It's been a long road but the F-4 finally moves into the home stretch as weathering on the underside gets underway. Grime and exhaust soot and streaks and all that fun stuff.

I used to be in the USAF and had the pleasure of loading weapons on the F-4Ds... we used to say, seeing the US Navy jets (back in the day), was, it was the grease and dirt that helped hold their jets together... but really it helped keep the corrosion down due to the salty air/weather out at sea, is what we were told. Even our F-4 had a dirty belly, but not as dirty as the navy's lol, and a few red streaks from hydraulic fluid in a few key spots would also look good. But very good jod!

I was a “462” on Ds myself. Loading AIM-7s was hard on the knees, not to mention all of the angled drain tubes on the underside waiting to ping you if you weren’t careful.

I was inspired from your 32 scale intruder that I built a 1/48 cheap Revell A-6A and just grimed it up and oil wash than wiped down it turned out not bad. Thank you Doug.

So the two hooks that you said were tie downs or thought were tie downs, are not. Those are actually the hooks for the bridal launch system during Vietnam they used it before the catapult system was invented that hooked up to the nose gear.

LOOKS EXCELLENT, it's also nice to see you haven't spray weathered along the panel lines and rivets etc like everyone else does, highlighted yes but not sprayed too, i'll get into trouble for saying this but who cares

Great work! I would imagine that nose gear would kick plenty of grime and filth up onto the belly of the aircraft!

I think it looks fantastic. This is just my humble opinion, but what looks great in full scale ( real life ), definitely doesn’t always translate well, when scaled way down. The level of weathering you added, suggests to the viewer ( myself ), that these things were down right filthy. On such a small scale, relative to reality, I think you can go too far, no matter how exact, it looks to it’s real counterpart. That’s a long winded way of saying I think you nailed it 👌

This is a bit off subject but a couple of videos ago you made mention of the 1/16 Andy's Hobbies (Takom) Sherman and that it wasn't lighting your fire. For an Xmas project I bought the 1/16 Jeep and just started on step 1, the chassis. I noticed straight away that the kit has a completely boxed in chassis whereas the actual vehicle has mainly channel section chassis rails with some boxing at strategic points. I am totally deflated now because it means a major rework as stuff like this stands out a mile at 1/16th scale. This said the kit seems to have good reviews. I was kind of hoping for a bit of a kit bashing session over the Xmas period.

Oh man really? That's a HUGE disappointment. Probably big enough that I'll be looking at how to replace the frame.

@@DoogsModels Well having thought about it for 24 hours and cooled down a bit I think I can make an acceptable frame from the kit bits and some Evergreen plastic. What is so annoying is that it would have been so easy for the manufacturer to make a good representation of the chassis if they had done things slightly differently. It seems that easy of assemble massively outweighed accuracy. Anyway have a great Xmas and I look fwd to your upcoming videos and chats

I believe the staining you see behind the front gear bay is from the central mounted gun pod, no?. Incredible work and very inspiring.
@DoogsModels

The B didn't have a mounted gun and I don't think the external gun pod was very common on USMC Phantoms (thought it was for an F-4C/D thing). Regardless, no evidence of them being employed in the On Target! footage.

There is a product called Liquin from Windsor and Newton, its an oil paint additive that speeds up drying time and may make it easier to control your precise oil work like you were doing on the exhaust

I fly R/C turbine jets (F-16) as well as this plastic kit thing, and if we're flying from a damp runway and if i didnt wipe it off after every flight, the thing would be filthy just from the crud the wheels flick up during take-off and landing. The front gear door stay's quite clean.

Great job Matt. A question for you or anyone else who might know. In both the video footage you show at the beginning of the series and on your model the wing tips are folded up. I can see the necessity of that on a carrier, but why do it on the beach? Was it so ingrained in the Naval aviators that they did it out of habit or was there a good reason to do it in Da Nang?
@DoogsModels
@DoogsModels Жыл бұрын
Well I don't know if maybe it has something to do with pre-flight inspections perhaps, but it does seem to be a common thing among Navy/USMC aircraft. You see a lot of pics of Intruders with their wings folded on land, too.
