In this video I explore the role of the saints in society, my motivation for producing the short movie 'Cuthbert' and take a dive into some of the symbolism in the film's story.
A special thanks to Aidan Hart for allowing me to use his wonderful St Cuthbert icon.

Young man, I will pray that your dream of sharing the brilliance of God with so many who have lost the way, the light, the path, comes to a glorious fruition. You are a chosen son.

We really do need a warrior saint who can put to flight the temptations of the world, the demons and the flesh, "a life which by the grace of God he is now transcended". Thank you for re-enchanting us and calling us back to the Communion of Saints.

Hello from Dublin! I just watched your short movie, and really enjoyed it. More and more recently, I've been drawn to the early saints of these isles, re-reading St Patrick's confessio (his own, much more sober account of his life than the accounts written centuries later). I particularly enjoyed how in your film, St Cuthbert goes from conversing directly with his inner demons, to looking away and quoting scripture in response to the temptations. This is definitely in line with the Desert Fathers' advice, for example, in St John Cassian's conferences, where Abba Moses advises him to repeat scripture like "O God, come to my Aid, O Lord, Make haste to help me" - from this tradition comes the Jesus Prayer, which has become now a big part of my own prayer life. My own personal hero is a more recent Catholic Saint, St Charles de Foucauld, whom I admire for how he went into the desert like the original Desert Fathers. So much so that it was his name I chose to receive when I entered religious life!

Thank you for watching and for your kind comment. There is a lot of treasure to be found in the early Irish and British Saints and their example. I’ll have to add St Patrick’s confessio to my reading list! I didn’t know we had any of his direct writings. I’m sure you noticed the inclusion of his breastplate in the film. Best regards

Lovely to learn about St Cuthbert through your film and this discussion about it. I hope that you will continue with this work - knowing that it might be a while before people find you and your channel. Your generation, who have been so badly served spiritually, are hungry for these stories.

Great video and hopefully more will be made to highlight these courageous saints. Good that you touched upon the dark forces as a more tangible idea. I read Swedenborg's teachings a lot, and the concept of evil spirits are as tangible, living creations and dealt with as such. Same as they were by Christ himself.

I'm from the opposite end of the country from you, but recently stumbled across a well memorialising an old story of an Anglo Saxon Saint Frideswide/Friðuswið while walking in the woods. The village church was consecrated to her too, but despite being from nearby myself I'd never heard of her. We really do have so many saints on our island that have been forgotten, and must be aching to say a few prayers for us if we just ask their intercession.

Thank you very much for creating this. You did a very good job. My patron Saint is Brigid. I would enjoy seeing what you would create for her or Saint Columba. Both Cuthbert and Columba came from royal families and were so called “warrior monks”. I have no proof, but I believe that both were younger sons of nobility and set the precedent of younger sons going into the church to become educated and to become an offering of sorts to the church. Once again, very good job and you should be extremely proud.

I've been reading Maximus recently, and was so happy that you brought him into your understanding of Cuthbert. So optimistic, looking for the good, love of the created world.... Thank you for this, and for your work. And if you move onto other northern saints get ready for some real battles of personalities, which I'm sure you know, which will be very exciting.

Good to hear St. Cuthbert did not approve of the Norman Invasion! I had never heard that story before. I do love the story of him appearing to King St. Alfred as a beggar, and rewarding his generosity despite his poverty with victory in battle. It harkens back to the story in his own life of the traveler who visited his monastery, who turned out to be an angel and rewarded him with heavenly bread for his hospitality.

St. Cuthbert banishes the dark by making the sign if the cross in the manner that we bless a congregation at the end of Mass. However, he ends the gesture going from his right to his left, in the manner of the Eastern rites. This seems perfectly symbolic of pushing evil aside from our center to it's appropriate place on our left, dragging our right, where our good angels are associated, to our center. Not sure if you did this for other reasons or if it was just a happy mistake. Good all the same!

Thanks for these wonderful reflections, Father. I must say it was probably a happy mistake during our shoot. But then accidents are perhaps not so 'accidental' when we're dealing with these deeper things!

@@OliverMurrayYT even happier mistake, I just did some digging and learned that even the West signed right to left for the first 1000 years or so. It seems the faithful started mirroring the bishop, which reversed it. Now it's though to represent "redemptive" going from left to right vs "incarnational" going right to left. I'm not sure many people are so conscious, but I will be from now on!

Maybe it wasn’t a mistake and it was God’s hand in it? The early Irish church did follow more along the lines of the Eastern Orthodox Church regarding feast days and rites which is why there was so much turmoil when they aligned with the Roman church. I believe you are quite blessed and are being guided by God and the Saints on your beautiful journey.

Deira? What or where is that for a place? Deira crops up as a place in some of the Orthodox prayers: “…. in Deira’s great plain where the golden image was shown adoration, Thy three courageous youths despised the impious decree issued by the king. Cast into the flames they were sprinkled with dew and they cried in chant: Blessed art thou O Lord our God, even the God of our Fathers”
@OliverMurrayYT

Not sure of the prayer but in the English context Deira was an Anglo-Saxon kingdom stretching roughly from the Tees to the Humber. In St Oswald's time it was united with Bernicia to the north, forming the Kingdom of Northumbria.

@@OliverMurrayYT The prayer is referring to the golden image of Nebuchadnezzar so clearly a different place being referred to, it just struck me, that same place name cropping up twice in recent times.
