A TRICK to TAKE KNOTS out of straps, rope or pretty much anything! Undoing a tight knot can be nearly impossible but I have found this method works really well for a lot of different materials including webbing, two snatch straps tightened together and nylon rope like the type used on tents and guy ropes. Check it out!

One way to keep these knots from happening is NEVER use an overhand knot for anything. Always use a figure-8 knot instead. Figure-8 knots are much easier to untie.

My brother, I needed to use a strap that had a filthy knot in it. Mind you, it was double strap, double knot and had been underload. Now I was on the road and a strap had snapped so that's why I had to use this knotted up one with no choice. I googled how to undo it and found your KZfaq video. You bloody legend it worked, had it undone within 30 seconds of hitting it with a malette 👍 The load safe. I'm safe and so are the public. Thanks again

My sincere thanks for sharing this! I thought I'd never get the knot out of a strap used to tow my 1955 Bedford S-Type lorry (loaded with a Cropmaster tractor) out of some soft ground with a David Brown 1594 tractor. Lots of weight, lots of pulling, significant knot. But less than five minutes of work with a rubber mallet had it free. Excellent advice, thank you! John (West Yorkshire, UK).

Thanks Matt, You can always tell if someone is a motor mechanic or not when something is tight and that’s when the first thing they go for is the trusty old hammer. I also refer to it as a “persuaders “, or a “knockrometer”. I've had a seriously impossible knot in a pair of pajama pants for YEARS now and it didn't occur to me until today to look up a video on how to undo impossible knots. So glad I found this because I immediately took the pants outside and started hammering away. Glad to say the knot came undone. The fabric of the tie ended up ripping due to years of being stuck like that and washed and dried and whatnot, but I just tied the ends back on (a bit messy looking but whatever, they're pajamas!) and I'm able to tighten my pants again! Thank you for this video!!! -Eastern Sierra Nevada, California

Brilliant! I've seen similar techniques but first the (3" tow strap) was soaked in a pai of water for an hour and it seemed to improve the process. Also seen a 'dead-drop' hammer used instead of a steel sledge to prevent strap damage. Nicely done!! (I'll bet a few guys have lost teeth when hit by a strap knot when trying to slam it onto a rock - with too short a lead.

Where the known weakness in a knot hits, is 1 1/3 diameters from where the flex stiffens: the edge creates a shear plane which reflects there. Although the break can be sudden, catastrophic, it starts with a shear which has started earlier, and can be present in the rope. Inspect it carefully after unknotting, particularly when torsioning it, and consider treating it as aged rope/strop thereafter, unsuitable for life-critical loads.
