I think the reason people, me included are suspicious of products is because of the exact thing she said about Brazilian blowouts. A chemical formulator somewhere created it knowing formaldehyde is cancer causing. And even though I know to look for formaldehyde, it might be under a different name that I might not know of and say formaldehyde free? 🤨 As a black woman who used relaxers that have this same ingredient for 20+ years, I shudder to think about the damage I’ve caused to my own body. It’s not like the box said “caution this contains a known carcinogen, use at your own risk.” These products are still being sold and used today. I will continue to do my own research and question everyone because history has taught me that it’s more about profits than safety for a lot of these companies. Also I rarely hear formulators address bioaccumulation.

Yes! I keep hearing people say “The dose matters.” Yet they never address that certain ingredients are in so many beauty products that women are slathering on their bodies daily. Surely there is some sort of accumulation over time. I try to avoid as much as possible just in case. I’d rather err on the side of caution and stick to using more natural products and using less of everything in general

LOVE your hair content! So refreshing to see scientific based hair care that makes sense. Very welcomed in the ocean of fear mongering bullshit « clean » stuff we get constantly. I am sooo fed up with the « natural/clean » thing. It’s a real cult thing only based on hair mythology, and making people feel scared and guilty and not helping them with chemistry/science education, with a huge dosage of greenwashing. honestly, the « clean » thing has become pretty unhinged and ridiculous

Ohh I love this! As a trained cosmetic chemist myself I am really glad to see this type of information on the internet. When I started studying and realized that basically 90 % of information which I thought was valid was actual nonsense. As companies tend to just go with the flow and give the costumers what they want based on the bulls*** info they have you still see a lot of sulfate- or silicone-free stuff. Or even moisturizing, which is nonsense. As I also worked in industry (which I do not anymore) I got hate while trying to educate people on the real science, especially by people who blogged a lot about hair care ingredients. People thought that of course I am biased as I am interested in the sales of the company I worked in and thought I spread misinformation. Because... you know, people know better after researching for 2 hours vs. me, who worked in industry as i underwent several years of basic chemistry training before specializing on cosmetic chemisty.... I also sometimes feel the more educated in the field you are, the less actual advice on products you can give, as there is a loooot of possible parameters which affect formulation. I think Anna had the same thoughts on this. A weird effect I noticed is that I went back to using haircare without diving too deep into the ingredients list as now I know that there is too much to consider which you can not see on the ingredients list. I make my decisions based on how my hair feels instead of just focusing on different ingredients. No formula is bad and you really have to figure out depending on your hair.

I would love a follow up video about hair conditioners and what ingredients do. Also, the issue of people using dry shampoo regularly instead of washing their hair. IMO this practice is the equivalent of using a makeup wipe instead of properly washing face. Ok in a pinch but not for daily use.

I have wondered the same. I have added dry shampoo to my routine and it allowed me from going every other day wash to every 3-4 days and my hair is better but is there a down the road drawback. @@sonjaforrester9255 I have felt the same. But in my opinion your hair is right out there in the open, collecting and absorbing everything you come into contact with. I liked this video a lot! It's a bit frustrating for people who are into haircare to hear that whether a product is good or bad for them comes down to unique user experience, because we all want clear easy rules we can follow, but the reality is that it's too complex to make large general recommendations like "no sulfates". The only thing I didn't like is the chemist seemed to be advocating a lot for just believing in the claims on the bottle because "in a world where everyone is ethical" but unfortunately, I don't feel like we live in that world. I believe the formulation chemists are ethical, but I don't necessarily believe all the marketing is transparent. For example: A product may be formulated to be a leave in conditioner but also contains an ingredient that is only mildly effective for heat protection in a low concentration. On the label, that nuance is lost though and just becomes "a leave in conditioner AND heat protectant!". That said, I guess that's why it comes down to user experience in the end. Unless every product comes with a detailed explanation of the intended goals when formulated, the consumer will never know until they try it.
@karinvancaspel
@karinvancaspel Жыл бұрын
True! I’ve seen “heat protectant” on a lot of leave-ins, but I doubt they’re as good as my “can resist up to 450 degrees” heat protectants! And I’ve had hair oils which my hair soaked up, but also oils that really coat the hair smoothly OR even making it more rough. It’s something I now know by experiencing it, but it would be nice to know these things before buying them😅

