Rip, just wanted to put this here. About 3 months ago I started the novice program and hired a SSC (Joe Jaloszynski). My squat started at 275 x 3 x 5 and deadlift 285 x 1 x 5. Now I’m deadlifting 405 x 1 x 5 and squatting 370 x 1 x 5. I’m now in the early phases of the intermediate program as I did some lifting before I found out about SS. What I want to say about this is that I have never seen this kind of progress before, and believe me I have tried so many different programs it’s not even funny. I have also had the misfortune of many shitty strength coaches both in high school football and college football. As a side note, and I know you’ve discussed this many times before, I do not understand how a D1 strength coach can be employed if he teaches the deadlift by pulling the bar off the floor by retracting the arms and keeping the rest of the body still, and then executing the rest of the pull... but whatever that’s the past! So I just wanted to say thank you so much for making this program, I know it may seem like just a job to you but you have no idea how much this program means to me and how accomplished I feel because of it. I plan to continue to focus mainly on strength training for quite a few more months probably until I want to put more focus into my BJJ training to apply my new found strength. Again, thank you and all of your staff for Starting Strength!!

Good wine can be made at home it is just a long drawn out process much like mead and other high alcohol brews it just takes more time to clear out the unpleasantries. A homemade wine doesn't start to taste good until about 3-4 years or longer (imo) but maybe OK earlier if you have your variables dialed in. You also need to be using the right kind of yeast not fleischmanns bread yeast which is a bad idea for apple cider to begin with (as an experiment it would be fine, just don't expect good to be apart of the equation). If you want to make a starting cider right google "Apfelwein recipe" and follow the recipe and time on homebrewtalk.com or elsewhere. The yeast vendors have all varieties of wine yeast available for the homebrewer so the misconception that good tasting wine cannot be made at home is inherently false. And not all wines are made via the yeast on the skins, while a very formal way to do it, it can lead to some disastrous results. Especially if the vineyard is trying to reproduce the same product over and over again. Most likely they would have a variety of yeasts on hand, some commercial, that are cultured in-house that are used to elicit the the flavors they are looking to produce in their wines and are pitched once they process the grape juice.
