Thank you! You have done a wonderful job recreating the aura of this and so many other resorts in their heyday. Ironically for me, having been born in 1946 and coming of age, shall we say, by 1970, I can picture it all, just as it was: the people, their manner and personalities, the clothes (the giant lapels especially), and the culture very much in a 'Playboy' mode -- guys pursuing women; and many women still not that assertive (although others definitely were!) Lots of smoking, lots of drinking, lots of swinging and excess -- but all taken in stride back then. And the settings: shag carpets, mirrors everywhere -- seem so corny now; but oh, back then, everything was so COOL -- and so were we!

(I was born in that town, it's the first mall I've ever been to, and my mom used to work there, so it's crazy to see how that mall is doing now.) I wish they kept that place open and never let it fall into disrepair. It would be awesome to go to a 70's themed place that was totally authentic and a time capsule devoted to that time period. It would have been such a trip to visit that place, in all its cheesy 70's disco splendor.

Dan. thank you. my wife and i went there in 1999 on our 5 year anny. we had such a good time. yea the place was showing its age but it only cost us like $300 for a 5 night stay. We golfed skated and enjoyed the nightclub dance area. The staff was incredible as was the meals. You did not walk away hungry. We stayed in one of the cabins at the tip of the hill. So romantic with a fireplace and a woodsy setting. So sad to see it now but we were able to see thru the graffiti and crap and remembered our amazing time in the Poconos. Oh and those whats happening at penn hills flyer were given out every morning at breakfast. thank you so much for the walk down memory lane. I always find these sad. But what a great 70's vibe and time capsule. Can almost smell the cheap cologne,liquor,cigarette smoke and the smell of dining food. Damn taggers that spray paint and destroy stuff. It's almost as if some of the chairs are just unknowingly waiting for their occupant to return at the bars but never will. I'm only 50 but I can remember the times and what I was doing in the 70's and 80's very clearly and think of what people were doing here at those same moments in time. Your so right, oh to be able to go back in time and visit that connection. Nice video.

I hear ya.. As a young teen my friend convinced me to go up to this old abandoned house with him and bust all of the windows out of it and throw stuff at it. After we were done i just couldn't help but feel horrible when we were standing back admiring our destruction. I later found out that an old man lived across from the house we damaged, and that it was his childhood home that he couldn't manage to tear down because of the memories. I felt so bad i couldn't sleep for days and i vowed that i would never damage anybody's property again no matter what it looked like.. I still feel terrible over 22 years later.

This is sad for me. In 1995, I toured The Summit Resort, Penn Hills, Birchwood Resort, a Caesar's resort nearby and I believe Mt. Airy Lodge. My honeymoon in 1996 was at The Summit Resort cost about $2100 for 7 days, booked by mail a year in advance. Had a heart shaped jacuzzi, a private small pool, round bed, carpeted walls, fireplace, a tv and VCR. Video rentals and snacks at the gift shop. You could get breakfast delivered to the room if you filled out menus the night before. No lunch included, at dinner you would be sat with other different couples every night. There was a lounge with live music or maybe comedy, dark with booths and plenty of alcohol. They had outdoor pools, indoor pools, indoor mini-golf, the ability to do other activities. What we didn't like about Penn Hills was that a highway divided the land so you stayed on one side and all the activities and I think the dining areas were on the other side. I recall an indoor ice skating rink. The room we saw was 3 levels and very 70's. The feel of these rooms was similar to The Summit Resort but just a narrow layout with multi-levels. I have since stayed at Cove Haven in 2008 and it is a similar feel, round beds, indoor jacuzzi, a private small pool, fireplace, tv, music system for cd's at the time, breakfast delivered to the room if you filled out menus the night before, no lunch included, dinner either at your own table or seated with several other couples. Boat ride on the lake, roller skating, indoor ice skating, indoor mini-golf, many other activities depending on season. Professional photos available. Nearby horseback riding too. There is a lounge where you can see mid-level comedians or musicians, always billboards in PA advertising these shows.

This was a nationally known honeymoon resort in the late Sixties and Seventies. I am not sure when (or if) it became known as a "Legendary ... Swingers Resort." My first husband and I spent our honeymoon here, and socialized with a lot of other young couples from all over the Northeastern U.S. It was very nice back then.
@railynnelson
@railynnelson 8 жыл бұрын
+Terry Murphy Many of the honeymoon resorts were/are labeled as swingers resorts automatically. My husband and I are frequent stayers at the Cove Haven family of properties (and we are NOT swingers). That's usually the first thing people ask me about the resorts when I mention them. I always reply "No, we are NOT swingers and why do you think it's OK to ask someone that?". While I'm sure some of that goes on there, you're just as apt to find that at any hotel on any given night. Yes, there are references to sex, and the gift shop sells adult stuff, but that doesn't automatically ensure that it's some den of sordid things. We go there for peace and quiet, and to be pampered, when the biggest decision I have to make on any given day is what seating time I want for breakfast, and if I want to go to one of the social director activities. Staff is amazing, and while things could use an update, I appreciate kitsch, and just enjoy it.
@cnnw3929

I think the true purpose of these resorts, was to build life-long relationships by creating the most positive memories possible. Great memories really do hold families together, and those must start from the very beginning. I'm not so sure if they can be considered as "swingers" resorts, when in reality, they were restricted to couples. Preferably, married ones. Am I correct on this?

For the younger folks these automatic musical instruments used perforated paper rolls to play music. Definitely something you would not likely see in a modern resort. Thanks for the great video Dan.

These videos Dan creates goes beyond making you feel like you are there. He also investigates the history along with the effects of the damage caused by years of abandonment. There's also an overwhelming sense of sadness when you observe the amount of vandalism on the walls. On top of that, you feel worried that something might happen to him and his fellow explorers (weak floors, dangling fixtures, ceilings that look like they are about to cave in, etc.). I'd like to say thanks for being brave and presenting these interesting tidbits of information to the viewers. You definitely earned a subscription from me for your efforts.

My wife and I honeymooned here in October '97 and stayed in one of the detached villas up the hill. It was very rundown already. We really didn't have another option since we'd flown in from NC and made reservations. We wound up spending most of our time off the resort. Sad. The property had/has a lot of potential, if they would've just maintained it and updated it.

This is a great video. Good walkthrough, you hit all the key points of the resort, you provided a backstory to almost everything you filmed, and you added some humor here and there i.e. "I found some condom wrappers on the floor, it appears the love has not stopped at Penn Hills." As you said this video truly pays homage to the resort and the whole Poconos phenomena of the 1960s & 1970s. The commercial voiceover playing in the end credits was the perfect ending. Great job!

There's a phenomenon here in Melbourne, Australia where storefronts are immediately tagged with graffiti when it falls vacant. For some reason, the vandals don't dare do it when there was a business being run from it, even in the dead of night, nobody staying at the place, and no security cameras or lights present. But after the business moves out, within days, the taggers move in.

The music is extremely fitting and eerie and you fucking nail it every single time. Stayed here in early 2008. Thought it was going to be swank from the website but turned out to be an urban explores dream. The place was very dated but the open amenities where in good shape. Stayed in one of the 3 story units with the Heart shaped tub which did work. Most of the complex was shut down by that time. Only the Gift shop, lobby, Dining room, Nightclub and pools were in use. They probably only had a handful of rooms they kept up. The staff was nice and were doing there best. They had activities for guest every day, the highlight being some really bad Karaoke in the Night club on Saturday night! I have a Penn Hills magnet from the gift shop. Such a shame the vandals took over so quick!
