I disconnected the auto stop/start a few days after getting my 2017 last July. I hated that feature. The disconnect is simple and reversible. I found the instructions on one of the jag forums. Great video, Mark.

That sounds like a great mod as these Start/Stop feature is nasty and does cause additional wear, albeit small, still not ideal.

Hi Mark. Excellent points on ownership, and expectations of service. With the current state of shortages in the world, I would hesitate to take any machine in for service or updates unless absolutely necessary. As far as mileage, a couple years ago we took a 2,000 mile drive thru the mountains to BC wine country and back to the prairies with our 18 R coupe. Average was 9 litres/100 km (31.2mpg) Canadian gallon. Awesome and not babied. Finally took it out for a drive to town last week. OMG I forgot how much power it has. Just spreading the joy in this bleak time. So many smiles and thumbs up from everyone. Biggest grin was on my face though. What a car!!

Thanks Randal, you are right about how great these cars are and they almost spoil us because a person goes and drives something else, and it’s inevitable to be slower than this. Great point too on the trip and I may do a BC run this summer too for fun and sanity as we likely won’t be able to go south yet for awhile. Have a great one.

Another really helpful review Mark, good to see your still enjoying it after your first year. Just a couple of points, firstly on the loss of some of your dash data etc, had this happen to me 3 times now and the fix is as simple as disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes and reconnect, all done. Secondly -30 is something we do not get over here in Blighty but when it is winter I always use the app to start and pre warm the car, windows work perfectly. Had mine now for 4 years and still it makes me grin every time I drive it, hopefully we will have these cars for a few years yet.

Great video! I own an R convertible and I have found that it is a sheer joy to drive and to own. I think it has a timeless design similar to it's forbearer, the E-Type. Classic lines and overall styling. I grew up with American muscle cars and always loved foreign sports cars. The F-Type is a perfect balance of American Muscle and European styling. Front engine V8 and english styling. For me its perfect!

I have a 2015 , and it’s very simple to bypass the engine auto-shutoff. Simply disconnect the smaller battery (in the trunk there is a full size and 1/4 size battery). The car detects that the small battery (which is used to restart at stop lights) is dead, and so disables the auto shutoff. Had it this way for 2 1/2 years with absolutely no issues. It didn’t even throw a code about the battery.

My wife has an E-Pace Jaguar. I do love it, so comfortable to drive. The moment of changing my BMW X1 came and a couple of weeks ago I bought the F-Type. I am charmed with this car. It is a sport one, however also as comfortable as others to do a trip. I feel a lot of nice sensations. The aesthetic is amazing, every angle of the car is beautiful. So good your videos about this car, thanks

@@markholubetz I do agree. I have never expected before to own a sport car such as the F-Type. Sensations are really amazing from the first moment we seat down inside and grasp the wheel. It is like an energy running in my body. Actually there aren´t many F-Types here in Spain. People prefer to buy other sport brands such as Porsche, Mercedes and BMW. My neighbour has a 911, 380cv, the engine and sport sensations are brutal. However, I am totally delighted with the Jag, much more comfortable, especially when doing a long distance trip. As my neighbour said, it can´t be prettier. As you said in a video I am just watching, "it is not for posing"

Great review! I took the plunge and bought a 2016 F Type R w/ just over 20k miles on the clock -- took delivery of it on Thursday of last week. My wife is still trying to remove my perma-grin and needs to come get me from staring at it and sneaking peeks of it in our garage. Going wide-open-throttle in an awd vehicle with this kind of power and the absolutely diabolical exhaust note is truly an experience every car guy/gal should get to experience. We've had kind of crap weather so I've only taken it out a handful of times. It still has a California license plate on it which is kind of frowned upon in these areas. I'm getting the title tomorrow so then I can do the registration here. Then with some better weather I'll really let her stretch her legs on the wide open roads in farmland. Truly a dream car for me. Thanks for the info and advice!

@@markholubetz Thanks Mark! AWD supercharged V8. It's pretty much all black, inside and out. No chrome / silver trim. It has the "upgraded" Meridian sound system, but to be honest it's very underwhelming. I'm not sure if I need to find and tweak the equalizer (if one exists) or if the previous owners abused it and/or blew some speakers or what's going on there. The bass is nearly non-existent which is a head-scratcher at this level, not that I'm going to be bumping or blasting music at my age (43). It's got the "vision" package and I believe all the other extras -- the backup camera and collision detection are nice, and pretty much must-haves on any vehicle these days. The auto stop / start got annoying within the first 10 minutes of driving it; it's way too aggressive imo, but not a problem in sport/dynamic mode. I'm still feeling my way around it. The read-end and exhaust are what sold me, but I'm falling in love with the rest of the car. I may do a pully upgrade and modest tune at some point, but I'll keep it otherwise unmolested to keep resale up. Anyway, consider me a fan. Keep up the awesome vids!

