On the island of São Miguel, in the Atlantic Azores Archipelago, near the capital, Ponta Delgada. I explore an abandoned Portuguese gun battery. Equipped with 3 15cm Krupp Coastal Guns connected by and underground bunker system. The guns have been there since WW2 and were abandoned sometime during the 1960s.

Always neat to see how positions are arranged and the thought that went into them. Battlefield archaeologists use this knowledge to find long lost bunkers and such before they are destroyed. Keep history alive!

Interesting content, Portugal controls so many islands in the Atlantic it's hard to keep track of all of them haha. Just as translation fun facts: "Paiol" means "Place to storage explosives", so "Paiolim" means "a small place to stage explosives" and "Cartuchos" means "Ammo magazines"

@@TattooedTraveler I can really speak for the farmers, but noting the joke you made about trespassers, i must add that in portugal (and most places in europe) there is not the practice to shoot at people that trespass on our fields. So and disregarding my first comment, i think that the most probable is that the farmers were curious and wondering who you were and what you were doing there. Or maybe they guessed that you were seeking the guns and were worrying that you might get hurt down there. Or who knows, maybe they were thinking that you might be a possible vandal? 😁 But i would bet that if you came to them and talked about your search, they would probably be happy to show you the way and share some stories (if they had some fluency in english speaking). Most people in europe (portuguese in particular) like to talk about their place and their history. I think that this should be a general feeling in many places all over the world.
