Yeah, it doesn't really blow me away. I sold my EOS-R last week to see what to get next. The A7SIII I like because of smaller file sizes especially and very good video quality. But that 12 MP is sooo limiting (as a hybrid shooter) I would have to spend another $3k on a good photo camera. The R6 has better IQ than the A7SIII (lower noise (shocking), slightly shaper), but the file sizes are big and there is the heating issue. 20 MP seems a bit low to me (coming from 30MP 5D and R) as well. The A7RIV looks great all around, especially for the price, but the high ISO noise for photo isn't great (lots of shadow noise) and the video tech, while great, isn't cutting edge. R5 is a great balance at 45MP with industry leading video, but the video file sizes are massive and there are the overheat issues.

@@77dris I wouldn't call it "industry leading video" with the overheating issue. But the R5 is a good stills camera.

Let me put it this way, this is a video camera with shit stills. R5/R6 is better for stills but have limited but good video. No IBIS. The price, R6 is cheaper. If you going full video, this is ur camera... but if u need stills or hybrid, r5/r6 is better. If this was priced at r6, this definitely beat Canon. Exceed expectation? Overheating as well. Seems really bias review especially when you straight out compare it to Canon. By the way, i have use Sony and Canon, each has its strength n weakness.

Honestly, in every video I've seen of this camera, I've been really disappointed with the video quality. It's kind of soul crushing because I woke up early to pre-order it. It just feel really muddy, and lacks any pop. I love the auto-focus, but man, I really wish the images looked better. The specs seem great ON PAPER, but in actual reality, for pure video, the blackmagic cameras look better to me, the S1H looks better to me, and even the R5 looks better to me. This camera just really doesn't have that "wow" factor at all. Like if you showed someone footage of it who had no clue it was a brand new A7S3, I doubt they would be blown away by it. But I do love the Sony system and I do really admire how great that auto-focus is. I just cannot get hyped. Really wish the FX9 costed just a little less.

@@renestaempfli1071 Don't forget A7s3 also has overheating issue when shooting 4K120 outdoor as mentioned so many reviewers. "Industry-leading video" capability I guess is on the resolution "8K". A7s3 has no 8K is a fact, and many 8K sources produced by R5 users are sharing all around. A7s3 has great improvement as Sony mirrorless camera has many problems that need to be fixed, like response of touch screen, no flipping screen, etc. So, A7s3 is definitely a good choice for Sony users if they don't mind it can only take 12MP photos.

Well, I feel this camera will be giving tough competition to BMPCC6k (bcz that's the only camera under $3k, which does the video best) That would be the most anticipated comparison every video shooter is looking up to. Of-course both of them has its pros and cons, but many will be curious to know who produces better looking and more cinematic image.
@James-xm4ki

A lot of people are sleeping on the BMPCC6K. Honestly, from what's been released so far, I really think it puts out a way more cinematic and pleasing image than what we've seen of the A7S3 so far. And BRAW is amazing to work with.

@James-xm4ki 4 жыл бұрын
@@adeadolfo I actually completely agree with you on that. As someone who uses multiple brands, Sony and BM included, the lack of autofocus is tough on shoots when I'm using the Pocket 6k. There are many times when I've had to sacrifice the image quality of that camera, just to switch to another camera with better auofocus, especially when I'm doing gimble work. It's the biggest downside of the 6K. I've had the same issue with the S1h, which also has an amazing image, but can't autofocus in those clutch situations.

BM colors and DD is very good, but battery life is too disapointing, you have to use something like V-mount batteries and external Monitor with cage to get similar record time and usability. BUT lens + v-mount + monitor + cage = about 1,5-2kg vs 1kg with Sony. Out of the box A7s3 is much better than BM 6k. And there is no ibis and autofocus, so you have to be much more carefull while shooting. + You dont need a big gimbal for sony. And sometimes shooting without AF with gimbal is not a good idea. So Sony provides more options to shoot than BM. If you need internal RAW - BM is the only option, if you want also shoot stills - A7SIII is the only option. Sony also has FF sensor and better LOW light perfomance, but that can be pros and cons in some situations.

This will probably be the end for the Panasonic gh video dominance and become the go to camera for any serious independent video shooter. Canon still has the hybrid space, but the wind has gone out of its video sails. Glad to see sony gave canon a few weeks to fill its preorders before adding to the confusion. It's been an amazing year for camera technology

I'd like to see a comparison of the A7sIII Vs the A7III because of the oversampling from the A7III. You already showed some short clips and I'd like to see more. Gerald Undone showed that it seemed sharper and more detailed on the A7III because of the oversamplr, but he only had a short capture of it for us. Would be interesting to see if there's really such a big difference, how the Colour varies from 10Bit to 8Bit and how the improved color science looks in comparison. The A7III is probably one of the best known Sony cameras and therefore the best comparison.

Over all the Sony is a solid prosumer camera, but by pushing the temperature envelope it risks variation in sensor performance which the “active white balance” would likely be created to address in part, but that has its limits and the color rendition could be impacted in unpredictable ways. I suppose this is the trade off and differentiation between cinema/broadcast and prosumer video. Some of the variations I’ve noticed would be time consuming to fix in post and when recording with the Atomos it appears to be less of an issues as expected.

