. It's nice to see the too-few survivors kept clean and shiny as is right and proper, and also to hear them at work. One question: Why were the Hymeks never named?
