@@aaanton11 One thing I'd suggest to people who are struggling to get the strut in to the hub carrier... don't push down on the hub carrier too much, you could part the CV inner joint...came a little close today :)

Nice video. A hint for next time. With the bolt removed, spread the hub carrier slightly using a large screwdriver. That will make it way easier to dismount and mount again :)

Good informative video. Good to know about the markings for bottom of coil spring, the marking on the bearing and then the direction the top mount itself points inwards towards the engine bay. Looking to do my shocks all round on my MK3 Focus over Christmas. I purchased the "LASER 3396 Strut Nut Tool Set 2 Piece 1/2"D // 5mm x 60mm & 5.5mm x 47mm" on eBay. You turn this 90 degrees in the back of the knuckle which makes it alot easier to take the strut out and then put back in.

you have to spread the knuckle with either a chisel or with a socket designed for this, so it won't be that tight pushing it down. the tool 'Suspension Strut Spreader Socket' doesn't cost a lot.

Spot on video,I’ve recently had the top mount bearing replaced(it was making a creaking noise),but since it’s been replaced I’ve got a thud when reversing off drive or bumping up kerb,also car is rattling when driving over the slightest of bumps(near side front)mechanic has had a look and said everything looks ok and to get another suspension leg?

Very interesting. I watched as I am having to have both done on my focus st and was curious to see how it was done. Best left to the professional! Mine have both snapped at the bottom in the same place. Still holding just with less support at the bottom. Not sure I would have noticed unless the garage hadnt pointed it out.

Thanks again (the Mondy Mk3 one was good). Having done a few of these now I can offer the following 'insights'. If you don't undo the bottom ball joint the angle/pressure on fit (for removal and insertion into the knuckle) is wrong and hence needs all that faffing about with mallets/rams etc. If you open up the pinchbolt clamp gap by gently inserting a tapered cold chisel into it tapped from below, life becomes much easier...assuming the pinchbolt comes out intact that is.

Just followed this, very good but did encounter an issue when putting strut back in. On the way out I must have pushed too hard on the hub carrier downwards and managed to pop out the drive shaft. could not line up hub and strut when reassembling. did manage to get shaft back in place, then it was a snip. also when pushing strut back into carrier a gentle ease opening the jaws between the pinch bolt with a large flat blade driver helped, it dropped in without too much hammering. remember only to ease and not try and force open. Thanks for the tips and keep up the good work.

My Sealey spring compressors av served me well. Nothing special, but they are the double hooked type at each end. Being a driveway warrior they serve me very well. I do not do enough springs to justify the outlay of a more expensive compression set, ie in a cage or the hydraulic type. BUT yes, the Sealey ones do the job, & are definitely safer than the single hooked type. In my VERY HUMBLE OPINION 😉😉😉😉 Thats my two pence worth 😂😂😂 Stay safe. Alan

Hi Aanton, I have the same (widow maker !) clamps as yours, made by Draper so they are good quality but I get very anxious when using them. Next time I have a suspension job, will invest in a different type, you cant gamble on safety. Will be interested to hear what ones you go for & if there any good.

Hi Aanton. Thanks for video. Just wondering why you didn't remove hub carrier together with strut, then no need to remove pinch bolt?
@aaanton11
@aaanton11 4 жыл бұрын
for me its all about removing as little as possible, to remove the hub carrier means removing the brakes, calliper, abs sensor wire, possible damage to the bottom ball joint, but there's no set rules, go with your gut, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