Hi Max It does overheat. I watched Dan Watson and he lives in Florida and he tested it outdoor (Sunny over 95'F) and it overheated after 23min. Here is the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pbSAarNjs77KaXU.html Ironically, R5 overheated at 30min. Panasonic S1H did not. So, please before you say it does not overheat, do a proper overheating test. Indoor, yes, it does not overheat, but that's the same with my Sony a5100 (when I hooked up to my external monitor and AC dummy battery). It will overheat DEPENDS on the condition you set it. If everyone worries about overheating they should get a proper cinema body camera like Canon C300 or Panasonic EVA1 or Sony FX9.

Max. Great review, as always---clear and concise. I just have one question for you: how is the peaking feature now? It's been horrible in the past. Have they improved its look and accuracy. As a manual shooter that's REALLY important to me.
@EugeniaLoli
@EugeniaLoli 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, as I've been saying for a lot of time now, but except you, no one has mentioned: people SHOULD NOT be recording 10bit 4:2:2, they should be recording in 10bit 4:2:0. The 4:2:2 requires 20% more bitrate, and in 24p, Sony does NOT give you that extra 20% of bitrate (it's 100mbps no matter what you choose). Because of that, shooting in 4:2:2, you LOSE quality, for something (better chromasampling) that is NOT visible with the human eyes. On top of that, of course, there is no GPU support for 4:2:2. So yeah, it makes zero sense to shoot in 4:2:2 under these circumstances (if we had GPU support, and we had more bitrate, sure, go for it). At least Sony lets you choose between the two, Canon does not.

I have been trying to figure out which to use 420 10 bit vs 422 10 bit. in my tests I do notice that the 420 seems a bit darker in the shadows, whereas 422 seems flatter. the 420 does seem like it has slightly more detail. I guess I just notice a difference in the overall tonality of the image. I shot 10 bit 422 in all codecs and the tonality all match, however when I shot in the 10 bit 420 the image seems more contrasty but again a tiny bit more detail. I am stumped on which to choose.

Here you go. Keep in mind at the top where it says up to 120P and V60 required that is V60 require if you're doing 4K 120FPS and the bit rate is 200Mb/s (or 280Mb/s for 10 bit) If you're going to do 4K up to 60FPS you only need a U3 card (or V30). even if its the same 200Mb/s that the 4K 120 uses and it "needs" a V60. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1LNN9hvpvVEAQifD-1UDs2EubGvvt9i4W?usp=sharing

What I always say about SONY. They are always giving the best for the lowest price. For instance, compare a CANON 1DX mk3 $ 6500 DSLR to this little monster of $3500 IT IS INSANE. I know comparisons of this two are not fair in terms of gear, but just compare VIDEO specs and CANON stills your money like hell. I know I would have to compare CANON R5 which is still more expensive but equal in terms of technologies, BUT this is the last product from SONY giving everything a videographer needs in a small package. Well done by SONY and the market will receive this hit making all prices down.

It's basically the perfect hybrid video camera for right now. It's just robust and does what it says on the tin. Which deep down is what we want. We're at a specific point in time where most people still don't watch stuff in 4k but want the flexibility of 4k. Maybe in a few years, everything will be 4k so we'll want these features in 6 and 8k. But until then this just seems to hit every general need with hardly any compromise. Whereas Canon doesn't quite pull it off. Almost but not quite with overheating and various quirks that make it not appealing to a professional videographer like myself. Sony used to suffer from this but people wanted mirrorless and 4k so much so they could put up with the quirks. Whereas no one is really asking for 8k in a hybrid camera, and actually just want it to work every time with no ifs or buts.

They hit so many high points here, but I wanted that FS5 ND filter so bad. That would have set it apart from every other mirrorless out there. I guess we'll have to wait for an FX6 (or whatever the FS5 replacement will be). Too bad for those of us that actually prefer the mirrorless form factor. Solid 1080 240 and 4k 120/60 that is detailed and long-running with continuous AF is a huge win for the A7s3 tho.

@@MaksimYuryev I guess that makes sense. If theyd traded away IBIS for ND people would have freaked. Once you've used auto-ND tho it's real hard to go back to variable screw on NDs. It's about the only thing I was hoping for missing tho so I guess I can live with it.

Great review Max, can't wait to get my hands on this sucker!! It would be awesome if you could do a really in-depth test comparison of 4k 60 and 120 fps in various codecs/bitrates/bit-depth and how the performance was when editing all that footage in Premiere Pro. I'm very curious how the new XAVC HS codec compares with the XAVC S-I and whether there is any real world advantage to using the much higher bitrate one. Also how does H.264 10-bit compare with H.265 10-bit. Thanks!

I think the Canon is the way better allround Camera. If you are a hybrid shooter or a photographer the Canon is the way to go. Vor Videomakers only the Sony is the better tool. Both have there Problems. The Resolution of the sony is to low for most photographic use cases. And the Canon is annoying if you to long videoclips and log movie projects. I will go with the Canon R5 because i am mostly a Photographer. For me its about 90% Photography 10% Videography. Most of the time even less. In my Studio i need resolution, good lenses, skin tones and image quality. And i think in most of the points the canon R5 is way better. But it depends on your use case.