There are four hand-adjustable hood alignment stops. The front bumper has two adjustment bolts on each side, underneath where it buts against the hood. With those 8 bolts you can get the gaps even. You can also remove and shim the bolts under the front edge of the hood to make the surfaces flush.

There are many reasons why Auto/Stop would disable itself naturally..nothing necessarily wrong with the car or system. If blinkers are on, no auto/stop. If a/c is on or max a/c is on it won't turn on If radio is blaring with a/c it likely won't turn on If its in dynamic mode it's disabled If its in sport mode it's disabled If steering wheel is turned to one side, it's disabled. If you feather the brakes it won't engage. Lastly -- the ECU learns how you drive, so if it determines you gas quickly it'll decrease the frequency of when the vehicle goes into auto/stop My M6 did the same bs. Now only way to get it to do that is to drive it is eco-mode, but honestly who drives an M6 in eco mode????? Lol.

I just added a '17 Corvette C7 Grand Sport Collectors Edition for my son. The F-Type is so much better it was incredibly difficult to buy, especially considering its about 35% more expensive than a V8 R. Compared to the Jag, quality is truly awful, shakes, rattles, absolute garbage plastics in the 3LT CE version. Performance is a joke, but I expected that. The engine's strained high RPM range (above 3K) is EXACTLY the same as my 66 Ford, althougg a little less powerful probably due to 6.2L vs 6.4L and vehicle weight. Point is, zero progress over 60 years. The auto transmission is the worst I have ever driven, ever. The F-Type TOWERS over the Corvette.
@markholubetz
@markholubetz 3 жыл бұрын
I would totally agree and the pushrod is not quite as refined in any way compared to the Jag. I did enjoy the z06 in the C7 due to 650 ponies but anything shy of the engine will leave us all begging for the top engine every time. I have a friend with a ZL1 1LE Camaro and that machine goes but that’s the drivetrain in Chevy land to keep.

No doubt the V-8 must be a kick in the pants, but the V-6, too, is a honey of a value for the performance it gives. Just discovered your channel here a few days ago (got here from SKRRT Garage). I know this is an older upload so you may not see this comment but I had the same thing happen with my Auto Start/Stop. It worked but only if you really depressed the brake pedal hard, normal braking around town did not activate the system. However, the factoy battery finally failed just last week and with a fresh new battery, the auto start/stop is working again! Not sure if this was a voltage issue from the old battery or if disconnecting the batter reset the system (suspect the latter) . As a side note, getting ready to install the Velociy AP lower pulley and tune, that should be fun....

That should be fun either way and I would love to hear your impressions once its done. Have a great one.

@@markholubetz I am going to do the upgrade myself. I restore cars and build hot rods so this upgrade appears simple enough in comaprison to most of the stuff I do. Access to the belt looks like a major pain and I have heard the one supplied is often too short? Yeah, may car was starting fine, no slow cranking or any other problem and then BAM, dead battery. It is a real pain when this happens. Cant open the doors so you need to use the emergency key. Then you still need to charge the dead battery enough to open the rear hatch (on my car at least). I am going to make sure I replace the battery on a routine schedule (as Jaguar reccomends). It would suck hard to have it fail out on the road somewhere....

Fantastic video Mark. My father is looking into getting an F-Type, but he can't decide between the 2018/2019 SVR or the new 2021 R (facelift), which one would you recommend? From what I've read online, the new facelift model fixes a lot of the older issues (including the battery issues on the older SVR models) and of course it features the new tech/design/etc.... but on the other hand the pre-facelift models have that iconic design and they sound better too (plus much better pricing thanks to depreciation) - seems like a tough choice.
@markholubetz
@markholubetz 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, thats a tough one because the new ones have a slighter better suspension tuning, the upgraded power of the older SVR, and in my opinion the rear splitter is a bit nicer on the new car. The digital dash is an acquired taste and cool when new, but I suspect yet one more electrical item to potentially go and may also not show as clearly in bright light with reflection as I notice with the centre screen now. Both great cars, but I personally would go SVR as I like the older lights better, the fender design is a bit more unique and the SVR may have a bit better value retention with time.

Really enjoyed the video Mark. Very informative and thorough. You even answered my question before I got to ask and that was what car do you prefer, your F Type or the Lambo. Your analogy of the hot girl next door explains your sentiment succinctly. I do use mine as a daily driver. I've had mine for about 8 months and although the indicator light for brakes hasn't gone on, I drive pretty hard and anticipate that I will need to do some maintenance in that respect..I just passed 40k miles and these are the original brakes. Would you use the local Jaguar dealership for this or better to go the route of an independent mechanic. Having had the vehicle for 8 months snd I was also thinking of having them do some sort of inspection/service as I have done nothing since I purchased it, orher then some air in the tires and of course weekly washes. Anyway, thank you again for a great video.