I’m with you 😊. I started seeing a Dermatologist and Biotin vitamins were recommended for hair loss. It doesn’t work for everyone but it worked for me. My hair stopped falling out. However the aging process with menopause will cause hair loss. A hormone replacement therapy may be needed for women over 50 to help with hair loss and other health issues. Not washing your hair and having a dirty scalp is asking for a major problem like fungal infection causing hair loss. Fungal infections are hard to treat. My Dermatologist has seen many patients with hair loss due to fungal infections from not washing hair often enough or as needed. It’s a fad now to not wash your hair as necessary. Healthy scalp healthy hair. Anyhow I’ve learned a lot. My hair is no longer falling out. Peace. ❤❤❤🌸🌸🌸

Hi! Thanks for the video and the expertise. I am tempted to add mine, if I may, as a pharmacist. I think in theory there can be ingredients in shampoos that can promote hairgrowth! Although I think it is debated if the small time that the shampoo is in contact with the scalp can make a difference. I am thinking of products similar then minoxidil (and i think even rosmary), i.e. products that stimulate the blood vessels in the scalp. The reasoning is that if there goes more blood to the follicles, it grows faster. Minoxidil is scientifically proven (it was a side effect of another purpose it was used for). Anyway, but i wouldn't apply it via shampoo but more as a serum to have a better take up. Keep up the good work girls!

I wish this worked 😫 I have tried just about everything & she’ll do it for about 5 minutes and then come back to just wanting to play with me! I now have her in daycare a few times a week which has been amazing for her to get even more play time 🩷

Great interview, common sense! Backed by chemist’s knowledge.. alternate non sulfate with gentle cleaners shampoos, not necessarily $$$ .. good stuff at drugstore and old school salon products likel Paul Mitchell nexus etc social media isn’t all true.. beauty industry isn’t regulated so they can claim all kinds of stuff..use what makes your hair feel good TO YOU.. wash hair enough to keep scalp clean 😊

Awesome video! I do have a random question that might be very ignorant. Do guys (or girls) with very short hair use conditioner to counteract that charge?

I disagree with the parabens conversation. I didn't pay attention to this sensitive ingredient until I found at 27 years old, I developed an allergy to them. My skin was wrecked, and had to work with a derm to fix it. I learned that excess use of sensitive ingredients over a long time can often develop allergies to it. That it's fairly common for this to happen. I recommend younger people to continue to be wary to reduce their chances of developing allergies to generalized sensitive ingredients. Itchy skin allergies are no fun, esp when it's unexpected :/

This was such a great video. I have only been following for about a month and im binging all the information. My fave part is the dose makes the poison and the remedy. Brilliant. I use all affordable drugstore products. My hair is doing great i think. I just stick with what works for me rather than worrying about prices. I just started a channel to promote hair health and appreciation and just taking the time to listen to our hair needs. 😊❤😊❤

I knew ingredients in Shampoos were safe, I use Old spice shampoo, has Sulfates and Silicones. Been using those for a long time, hair looks great, no build up. Just can't listen to those people demonizing certain ingredients! Very informative video here😉

As a curly hair black woman, I see so many vdeos of KZfaqrs slathering so much product on their hair. I haven't been doing that because where I live haircare products are costly. But with my hair type it's been working for me to not slather so much product.

Definitely agree on cycling shampoo though. I use different shampoos during different times of the week depending on how my scalp feels. If my scalp is flaring due to my eczema, I will use my shampoo for eczema. If it feels slightly irritated, my redken Zinc shampoo. Ill clarify if it feels like I have some buildup. But not often because itll irritate my dry scalp. Ill use my "detox shampoo" when my scalp feels fine. Whereas my "moisture" shampoo ill use when it's slightly dry. It depends on my scalp climate 😂

Id be curious about how does protein affect the hair? I see people talk about protein overload. But we need to know whats right. Lol. Basically protein overload vs moisture. And moisture overload too 😂

Are proteins something to avoid for fine/thin hair? Rumor is that proteins are bad for “low porosity” or finer hair types and can cause ends to become dry/break off. Would love to know your thoughts on this!!🩷

Lots of "it depends." What are examples of mild surfactants vs stronger ones (so we know what to look for on labels)? Same question with silicones. Also, it seems this information is mostly applied to straight hair. For example, curly/wavy hair won't be able to curl as easily if heavy silicones are coating hair (bc water can't get in - which is needed for curl). Lastly, it's important to consider the environment with the products we use. Parabens have shown potential to bioaccumulate. I prefer to avoid so as not to contribute to the problem. There are SO many good products without them.

Can a detangling/conditioning spray act as a conditioner or do you also need an in shower conditioner? Sometimes I just dont feel like taking the extra min in the shower for conditioner and do the spray one after.

19:29 I'm pretty sure the biggest cause of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia which you cannot help with any shampoo, except maybe Nizoral to some degree because it has some anti-androgen properties.
