We explore an abandoned millionaires mansion.
One of England’s most neglected hidden gems, a heartbreaking memorial to a once grand mansion house.
Irreplaceable architecture and period features fall further into decay and remain at risk to robbery and vandalism.
It all began in 1704 when a politician bought the land to build his family home, the Molyneux family resided here up until 1772, it was then acquired by the county’s high sheriff who commissioned architect Robert Adam to remodel and expand the mansion.
Robert Adam was one of the most important British architects and the interior of this mansion is the finest example of his work in Northern England.
His portrait hangs in his signature octagonal room, its a privilege to see his exquisite work in tact and we are thankful it has remained so for this long.
It passed through a number of wealthy hands over the years.
Its purpose changing multiple times, from residential into a hydropathic hotel in 1912, an army hospital in the 1950s and a private girls school in the 1970s. Finally, after being abandoned for a short while when the school moved out, a local man saved it from demolition in the 1980s and spent over £100,000 in refurbishments, which resulted in it gaining a grade I listing.
The impressive wood panelled dance hall and tapestry room contain a number of classic paintings and a collection of portraits of the former owners.
Queen Ann sits proudly above the fireplace.
Most originals have been relocated to the art gallery but replicas adorn each wall, this room boasts a large King George III above the fire and the impressive Canterbury Pilgrims by William Blake dominates the west wall.
The freemasons used the hall up until 2006, three lodges survive upstairs with the Mason's Marks on the plaster ceilings.
The mansion was sold a final time in 2006 to a company with plans to turn it into retirement flats, 15 years have now passed, no progress has been made on the building and it has been left to decay further, a classic case of investors wanting the land and not the listed building, the sad case for so many of them.
It’s uncertain what the future holds for this crumbling piece of history, the decay since our last visit has spread and we fear it won’t hold on much longer. This classic abandoned location will eventually be a memory, with only images and video to help us remember its beauty.
Will it remain unloved until it finally crumbles?
We return to see what’s changed and document this beautiful 317 year old building for the last time…

It frustrates me that so many magnificent houses like this, are just left to fall into ruin. This one, like many others of it’s type have been stunning places in their day. All the theft and vandalism in these properties angers me. This house deserves saving, but sadly it seems unlikely that this will happen. Your explores are always very informative and interesting, with lots of respect going on. I always look forward to your next one. Thanks again

It’s because around the turn of the century (19th) England enacted a 40% death tax. You can only take 40% out of an estate so many times before it can no longer even support the houses they lived in! 😢

This place breaks my heart 💔😞 Such an iconically gorgeous mansion!!! All of the decorated ceilings, paneled walls, thick doorways, lighting fixtures, staircase & exterior architecture… all sooo very elegant & one of a kind!!! It makes me sooo very sad to see this historical gem, in such disrepair & state of decay 😞 I know that the cost of restoring it would be phenomenal!!! These priceless, ornate, historical buildings will be gone forever, never to return 😞😔 Sad beyond words,,,😔😞 Thank you Sam & Jess for sharing this with us! I truly loved it ❤️❤️❤️

The paintings are incredible! The big one with the horses and men going across with the one that you thought was the knights Templar? Looked more like the Crusaders that were fighting for the church and King. Maybe the family that once lived there had connections in some way. The Kings portrait made me think they were very loyal to the crown and wanted everyone to know it. Maybe the original family. But since it was changed into a hotel…..to impress the guests? I’m sure to stay there it was quite pricey. Just a gorgeous place, someone should bring it back to life!

The presentation of your work should be on TV !! You would deserve a budget from a production company to produce several series !! I wonder why places like this don't allow visitors to look around for a reasonable fee !! That area is well serviced by Travelodge and Premier Inn hotels where you can get the £30 a night rooms !! Any time I go down to Liverpool to visit my brother I would gladly pay £20 to £40 to explore there with the owners permission !! I'm sure if it was marketed as a preservation opportunity loads of people would engage and I'm sure retired tradesmen would volunteer to train volunteers the trades necessary to restore buildings like this if they were going to be put to good use like to help the homeless or people escaping abusive relationships or alcohol or drug rehab in other parts of the country !!

Stunning plaster work 17:17 That could be my new favourite fireplace! 21:40 Love the vending machine! We used to say at one place I worked at that the vending machines should have paracetamol, Resolve, and a whole heap of hangover cures! What an opulent building it's epic and oh how the other half lived, its magnificence at its best. I'm sure those portraits cost a good bit of money plus the furniture and chandeliers. The blue and white resembled the wedge wood pattern. Amazing explore S AND J CHEERS ❤️💙 xxx

Being listed what on earth is the Council doing not to protect the property, listed is supposed to stop this happening, more like it’s the old rule let it get to a state off disrepair and demolish it for houses

Oh! The beauty of those few ceilings in tact! All would have been taken for granted by the owner.. I'm puzzled that you described the beautiful blue decor as Freemasonary patterns. I've never seen vases and swaths of laurels as Freemasonary but only know the 'tools of the architect' as their symbols., as those brown - orange ones which you finally described as masonic. Really loved this amazing explore with all the portraits and a whopping great fire place! Staircase! Amazing!
