Using a newish tool from Premium Hobbies I have been able to play and get a blotchy weathered finish, typical of what we see on US Air Force Jets. If you would like to contribute to the channel.. please look here.. / nigelsmodellingbench

Oh my, i like these little templates, and the effects you created using. Ive seen naval and marine aircraft that flew for months off of aircraft carriers, they looked just those photos in the book. Off course squadron command had us repaint the aircraft once we were back on land based command. Thank for this video.

Great video mate. Was lucky enough to see F14’s being serviced following deployment many years ago. They were like patchwork, no two panels the same colour. Always said if you weathered an aircraft like the ones I saw people just wouldn’t believe just how battered they really got.

@@NigelsModellingBench my mate is coming in from Hawaii next month. He is a former S-3 driver with VS-29 dragon fires. He recently retired, but keeps close with the fleet and other naval aviator’s, so I will ask. He did tell stories of when aircraft returned to the carriers all panels were removed and checked for FOD, when replaced they piped a thick black goo round each one when replaced. On his advice a thick black panel line wash round each access port on anything 1989-2012!

Very interesting idea and looks really weathered. I’ve not seen the stencils used like that before. Usually you see people holding the stencil in one hand off the model and spraying lightly through it to get a post shaded/highlight effect. There’s a good video of Scale Model Shed using them on the Swordfish (posted in the last couple of days). I’ve used de-layered scouring pads and you get the same effect but the stencils look much easier to use … and those inifini standing sticks (all types) look so useful. Looks like I’ll be going onto Premium Hobbies to get some of those 😁

Interesting stuff Nigel. I have no experience of all this pre shading and post shading lark lol. I have seen a few examples of how other modellers do it. One guy primes the whole aircraft with black, then sprays a blotchy pattern of matt white all over. Then puts the main colour down with a light coat on top. Another guy primed with a grey first. Then he sprayed a swirly pattern with Tamiya Deck Tan, before putting down a light coat of the main colour. I am trying the white over black method on my Hornet build. I have done the white over black. But not put down a base coat of the main colours yet.
@NigelsModellingBench
@NigelsModellingBench 2 жыл бұрын
The technique you have tried is called black basing Andy. It is a wonderful process if you can pull it off. I think the end results are very similar to what you see here?

@@NigelsModellingBench Agree...Black basing and then either using a random pattern all over or random inside panels and leaving the panel lines dark before you start the light coats on top really works well. If you cover up too much you can always use the Uschi sets (I have several and they're great). Unfortunately that means I go through tons of Mr. Surfacer 1500...

I wonder if small bits of blue tack or white tack under the 4 corners of the template would stand it off from the surface a bit and ensure those soft edges.

Thank you for this one Nigel. I think this would be a very effective technique to use especially on carrier based jets that are exposed to the wearing effects of salt water spray. Cheers.
@NigelsModellingBench
@NigelsModellingBench 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely.. which is exactly what the F-14 was Allen, so I guess that's why it looks so bad. I guess the crew walking on the salty deck then standing on the airframe doesn't do them much good?

Hi Nigel, great video(again), many thanks. I made my own painting stencils using sheets of evergreen polystyrene, mid thickness. I used a soldering iron to melt the splatter and effects I wanted. I did try using plastic from notebook covers thinking it was nice and bendy but it was too hairy at the edges of the melting. a pig to clean up. in terms for the hard edges when using the splatter stencil. would it be an idea to tape post it sheets to the edge of the stencil thus increasing your masked off area beyond the spray blast but but not actually having anything stick to the model which hampers movement? worth a thought. Cheers Will

all grey jets that are matt look a mess.......... those stencils look way to small for 1/32 jets, would rather the sheet was 7 inches by 7 inches........... but unfortunately the actual jet in your photos was way dirtier, whatever the case it looks really hard to do..... it looks like hairspray chipping over black and then a wash of dirty grey........ and then another coat if need be......... but only on a cheap junk test model HA HA
