Never thought I'd see it; Rip embracing new technology. It's only a block of wood, but by next year, maybe it'll be two rocks that when rubbed together create a spark. And the year after that, maybe it'll be something resembling a wheel. I can't wait to see the evolution unfold.

Too late, Rogue has already started producing the Power Block (US patent pending) and they aim to sell them for 100 bucks a piece. They recommend using two, one for each knee. Their Black-Friday deal will be 2 blocks for the price of 2. Made in the US. Every homeless Spotted Owl will be compensated by a new home for every block you purchase.

For everyone freaking out in the comments, keeping your knees behind your toes is something for the starting strength style low bar squat. It is necessary because you need to engage more posterior chain when the bar is lower on your back. If you squat high bar then knees going past toes is fine because the bar position does not require a much hip hinge as the low bar position
@AT-vc3kz

If you have shorter tibias relative to your femurs, your knees might still travel forward of the toes, even in the low bar squat, right?
@Russocass
@Russocass 3 жыл бұрын
That's not true. It's on the book. Different proportions will give you different knee positions but most will be "near" the toes. I don't remember the quote but that's stated after the part that talks that knees over toes isn't bad for the knees. Even this video has knees over toes, slightly.
@BroadsideLock
@BroadsideLock 3 жыл бұрын
@@Russocass I never said knees over toes were bad, just in general the anthropomorphic need for knees over toes if going to be much less in the low bar position, and much higher in the high bar position. How early in the descent should the knees contact the wood? Halfway down? I think I have long femurs relative to my tibias so it doesn’t seem like my knees are set in their forward position until pretty late in the descent.
@Hast91
@Hast91 3 жыл бұрын
2/3 to halfway down. Forward movement of the knees in the hole kills some of the stretch reflex coming from the hip because it makes the back become more vertical and thus opening the hip angle. Same with back angle. Set it about halfway down and dont let it change untill you are at the same spot in the ascent, making you lead with the hip out of the hole "staying in the hip".

If your body is that different squatting won't be for you. You can still do it but should not go crazy.
@Xplora213
@Xplora213 3 жыл бұрын
The back angle is created by the knee travel. Rip wants you to squat with your hips as the dominant muscle group, not your quads. It really doesn’t matter too much. If your femur is crazy long, you will be more vertical in the torso. It really doesn’t matter too much though.
@TwistyThreeFifty
@TwistyThreeFifty 2 жыл бұрын
Longer femur will result in a more horizontal back angle. This isn't a bad thing. Sometimes the trainee will prefer having a wider than normal stance to negate their long femurs. This is OK too, as long as depth can still be achieved, with a wider stance.

Is this something's that's changed over time? The Starting Strength book says the position of the knees can be behind the toes for people with short femurs, but it can also be "3 or 4 inches in front of the toes, with long femurs and short tibias". Or is this more of a case, in general don't let your knees go past your toes, but for some people it doesn't apply?
@JasonTurk
@JasonTurk 3 жыл бұрын
Rip didn’t say don’t let your knees go past your toes. The TEBOW is to be used as a guide. The distance of the block from your toes will vary depending on your anthropometry. A half-inch or inch out is a good place to start. Find the distance that gives you the proper back angle and depth.

Human femur and shin lengths come in all sizes though, and the ratio of length between the two is never the same. So why are we limiting shin angle to try to force the correct back angle? I think the lifter needs to get better hip/knee/ankle mobility in order to keep their back angle more constant in the squat. This "TUBOW" doesn't seem like a one size fits all solution.
@Russocass
@Russocass 3 жыл бұрын
The tubow should be located in a place specifically calculated for the individual. The problem that the tubow prevents is excessive knee sliding. Search that last term on youtube, there's a good video from this channel about that.

Astonishment that people would be stupid enough to pay that for a block of wood, and admiration for actually being able to convince people to buy it. And no, Rusty, I wasn’t advocating stealing from a construction site. They throw away scrap lumber and, if someone were really broke and felt that they had to have a “tubow”, they could use a scrap 2 x 4, instead of your 2x12 prototype. I would think that most any piece of wood that has a flat end could be used in a pinch, a 2x4, 2x6, 4x4 , etc. If I ever need mittens and ear muffs sold in Hawaii, you will be the folks that I call.

@@robertthompson5501 He is absolutely fit, no doubt. I'm not insulting him by saying that he isn't strong. Is he strong compared to a nonathletes, sure. Is he pulling 600 lbs off the floor? Nope. Is he squatting even 405? No. I'm not shaming him, because he doesn't train to do that; those aren't his goals. I wish him only personal and professional success; I wish the same for his clientele. As a 5'8 50-yr-old who has never particularly cared for basketball, I don't care if my vert is 40 inches or 10. There's a much higher demand for normal folks trying to get stronger than for athletes trying to improve their vertical jump. It is impossible to compare his training modalities and outcomes to Rip's / Starting Strength's. KneesOverToes is based on the strengthening a range of motion that most people do not even use. In that context, "strengthen" means to develop some strength where there was none; it does not mean to train that muscle over time to produce the type of strength to move heavy objects. Starting Strength's objective is (to quote Mark Rippetoe) "to get you stronger than day-old piss." No "bulletproofing" your joints, no improving your vert. The only outcome Starting Strength promises is that you will be stronger and that they believe their way of training novices is comprehensive, the simplest and the most efficient. I am always impressed by athletes. I'm not hating on KOTs.
