About battery terminals and cable clamps, always clean them to bright metal and apply a simple, basic unfilled wheel bearing grease BEFORE clamping back together. What this does is prevent moisture and oxygen seeping into the tiny spaces between battery post and clamp, which is where all corrosion begins. Excess grease is squeezed out and can be wiped off when done. I've been doing this for over 40 years and check annually, the posts and clamps are always still shiny.

IT's running rich, that's for sure, carb needs tuning, but wicked find on that old square body, and I'm not even a Chevy guy. Would love to see a restoration on this one

@@deanlindholm8663 Those old Quadra jet carbs are ok but so few around anymore. Perhaps you can find a you tube video that shows how to rebuild one? I have no doubt you are capable.. just need some guidance. If you do decide to tackle it… replace the float (they are sealed foam and often start to absorb fuel when they get old, causing them to not float so well which will make run rich). The biggest problem is the old fuel has gummed up the carb. First thing is to get that old fuel out and new fuel in. When you do that add a bottle of “dry gas” also called fuel line anti freeze… it will remove any water in the tank from condensation. It also might be wise to remove the tank and clean it out… you may find it is really horrible inside… and might even be worth getting a new tank? Looks like a good old truck… well worth fixing. As for the valve tapping.. you can dump some Seafoam additive in the oil.. this will clean up the inside of the engine… and might get the lifters working better? Then change the oil and filter (use 5-30 oil) … Good luck… (old mechanic, signing off… 😁

​@@JoshuaTrengethat's not a qjet carb. Qjets are great carbs and work very well off-road for those that have a little carb savvy. Even knowledge Ford guys use them in their off road rigs. Agree with completely draining the tanks and starting fresh.

My first vehicle was a 1975 Chevy truck with the 350. One of the owners before me removed all the emissions stuff and put a street cam in it, but the rest of it was stock. I don't know how many times the odometer turned over but I couldn't afford to drive it much. I clocked it at 4 mpg. It was pretty strong, though.

Correct. It's called thermac air. Tube from exhaust to bottom of air cleaner flapper valve to shut off incoming cold air.

The "heat stove" was tin next to the exhaust, piped to the breather, and necessary at times to prevent cold damp air from icing up the venturi and killing the engine, 5 minutes later engine heat would melt that ice and you could run again.

Yup looks and sounds like what you described, Should change oil and add coolant before driving. Us old guys know that changing all fluids is a necessary duty. You have no idea how old the the stuff is.

@Kneemako to be fair, I'd drive it down the hill to the shop with no or low coolant in the radiator. In this case, it's no more than a quarter mile at most. If I wanted to keep it, I would do a complete teardown anyway. Valvetrain components, distributor caps, water pumps, starters, and ring gears are usually the first thing to go on those old low hp GM small blocks.

True, with a bit of TLC and a makeover he would last another 40 years at least, would make a good work around the ,farm truck for sure. 40 years old, made like a tank, no plastic on him, couldn't be a better resto project than that, there's gotta be parts still around even if they are second-hand or refurbished, just make sure that the old boy doesn't die.

That was real gas back then, you may have to get non ethanol fuel to run it, That engine may have required leaded fuel also.@@AmbitionStrikes

Know anyone interested in a 1982 GMC 3500? 2WD dually with a flatbed. 3:55 rear end with a 700R4 and a rebuilt 1990 350 with TBI. Runs but been sitting a while. The TCC seems to be stuck. I drove it to where it is but when shifted out of park it dies just like the torque converter clutch isn't releasing. I was working on it with my father before he died in 2018.