Great to hear from you again Kevin and yes that’s true these cars are amazing are seem to be reasonably dependable. As for maintenance, driving a car with warranty, I generally go to the dealer for all work because even though costs may be a bit higher, if a person goes I dependant, that may be an excuse for them to refuse warranty repairs, maybe not so much for brakes, for generally speaking. Once warranty is over I still believe in shopping competitiveness for pricing because I have had some experience in the past where surprisingly, the dealers are often hungry as well and sometimes even offer better pricing. I develop loyalty over time .

As far as that auto off feature, I’ve noticed that it wouldn’t come on also in my 2020 GMC Sierra… What I’ve found is that if you have too great of an electrical draw going on, this feature won’t work… Such as, if I have my sound system blasting and air conditioner going, this feature won’t work… Actually, I’ve found if I just have the A/C on by itself, this feature won’t work… It all depends on the electrical draw, I believe it’s a “safety” feature so that you’re battery won’t drain due to the many things that could draw electricity… If I have my sound playing maybe mid way, no A/C or anything else, that auto off feature works… 👍🏾👍🏾

After selling my 1999 Ferrari F355 spyder F-1 (28000 miles) to buy a Jaguar F-type R I just laughed when Mark mentioned the problems he had with his Jag. i have spent more than 3000 a year fixing the Ferrari not counting the 7000 dollar service every five years. I never knew when I started it how far it would go before something went wrong. And something went wrong every 3-6 months. It was beautiful, sounded great, fun to drive but it was crap mechanically. If I only have the problems Mark has had, I'll be thrilled.

Haha true Nick, I have many friends with older exotics and even one with the same Ferrari and I remember the f1 pump went out, one word ouch. Also the clutch was a pricey one and can’t forget the regular services. The more recent F cars have gotten a bit more reliable but certainly not inexpensive to own. These Italian exotics are a committment and even my Gallardo had its moments but putting it in perspective, the F Type is a hard core performer that is what I would call reasonably reliable. How are you enjoying the Jag?

Once you drive and own a Jag, you are done for as nothing else can come close other than an Aston Martin. Owning a Jag is a love affair as they are such gorgeous eye candy and so slick and such great driver's cars. Every day in a Jaguar is a great day. You only really know how head over heels you are when you have to get service and go without the Jag for a day or a week. Then you are in withdrawal and the addiction is realized.

Indeed, there is your life before owning a Jaguar and then there is your life after owning one, and you find yourself asking how it was that it took yourself so damn long to finally get it right and get a Jaguar. I have never felt this way about any other car, but truly, the greatness of the Jaguar is addictive. I really don't know what I would do if a tree fell on mine or it was totaled in an accident given that there are so few new Jaguars on dealer showrooms these days and used low mileage off lease Jaguars are getting rarer and pricier than ever as people keep their vehicles rather than turn them in for another brand. There are literally almost no deals to be had on Jaguars any longer as the prices have risen as have the miles and the age of used inventory. Summer 2020 was the last buyers market for new or used Jaguars. The combination of great design and style, eye candy looks, comfort and performance is like heroin.

Historically I have driven american muscle cars, specifically Mustangs. Should I take the leap in your opinion?

Great choice David, personally I would, but I also know that I have a higher risk tolerance than many people as I have owned a Lamborghini, a BMWE60 M5 with the V10, several BMWs and Porsches. Hi Robert, I do prefer a manual, if I could get it, but I really wanted the V8 car and prioritized accordingly. Without a doubt, if a manual could get teamed up with the R, thats the car I would drive and likely go another step further, RWD, if I lived in a warmer climate.

Hi Brad, I would say they are both great options and the awd was better for me because of the potential to snowy drive but the Rear wheel drive would be a great driver for a warmer climate. I do like how the awd car you can mash the throttle and the translation is pure acceleration and little wheel spin so it pulls hard out of the hole. Either way, if I lived in SoCal I may have leaned a bit to the RWD as things are a bit more animal and also one less component to worry about for maintenance.

Hi Mark! The auto stop/start function stops working when the battery is not at its 90-100%. Your battery is now 3 years old? Maybe its capacity will have decreased... Mine is a SVR MY 2017, and the auto stop only works after long drives (2-3 hours at least) and the battery is fully charged. The electronics of these cars are very sensitive to voltage changes. The car may start showing random failures if the battery is not at its best.
